Topic: Jcm 800 with vintage modern...

Hey all-
How do you think a Marshall vintage modern would pair up with a jcm 800? I was thinking vintage side for rock/blues and the modern side for heavier hard rock stuff. Thoughts?

Ps I just got a 1984 jcm 800 from charleys guitar shop on eBay. Hopefully it gets here soon!

Thoughts? Sounds like an awesome combination to me! Did you get a 2203 or 2204?

I got the 2204. 50 watts is more than enough for jamming in my basement hana

I think the pair will do you well!  I assume you already own a Vintage Modern?  If so, you know they can get a little buzz-saw'ish because of the kt66's, so keeping it more on the mild end and using the Jcm 800 for your thicker tone should work just fine.  I used to keep mine unboosted, clean and run my DSL thick and dirty.  Kind of like how a Pork Loin pedals works..  I'd like to hear how it turns out, youtube video or something if you have the means. -S.

The Vintage Modern comes later this month... ill def see what i can do about a video though when everything is set and i find some good settings!

those 2204's are lovely sounding amps. my mate had a mint condition 2204 that just turned my tele into a great crunchy riff machine and cranking it up with a TS made it sing. i wish i'd had the dollar at the time he sold it.

or maybe just running dual jcm 800's... like he does on his on the fly gigs, two of those seem to cover all of his tones for the most part.

2 different heads will give you more versatility.  You can set each JCM 800 up differently, but they are still the SAME head.  Me personally, I'd rather have 2 different amps, that sound different.  Thats the point of blending different tones.  Using 2 amps can and will turn into a pain after a while and if you get sick of it, you're stuck with 2 of the same amps also.  You may in the long run end up having both amps sounding alike whether you realize it or not.  Using 2 different heads with different tonal characteristics Forces you to be more creative, and in turn gives you a more unique sound.

If you're undecided, maybe wait and see how you like the JCM 800 when you get it.  Use your ears, they're never wrong, and listen if there is anything missing in the overall tone.  If so, then decide on another amp to fill in the gaps.  -Seth
