Topic: Return to Radio

It has been a long time soldier of the Bonamassa army.  A long strange time.

But, I come with this.  I am returning to the radio, Oct 8, from 9 to midnight.

I will be playing two full albums.  The entire new, unreleased Scott Holt record KUDZU.

And Joes entire new record.

That leaves about 60 more minutes.  So, if you know my email, email me your requests.

If not, get its from Moods or maybe Patty has it too.

Oct 8.  Blues Friday.

www.wxpr.org

and I am going to stream it live as well, so you can see my ugly mug.

Re: Return to Radio

Nice, Dino.  Those times are Central Daylight Time, I presume.  See you (literally) then!  Well I'll try as I work very late.  Except I am sure I will not be able to see you with iPAd due to Flash restrictions???  And, uh, WHICH new Joe Bonamassa recording will that be that you are referring to?

Re: Return to Radio

Yeah, I am in Wisconsin.

I am not sure which record.  Sadly, I am not sold on Black Country yet.  But, only listened to it one.

I LOVE John Henry.  LOVE IT!

So, it might be John Henry.

We have till next week.

Re: Return to Radio

Okay, it looks like Moods is going to help me out.  I listened to BCC and sort of decided against it for a show called Blues Friday.

So, the plan is a Joe collection, a Holt collection, and a Buddy Guy collection.

With some EC Scott stuff for my mom.

Re: Return to Radio

Dino will be on air in a bit. Scott Holt's new record then a rarities and fan favorites set of Joe to follow.  www.wxpr.org

This has been awesome !!

Listened to it with the husband tonight while he finished up some work.

I passed the link on to my next door neighbors.  They had never heard of Joe.   So you KNOW I had to tell them about Joe, and the concerts coming up!  Hoping they decide to attend Joe's show in Jacksonville with us!!

Thanks Dino!!

Re: Return to Radio

Thank you all.  I had a lot of fun.

Except for the repeated calls from the blues police.

But, I got Stu Craig to hear some Scott Holt, and I played TBOJH three times.

So it was totally worth it.

I want to know also...Who, what, when, where, number those repeated calls and were they directed at Joe and Scott Holt both or.......or did Dino make it all up?   Or did Dr. Jones have the studio lines on 911 speed dial???   :D

Re: Return to Radio

I can't remember exactly when the guy called but Dino was playing a lot of Joe and Jack White, Scott Holt and some guy called and said that he wasn't playing traditional blues or something like that. So Dino put on some Mississippi Delta blues circa 1920's and the guy calls back and Dino asked him what he meant by traditional blues and so he mentioned some Chess era artists.

Typical purist blues argument what era of the blues to you call traditional?

Re: Return to Radio

Like Moods said, I was playing a ton of Joe and Scott and Buddy.  I did not bring out any fat possum or black keys, and I opened with The Dead Weather, since I just got the record.

Moods got to watch all this happen live, so he can verify that I did not make it up.  But thanks for that.

Oh, and I played Alvun Youngblood Hart.

Anyway, some guy called and said, "Was there a change in format?"

I said no, what do you mean?

He said that he thought this was a blues show, and why dont I play some blues

I replied that I think I am playing the blues, that I am pretty sure I am playing blues music.

He said to play something traditional.

So, I got pissed off.  I hate the blues police.  Even if I was once a member.  I hate em.

So, I put on something from Joe Callicott, recorded in 1947.  Just him and an acoustic guitar, singing a song.  Pure, uncut from the source, blues.

Moron called back.  Proceeded to tell me that people were turning the station, and that I was a dick, and the whole bit.

I said that he was free to come down and do his own radio station, but this is my time and I know the blues, and this is what we are doing.

Then I asked what he thought was traditional.  He said Eric Clapton, something like that.  Maybe some Chess records.  And I asked, you mean like the movie, and he said yeah like the movie.

So, I hung up on him and pulled out some Buddy Guy instrumentals from the Chess years, and played 2 of them.  And made fun of him on the air.

I was a member of the blues police.  And I hate myself for it.  Now, I really question EVERYTHING about the blues community, because of the police.

We must fight against these narrow definers of the music we love.

We must fight against them.  They shall never own our musicians, and our venues.

I love traditionalists, but we must move forward.

Re: Return to Radio

Ha Ha, I Love it!! Not quite as good as listening / seeing it, but reading it suffices.  I love it.  Incidentally I knew you didn't make it up, I just knew I'd get the info I was after by questioning broadly!  big_smile

Re: Return to Radio

Naw it wadn't me.  "Traditional" blues is more style than era and it subdivides quite handily.  At the risk of repeating myself, HOW you play a tune is often more important than when (era?) or maybe even what tune you play.

Stones took a blues tune "Love in Vain" and made it country rock.  It's not even the same chord structure.  Not bad or good, by that fact alone, but 'nuff said.

Sounds to me like you did fine, Dino.  One must know the law before one is qualified to enforce it.  Bump 'em.

Maybe alcohol & wankerism were involved.  tongue

Re: Return to Radio

I was listening with the lovely Helen and we were rolling as the deal went down. It was a classic setup when Dino made the comment and then cued up the real deal roots play. Loved it Dino. Hang on in there, we have a show out here that is much the same (run by the police). I won free tickets to the JB 20th anniversary gig and the dude didn't know who he was or have a tune available to play, just that the producer had these tickets to give away. tongue  This is the longest running blues show west of the Mississippi! He was playing some good Buddy Guy though...
