I'll post this here since a lot of you don't cruise the other topics.

We've talked about this before, but I'm still floored at how different you sound on this album. Your guitar tone is quite unlike anything you've gotten in the past - it's super heavy.

"Yeah, it's amazing what a couple of Marshalls, two Starbucks and two Red Bulls will do to you. [laughs] It was a lot of fun to get some different sounds going. I had a different kind of rig than I usually use. I had a Marshall Jubilee and Super Bass, a Tube Screamer, a wah, delay and a flanger, and that was it. For guitars, I got to use a '68 Custom Les Paul that belonged to Mel Galley - he was in Trapeze with Glenn. I was pretty careful when playing that guitar. Then I used a few of my signature Les Pauls, plus an Explorer. I didn't go crazy with gear and guitars - there was no time.

Re: Joe's Gear on BCC

I've noticed the mix makes a fair bit of difference.

Tones on S.O.Y are excellent!

Re: Joe's Gear on BCC

Ok so Monday I break down and pop into Future Shop and pick up BCC. I say "break down" because I already bought it on iTunes but my wife always has the iPod and I wanted the booklet, lyrics, etc.

I have been blasting it in my car non-stop. I am going to say here that not only is BCC an epic rock album, but Joe's playing and tone has set a new benchmark. On the way to rehearsal Wed night my bass player couldn't believe Joe's playing either.

While I have  been a fan of Joe's since I first heard him 2 years ago, BCC changes everything. I am sure I am preaching to the choir here but I can't help it - BCC has established (IMO) Joe as the best freakin' guitar player alive today. Period.

Sure there are the Guthrie Govans of the world out there who are technically brilliant but there is something in Joe's touch and phrasing and  TONE that seperates him from the rest. I know it's not a competition and I hate it when people say "this guy is better than that guy..." but I can't help it. This album is beyond anything I thought was possible on the guitar - his blinding speed picking is so CLEAN - I can't hear any legato (my cheat for speed). And I thought EJ was the king of fast picked pentatonics!

Now that I have that out of the way - whew - I DO have a gear question:

Looking at the pics of Joe's pedalboard I am curious as to the chain - it appears that he has the Micro Flanger and Phase 45 running into the front end after the fuzz, pork loin, wah, etc? What is in the loop? There are no loops on the old Marshall's so I am just curious if the DD3 and Aquapuss are in the loop on the JCM's in that photo and the Jub in the studio?

I just picked up a script Phase 90 and wasn't sure if I should run it in the loop or front end....

thanks

Re: Joe's Gear on BCC

You should run the phaser wherever you want and sounds best to you.  I for one NEVER use loops for anything.  Too new school for me.  However I like modulation (chorus, flange, phase) up front, and if you must, delay and reverb in the loop.  others may disagree.  really a subjective thing.

Re: Joe's Gear on BCC

Hi!
I can't remember where I read it but Joe said that he used a Xotic X-Blender effects loop on BCC. He says it's the best way to have an effects loop when your amps don't (just like the Superbass or Superlead he used on BCC)... I'm looking into one at the moment to complement my Metro 50W plexi and it looks like an awesome piece of gear since you can blend the wet/dry signal to taste as well, it's not just full ON or full OFF... It's particularly interesting for fellas like me who like just a subtle touch of delay/reverb wink

kevman I totally agree with you on BCC. It's an awesome album. The only letdown for me is Glenn Hugues' s voice, although I'm kinda getting used to it. I hate when he launches into high-pitched screams, it's horrible to my ears. Musically speaking however it's just brilliant. Hugues is brilliant on the bass, Derek is brilliant on the keyboards, Jason on the drums and Joe is brilliant on the guitar and vocals!

Cheers!
