Topic: Layla Zoe

Although I more or less knew what to expect (or what I hoped for) from Michael Burks, I was still surprised by the power of the man's performance.

Although I had heard the name Dana Fuchs somewhere before, I didn't really know what to expect, though my interest was naturally sharpened once I heard that Joe would be doing a number with her. No one was disappointed and I suspect that most of us seeing her for the first time were very happily surprised.

For me personally, these surprises were maybe even surpassed by seeing and hearing Layla Zoe, a tattooed lady (with a brilliant Zappa tattoo on the inside of her right leg) from Canada who is even closer to Janis than Dana Fuchs.

Layla blew me away big time with her knock-out voice, stunning looks, long hair (who does that remind me of? wink ) and nice personality. She can also hold her beer!

Layla was 'discovered' by Jeff Healy. There are music samples and lots of info on her website here - http://www.layla.ca/ She is an independent artist and finances the production of her own cd's, which means she relies on direct public support. I think she sold more cd's at the festival than any other artist because she knocked everybody spark out with the range and emotion in her voice. She did brilliant versions of the following, as well as her own songs -

Hound dog (never heard this live before)

The thrill is gone

Stand by me !!! - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcAcXyCGz7g

I'd rather go blind (can't decide if I preferred Dana's version or hers)

No woman no cry

Hoochie coochie woman - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A--mA6Sa5fA

These youtube clips are a few years old - what I saw was much better, even more powerful. Please check her out, I think she deserves support!

Re: Layla Zoe

Saw Layla Zoe this year again. That lady is mindblowing.

It was on the occasion of a nice little summer jam in Bergkamen.
Layla was on stage with the Bluesnight Band:

And that's the great jam finale with:

Re: Layla Zoe

Well even a blind squirrel finds the acorn once in awhile.  Blues Sissi has promoted this gal in another forum and I can't believe it's taken me this long to really listen to her.  Like George sez - this woman's got a voice that most would kill for and she's red hot (pun intended).  I saw her video of "Hoochie Coochie Woman" and my jaw slammed to the floor.  Tried to get this song and found out it's an import for $60.  I'll probably get both albums available to me this week.  More of you should check her out - waay better than alot of the women promoted here.

Re: Layla Zoe

only found Layla Zoe in the last few weeks. what an awesome vocalist sadly all I hear is the usual names like Janis Joplin, Koko Taylor and Beth Hart. which to me isn't a bad thing due to the amazing female vocalist named above. each are of totally awesome musicians themselves and there music is within my own collection as is Layla. the youtube.com vids show an electric live performer who`s love of soul/blues shows through her like its running through her veins which isn't to far from the truthful statement through her shows. even the blues caravan shows with Ina Forsman & Tasha Taylor, the three females sounds uplifting, spiritual, soulful and bluesy. there is one vid on youtube.com which is outstanding the cover of " Chain Of Fools " breath taking...

Re: Layla Zoe

I am a fan too.
More Bluesy/rock than the latest Beth Hart but with the same intensity.
Her last couple albums with Henrik Freischlader are awesome.Henrik is the perfect guitarist for her music

Re: Layla Zoe

The new album with music from her guitarist Jan Laacks is awesome. Maybe the best album she made.
