Topic: Marshall DSL vs. Marshall Jubilee

This has probably been covered before but I could not find a direct reference to it.  For you fellows who have experience with both amps, what are the major differences.  Is there a big difference in any aspects such as feel, gain, smoothness. effects loop, or any other important qualities.  Thanks!

Re: Marshall DSL vs. Marshall Jubilee

Have tried the DSL2000 I can say it's more chunky and heavy metal if you wanted it to. It also has a really nice clean. Whereas the Jub has a good rock/hard rock tone when driven fully, and the clean seemed to have some gain to me when at 10 on my guitar's volume... so you back it back to 7 or 8 and you're good.

The DSL was a little to modern sounding for me... while the jub has more classic in it. IMHO  big_smile
For the record, I did like both amps and was could have made the DSL work for my needs no problem.

Re: Marshall DSL vs. Marshall Jubilee

I own a Jub and I have a friend that owns both a DSL and a TSL.

The Jub has a very Fat Beefy tone that is hard to find in other amps, Its like a Mack Truck plowing through a brick wall and when you play other amps your really miss what it can do. But its not the end all be all amp forsure, the DSL is much more versital. The Clean on the Jub gets dirty when driven hard, sounds great with a Strat. THe DSL seems to stay clean has a more modern sound and more Crunch and gain on tap. I would say the DSL is more versital and if I was in say a cover band or top 40 band that is the amp I would have, the DSL can also do metal and everything in between and I think the Jub excels at Blues to Hard Rock.

The down fall to both amps is the Shared EQ, though the volume controls on the DSL let you dial in your clean much better than on the Jub and make it more of a true two channel amp. THe Jub is more like a one channel amp and it can be a real pain trying to adjust the volumes on both.

I have come close to selling my Jub for a DSL or TSL but like I said there is just something there that you miss when you play another amp.

Now the TSL is another story, I have heard some sound great and some like total **** aka my friends sounds like a bag of bees but his setting are riduclous. I actually call it "The Angry Beaver Tone" HA

Re: Marshall DSL vs. Marshall Jubilee

...can I say reliability - I'd take a Jub on the road over a DSL.

Both can achieve some very nice tones...I think the Jub has more bollocks...something you know is just right as soon as you play the amp.

Hunt some of the 800s out there...some are scarily close to the Jub's tones.

I'm sure there's a fair number of forum members who'd have it off you before you could say Jack Robinson.

Re: Marshall DSL vs. Marshall Jubilee

I am sure, but I will never sell it, I think just loose my mind everyonce in awhile and now that I have my classic 30 I just go to that when I want to change it up a bit.

Is that a Peavey Classic 30 tweed?
There's lots of mods you can do to those too.

My first half-stack was a Peavey Classic 100 tweed head through a 5150 4x12 cabinet. I liked it a lot! It took eight
EL-84 tubes though, and they'd crack easy when you changed them because they sit horizontally not vertically.

Re: Marshall DSL vs. Marshall Jubilee

Yep its a Tweed Classic 30 the older version without the Peavey logo. Everyone thinks its a fender I just smile and say no its a Peavey. I like taking it to smaller gigs and its more versital that the Jub because I can acctually use the clean channel. Mine has a few mods already the guy before me retubed it with JJ's and put a vintage 30 in it. He also wired it up so I can run the amp to a different cab or Run the Jub into peavey cab which has come in handy. For $300 its a great little amp. I was only going to use it for Practice and Jams but it sounds so good I have used it live a handfull of times. I think it kinda sounds like a Vox/Marshall mix.

I've heard Joe praise these amps as a good budget value for the tone you get. I'd have to agree. I'd probably take one of those over my Blues Junior... and I have my BJR modded.

Re: Marshall DSL vs. Marshall Jubilee

The Carvin Belair 2x12 is another great economy combo amp.

Re: Marshall DSL vs. Marshall Jubilee

The Carvin Belair is a great 2x12 amp very voxy sounding nice clean. The singer in my band uses one, have to watch the highend a bit but a great sounding amp for the money.

Re: Marshall DSL vs. Marshall Jubilee

What are the differences in the jcm 800s? I want a 50w head, I know there is the 2204 and the mkII super lead series. Is there a major difference?

Thanks,

Nic:  Did you do the BillM mods on the BJr yourself?  How challenging were they if you're not used to using a soldering gun?  I've been curious about them since I first read about them and heard a pretty amazing-sounding one at a jam a few months ago....my Blues Jr. is dead stock and sounds...ummm....un-inspiring.

I had my brother do it for me since he just finished a Metro JTM45 clone.
The part that stinks most about the BillM mods is the removal of the old parts. You have to use a solder-sucker, and some of the components have 4 solder points... so you have to get them all at once.

I would say the tech. savy-ness of skill needed is slightly more difficult than novice. Some of them are really easy though. A main thing is you don't want to use a soldering iron that has too many watts or you'll burn and ruin the board. His site has GREAT information on doing all of them as long as you're willing to dig. It DID to a lot to my blues jr. Although now it's really bassy, I can get the bass past 3. But it also has a lot more treble and mids too, so it's still not a "dark" amp. I used to have a Swamp Thang speaker in it, but just swapped it out for a governor speaker. And, of course, Weber beam blockers.

Nic:  Thanks for the response....I think I'll leave it to an expert when I finally get around to doing it...just sent my newly purchased gently used USA HRDlx out to Jim Price at Omega Amps for an upgrade which will put a lil' dent in my cashflow, maybe for Xmas :-)

P.S.  You know we'd all love some YouTube clips of your bro's Metro :-)
