Topic: Dave Osti -Gentlemans Blues Club

Back in 2007 I see Stu Craig started a GBC thread and mentioned Dave Osti as being one of the 'resident' guitarists in the combo.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned Dave since, I tried to seek out a thread but couldn't find one. Anyway, courtesy of LastFM I heard 'Lips of a Liar' by Dave from his album 'VooDoo Guitar'.

After a quick amazon download I have the aforesaid album and my oh my does Dirty Dave kick up a storm. Yet again another guitar 'Meister' I never heard of before. Great voice and great chops. It's guitar hero soaked blues but a real shot in the arm straight out of the box.

Sorry if I'm posting something you all already know, but I just I had to go into print about this guy.

Nice thing abut it was I gave him a 'shout' through LastFM personally and he took the trouble to immediately reply. If I can help get him over here I certainly will and told him so. I've got some time on my hands coming up so I would definately bus this guy around Europe!

Re: Dave Osti -Gentlemans Blues Club

Mike,

I got about half the songs off Voodoo Guitar and after a few listens got tired of it.  Like the last GBC cd, VG sounds like he's just going through the motions.  His all acoustic Into the West album however is the one to get.  The lyrics to those songs is like poetry.  Some of them were redone on early GBC.  I strongly urge you to check out that album.  "YOUCANTSAYTHATHERE", "The Thorn", "Brother Ray", "Walkin' Dead" (probably the best anti-drug I've ever heard) and "If You Will" to name a few.

Re: Dave Osti -Gentlemans Blues Club

I don't know where the "YOUCAN'TSAYTHATHERE" cause it's not in my post.  Anybody else having this problem today?

Re: Dave Osti -Gentlemans Blues Club

Hi Curby,

thanks for the tip. I mean, I guess I know what you mean, about going thru the motions.

I thought maybe there was almost a little too much shred to be blues, but I found there was enough melody to be impressed by it.

Some of it is mood I guess. He riffs well, and I am a sucker for that if its used effectively, which I found he does most of the time. There are enough gems on there (VooDoo Guitar) to maintain my interest. 'Lips of a Liar' has that moody Robin Trower change of pace towards the end. 'Rusty Rose' is a fave, although I can't explain why and the title track with sultry slide was some icing on the cake.

But I like the sound of the acoustic album and with his undoubted ability I should think he does that very well. I shall check it out.

BTY, good your still here giving that vital feedback on new music. Don't be a stranger................

The 'YCSTH' thing I haven't had a problem with.........as yet!

Re: Dave Osti -Gentlemans Blues Club

Hey there Curby.  totally with you on Osti.  I heard his album and it was ok, might have blown me away if I was new to the genre, but I found voodoo guitar to be a very mediocre album.  I listened to it amidst a sea of other big time guitar albums though.  But then I am always listening to that style of music and the good ones stick out.  Though I could tell he had a lot of talent I was not impressed by the album.  Will DEFINITELY look into his acoustic album though.  I'm always anxious to see what big time electric players can do with the acoustic.

Dirty D,

Are you by chance Mr. Dirty Dave Osti?  If so this forum's honored by your presence.  If not then welcome here anyway.  I'm a big fan of GBC and love the acoustic In the West.

Howdy: Yeah its me, Ive been frying my brain trying to work on some new stuff, kinda struggling through a new computer rig, keeps crashing while trying to record, hahahaha
I love JB, back in the day at the Aztec hotel i just happened to take the night off when he came and sat in with Philip, at least theres a video of it, we all had some great jams down there, but missed my chance to meet Joe that night, and I lived across the street!...jeeze.
Philip is an Amazing person and Artist, we met at the Aztec both playing beat up white strats and each with a Super reverb amp, then we jammed...been friends since...thanks for diggin in the west, I just sat on the floor and wrote a bunch of tunes while getting evicted from an apartment, sometimes you just gotta play a simple song words and melody...thats the one i play for elderly relatives, hahahahaha
take care...

Re: Dave Osti -Gentlemans Blues Club

Dave,

so glad you took the time to join up and make a comment on here.

I gotta tell ya I stand by my original comments on the album. I listened to it sooo many times on the mp3 that I know the dang thing by heart.

Think what brings me back to it all the time all the underlying riffs and I tend to hear the songs without some of the guitar fills and runs and it works for me. I still love 'Rusty Rose' and I am working with a couple of mates to cover it.

Keep doing what you do. I'm interested in the output!

By the way, I'm currently planning a 'Blues Event' here in Germany in September or very early October. 1 day bands and 'sit in's affair. So, if you have to get out of Dodge, or evade the IRS for a few days then look East. Yeah OK, Germany in the fall can be chilly but the music is HOT!

Thanks for joining up man.

Wow!  I didn't know if it you or not, but I'm right with Mike  in welcoming you here.  Last night I scrolled up to my earlier post and cringed.  I was a bit critical commenting on Voodoo Guitar only because I was hoping it would be more like In the West.  I long ago changed my opinion after further listens.
That was a neat story about Phil Sayce and Joe.  Sayce is well known here and has developed almost a cult following.  I'd be real curious how GBC got along with all the talented band members and has there been talk of a new album.
Thanks Dave for dropping in and please don't be a stranger.

Thanx Curby, Please don't cringe about stuff , your review was correct especially in the grand scheme of this music biz,  no worries I prefer honest first impressions because they are real, I recorded that for the label and to make a long story short they kept calling and saying"More Shred"  so thats why theres grinding guitars everywhere...hahaha "I personally like the pretty notes" but they don't sell    "Yet"  i just worked up a song last week that I like and ill email it to you if you want, its still in raw form but i dig it, song title (Trouble) cool lyrics and more melodic guitar solo, its also a free download on last fm.  look in albums and "Trouble Single" you should find it, if not ill send it...    take care.

Re: Dave Osti -Gentlemans Blues Club

Dirty Dave,

I found "Trouble" on iTunes a snapped it up.  Very, very soulful!  That's the kind of music I love and the guitar playing is exquisite.  I live in the heartland, but that's music that harkens Otis Redding and warm sea breezes.  I think that's your best song and hope others here check it out.  Thanks.

Re: Dave Osti -Gentlemans Blues Club

Hi Dave,

checked out Last.FM and took the download of 'Trouble'.

Thats a beautifully laid back number. Pretty soulful too. There was some phrasing at one point where I just thought it had that 'Sitting on the dock of the bay' feel to it. I can just imagine that being played live, bringing the vibe down and trailing away....

Definately worth working up. Keep it coming. I didn't get 'In the West' yet although Curby pointed me to it, so it 's on the list. Gotta get some 'CashintheTash' first. Joe's regular output (amogst others) keeps me poor.

Thanks for the heads up on 'Trouble' Dave. Hope you keep looking in here, you got fans across the pond y'know?
