Topic: "The Voice" Paul Rodgers

I am having the distinct pleasure of seeing my Number One music man "The Voice", Paul Rodgers, this week.

He will be performing with Bad Co. so I get to see some Mick Ralphs and Simon Kirke too smile
No matter how much I see him or them, I always get excited to have the honor of seeing one of the greatest vocalist that has ever existed.  It's one thing to hear him on record or on tape, but to see him singing live, is one of the greatest things ever. He looks better than ever  We are so lucky that he takes such great care of himself and his voice.

Here is what others have said about this legend in April of 2010:

The Who’s Pete Townshend is one of many musical icons who sing the praises of Paul Rodgers.
A number of rock ’n’ roll greats worship Paul Rodgers and his incredible voice. What do some of the biggest names in the business have to say?
“Paul Rodgers has been, and still is, by far, one of the finest talents of our musical genre”
— Jimmy Page
“Paul was a hero to Freddie and us when we were starting out. When I first worked with him, I was in awe of him.”
— Queen’s Brian May
“I am a huge fan. His voice is probably the greatest rock-blues voice we have here in the U.K. I remember when we first played on a show with Free, The Small Faces were on the bill. Steve Marriott and I stood stunned at the authority of Paul’s sound, style, and control. They were the tightest, simplest and straightest band alive in their time. Every one of them was a master of simplicity and dignity — a word you can rarely use in our game.”
— The Who’s
Pete Townshend
“Even though we’ve both been in the same business for 40 years each, I don’t think we’ve ever actually met, but I’ve always admired Paul Rodgers voice and his albums with Free, The Firm and Bad Company. Long live Paul Rodgers!”
— Ozzy Osbourne
“Paul Rodgers is the best singer in rock and roll; no one else comes close. His range, his tone, his phrasing; it doesn’t get better than him. Paul is my favorite rock-and-roll singer. I think he is perfect for Queen, and Freddy Mercury was a hard act to follow.”
— Ritchie Blackmore
“From the band “Free” in the ’60s, to the more recent years as the lead singer of Queen, I have always liked Paul Rodgers’ voice a lot. He is truly an inspiration and it’s great to see him rocking the world. Happy 40th anniversary, Paul.”
— Scorpions vocalist
Klaus Meine

Edit to say:  What I love about this article too, is many of the musicians are from Europe, and they mentioned his band "Free".  "Free" is not well known in the U.S.  Such a shame.

Re: "The Voice" Paul Rodgers

Here's some tasty treats that reflect the awe-inspiring career Paul Rodgers has had and some of the great songs he has written and excellent musicians he has played with:

I have to start with this.  It's a must.  One of the greatest live bands ever!  The first time I ever heard of him and them and it changed my musical world.

A comment about this song from Lowerider:  aint no evil in this bass solo, he solos while the song continues with Koss's strong guitar and killer tone, F N brilliant! you cant match this, kirke is a rock solid drummer who didnt solo much but he knew when and how to bring it on. Find another song as well done and blended with a bass solo as this, virtually impossible.

Hi River Cat,

enjoy the show. We might not have always agreed about what PR should do but we both agree he should keep on doing it!

I haven't seen him on the latest tour. There were a couple of negatives printed about the length of some of the gigs but overall most said it was a good show. Have a great time. He is a living legend and a credit to his art.

Also thanks for some of those links. I hadn't seen a couple of those before. "Be my Friend" is an absolute stunner. Wonderful stuff.

Yeah Vortex,

That is another great song by Paul.   That was off his Muddy Water Blue's tour.  Neil Schon of Journey was part of his band during that tour and i was there that night.  I followed him all over Norther California.  That tour was off the hook.  Slash, Brian Setzer were also there that night.  It was legendary.

If you like that song, please make sure you get Paul Rodger's album "Muddy Water Blues."
That is where that particular song is from.  That is a phenomenal album with a guest guitarist on every song.  His voice is absolutely smooth as you can get on "Standin' Around Cryin" featuring David Gilmore.  That song was made for him.

Oh how I wish he would do another album like that.

"Be my Friend" takes me to another world and shows how really deep Free goes.  It is an absolute stunner.  Sometimes that song leaves me breathless.  The wide range that Free went as a band and could go with the same outstanding quality, the depth of the quality is why they are my favorites.  They are musician's musicians.

Can you please elaborate on PR?  I am interested in what you wanted him to do as I am not sure what it was.

PR =  Purrrrrrrrrrr-fect Pitch Paul

Thank Hansamike

Re: "The Voice" Paul Rodgers

Ah, the PR thing was me mumping on about a Free reformation with Joe as an ideal candidate for the guitar slot. How the other 2 guys were up for it but Paul appeared to be the one not interested. Water under the bridge, so to speak. It's no longer a topic with me.

As to Free the band, people some times forget just how young they were. At the time of 'Tons of Sobs' they were all pretty much still teenagers! To have created those first 3 albums at such a tender age was an incredible feat, especially as they were invariablyknocked out in under a couple months. 'ToS' took just a week!

I have no pretensions whatsoever that I could approach within a country mile PR's vocal mastery (who the hell could?), nevertheless I like these great songs to be played (and heard) which was why with a new project I proposed 3 songs from Fire and Water to cover which sometimes are always overlooked. The guys were knocked out as they were not at all familiar with the album (too young!). 'Heavy Load' and my fave 'Oh I wept' sounded great but maybe 'Don't Say You Love Me' won't really work as well live. Still fun to try though.

40 years + and Free still sound as fresh and as relevant today as they were then.

Re: "The Voice" Paul Rodgers

Enjoy Bad Co., River Cat. I saw them in April - it was great to see PR and SK on the same stage again (for the second time as SK played at the Hammersmith gig last year).

I've only seen him about 5 times since 2006 (I was never lucky enough to see Free).
PR shows are a bit short, but as you say...it is always worth it to hear the Great Man sing live. At Hammersmith he sounded as if he had some sort of throat infection, but he still sounded wonderful!!

PR is definitely my favourite vocalist EVER.  big_smile  big_smile  big_smile

You are so right about how young they all were.  Andy was a sprite 15 year old with John Mayall.
How incredible was that!

You mentioned a reunion of Free.  Can I ask when you heard of it, like what year, and the other 2 guys being interested?  I ask because I don't really recall.  I can see Simon being up to it, but was Andy interested in doing that?  I wasn't sure what with how close they were to Kossoff and how it affected them if the 3 ever talked about getting together again?  I do know that Andy played with Paul when Paul did Woodstock 2.  That was great to see.

Also, I think it is wonderful that you are bringing Free songs to the forefront.  Especially some that are more obscure but just as great. With you having a keen ear to Paul Rodgers as a vocalist, you're already a step ahead when it comes to singing. "Oh I Wept" is a great song to learn how to be subtle with your vocals.  If you ever video tape your performance,  please post it if you want to.
Thanks for keeping Free Alive and I hope you have a lot more fun smile
