Topic: Joe's signature on Auralex GRAMMAs

I saw Joe's signature on the pic:

I'm wondering how *essential* these are to one's sound. I've been thinking of getting one, especially since the new cabinet I got doesn't have wheels OR rubber feet... the entire bottom of the cabinet is on the carpet.  hmm

Re: Joe's signature on Auralex GRAMMAs

Those actually work great.  The bass response is considerably improved and the drums don't rattle as much.  We used these for a while when our drummer decided he wanted to go "electronic kit" and wasted 10 grand on that stuff to put into a room that acoustically was the equivalent of a wet mop.  The auralex really helped.

Re: Joe's signature on Auralex GRAMMAs

Why not just put the cab on wheels?  It'd be cheaper, sound better and be easier to move around.

Guitars: '79 LP Custom, '01 Dickey Betts Goldie - 80 of 114, '00 Chandler Lectraslide
Amps: '00 Marshall 1987x, '70 Marshall 1959 SL, 4x12 JBL D120s
'64 Vibroverb - JBL D130, '66 Super Reverb - CTS Alnicos
'77 Peavey Deuce (great for melting stubborn ear wax)

Re: Joe's signature on Auralex GRAMMAs

Is there an advantage to having the GRAMMA over wheels sonically?

Re: Joe's signature on Auralex GRAMMAs

I think so... my bass player's casters are awful and unstable, the auralex really helps.  But our studio is so crappy that any improvement helps.

Re: Joe's signature on Auralex GRAMMAs

So I had my 4x12 on wheels, but now I have this nifty vertical 2x12. I might pop for the auralex GRAMMA.  cool

It does appear to be a gimmick that most pragmatic musicians might scoff at... so I'm hoping it lives up to expectations. Just "blindly" following your favorite artist by buying the gear they use, topwrapping strings, etc. can easily get over the top. But I do want this thing to function!

Re: Joe's signature on Auralex GRAMMAs

There is a demo of them on youtube.  They seem to make a difference but it also seems like the guy turns the guitar up louder with the Auralex under the amp..  I'm sure they work though, with the volumes Joe plays at..they must do something.  I spoke to a guy from sweetwater.com about them not too long ago and he vouched for them saying they work fantastic.  The smaller one is pretty inexpensive so it might be worth a shot.  Please don't put wheels on the gorgeous Forte cab! -Seth

I have never used the iso pads, GRAMMA, Joe does. But I have used other hard foam pads between my cab and the floor. I believe it does help. However I'm not gigging and not recording. I'll leave the remainder up to y'all.

Re: Joe's signature on Auralex GRAMMAs

If you have say a hollow stage or an old theatre stage, it will get rid of that booming, bass heavy side of it. It separates nicely the amp from any different surfaces its on.
I recommend them.

They work very well. One of those things you need to try in order to "get it"

Re: Joe's signature on Auralex GRAMMAs

Ok, I finally got one for my vertical 2x12.

I found the ground doesn't vibrate any more! The sound is more focused from my speakers which is good.
I put a plexi shield in front of it, and I was left turning up my 100 watt head. I might try band practice next week at old volumes and without the shield. We shall see.

D@mn you, now I'm gonna have to get one of these if it means I will have to turn up even more!  Any reason is worth it.

Re: Joe's signature on Auralex GRAMMAs

I know!!!

Another reason to have one (from what I've heard) is that once you have your EQ setup while on the GRAMMA, it doesn't need much or any changing from venue to venue. I'll post an update if this is untrue. Might have to wait until July 16th for my next gig though.

Re: Joe's signature on Auralex GRAMMAs

Rather than start another "Auralex" thread, I thought I'f resurrect this one for my own personal update:

I picked up 2 Grammas a few weeks back and the 50 bucks I spent on each was well worth it. I can vouch for all the above mentioned benefits, especially the much tighter low end sound. Found I was turning the bass up on my amps. I have used them several times before posting just to be sure I was sold on them. I'd say to anyone considering, buy one. Paired extremely well with my Class5, took away the crappy low end fuzz and resonance that comes with a small amp. Very pleased with the results. -S
