Topic: San Bruno, California Tragedy

Heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to all the families.  I hope none of our California Bonafamily is close to this.  I cannot even imagine the loss they must all feel.

Thank you Patty, I'm still awaiting word from a close friend of mine who grew up in San Bruno and lives in Benicia now. His parents still live in San Bruno and I've known them as long as I've known Bob and hope they weren't affected by this disaster. Hoping to hear soon.

Re: San Bruno, California Tragedy

Prayers answered, just talked with my friend Bob and Gordon & Ginger are fine, but rattled from the explosion and being without power most of the night. They were about a half mile from the fire and didn't need to evacuate. Bob rattled off about a dozen friends names whose homes are completely destroyed. The area has been declared a disaster area and people are still being accounted for as many are still missing. PG&E is trying to determine if they are responsible or not for the gas main rupture that triggered the disaster. Initial reports thought a plane had crashed coming out of SFO right next to San Bruno.

Re: San Bruno, California Tragedy

As this story unfolds a few residents from the neighborhood have told news crews how they complained to PG&E about a gas odor several days ago and how the gas co. wasn't responding in a very urgent manner. I see a rate hike coming soon.

Re: San Bruno, California Tragedy

As the investigation continues into this careless disaster the NTSB put out the call to residents who smelled gas in the area and the ones in particular who phoned Pacific Gas & Electric to find if the Utility Co. was negligent in their response. PG&E's CEO took out a full page ad in Sunday's SF Examiner, a la BP Oil, to express their condolences to the community, but not exactly taking responsibility.....yet. This wasn't a one out of the ordinary incident since these volatile gas mains run through heavily populated areas all over the country. Many are aging to the point of fatigue and aren't being maintained. This is another example of infrastucture collapse like the bridge failure in Minnesota.

Re: San Bruno, California Tragedy

The line was reported to have been installed in the mid 40's. I know that the local gas co. looks for leaks all the time because they found an underground leak on my property I had no idea was there. They have "sniffer trucks" that constantly patrol to detect leaks before they become a problem. My main feed had corroded and had 6 separate leaks. My line is of a similar age although not high pressure. The first I knew was when I saw yellow plastic markers stuck in the ground in my back yard. It was their line and it was promptly repaired at no cost to me.

Re: San Bruno, California Tragedy

Don't know if this is truth or rumor, but my friend Bob told me yesterday that a Google Earth photo showed a long asphalt patch in the spot prior to where the main ruptured as well as inspectors @ the scene reporting this section of pipe had many short pieces not typical of a main line this big. Bottom line, this was an accident waiting to happen and for some reason wasn't urgently taken to task.

Re: San Bruno, California Tragedy

There's a lot of rumor running wild right now. I just can't believe there was no response to alleged reports of widespread gas smell for several days. The phone banks are continuously recorded at all public utilities so the truth will out in the end. I know that if you report a gas smell in the home here, there is a gasco man at your house in very short order, usully within 45 minutes. There's even a hotline for contractors to call if they have questions about underground lines and a rep will come and sort it out.  My cynical mind smells a lot of lawyers fishing for a big payday on the backs of the injured and dead.  hmm Agreed that aging infrastructure is an issue. PUC's should have plenty of cash to fix that stuff. If they don't , as you say, a rate increase is forthcoming.

Re: San Bruno, California Tragedy

Tonights evening news is revealing no truth to the reports of gas smell being reported prior now. These stories grow legs in such disasters real fast, but some proof may yet be revealed. They shipped the chunk of pipe that blew out of the ground back to DC today for extreme analysis @ the NTSB lab.
