Topic: Any Bourbon Drinkers?

Surely a perfect partner for the blues (preferably with some nice weed or maybe just a cigar). Really getting into the stuff recently and was in heaven when I went to London on Saturday trying lots of different sorts (Makers Mark, Woodford Reserve, Old Grandad 114, Wild Turkey, Rittenhouse Rye, Jim Beam Rye, JD, JD 1954 Gold Medal, Knob Creek, Mint Juleps - and right now I'm trying a bottle of Fighting Cock that I brought my brother as a goin gaway present (potent!)

For any fans, a little inside info, get down to Tescos ASAP! Jim Beam Black label, marked up as £22 something scans up as a tenner, made sure to empty the shelf lol

So who likes what? Any favourites, really liked the Jim Beam Rye, Old Grandad 114 and the JD Gold Medal 54, another fave is Gentleman Jack, must say though I cannot really enjoy Old #7 JD anymore sadly, once u try the good stuff its really hard to go back.

Re: Any Bourbon Drinkers?

Knob Creek (owned by Jim Beam) makes a very nice single barrel bourbon.

just a side note though...The fine folks in Bourbon County Kentucky take offense to sour mash wiskey's produced outside of the county being referred to as bourbon

Re: Any Bourbon Drinkers?

yeah I know lol sorry haha, I also listed Ryes as well my bad. I do know the differences but its just easier to say Bourbon rather than American Whiskey. Maybe I should say Whiskey but thyen I'm not much of a scotch drinker.

Also one of the nicest Bourbons (actually labeled as Kentucky style bourbon whiskey) I have ever had was one called Old Virginia and was actually made in france.

In honor of my grandfather who introduced me to it. Old Granddad bond. He was from that neck of the woods and swore by it. Of course, he grew up on the stuff that was clear and came in mason jars. wink   big_smile

haha I was actually very sad not to get to try Georgia Moon corn whiskey whilst out, its the nearest thing to traditional moonshine apparently. Its clear, made entirely from corn, aged less than 30 days and even comes in a replica mason jar lol

Will try next time

Re: Any Bourbon Drinkers?

I did until one fateful night when I was a young man and overindulged, way overindulged. I'll spare the gruesome details, but when I woke the next morning, the Milwaukee Railroad Freight yard was in my head. Since that day I have never been able to partake in any brown color liquor. Lesson learned.  roll

I once got very drunk on Jim Beam at a Birthday party at a Golf Club, my friends being the 18 year old idiots we were decided to have TVR shots (tequila vodak and rum) and then for some reason shots of Brandy. Brandy isn't the best drink to finish the night with after a full on session, let alone in shots. Well suffice to say my stomache was turned. I spilt my guts over the steps outside the function room, went back inside told everyone someone had yacked up, blamed it on my friend (which was believed), slow danced and made out with my girl (she didn't realsie of course lol) then went back to drinking!

I also have a great stoy involving a camping trip and a local brewed 8.4% cider! That one is still a running gag. I'll be brave and share eventually

I too have a few very funny drunk stories that border on the hard to believe. Like losing my glasses on the freeway while emptying my stomach out the window and then ultimately finding them. No, I wasn't driving, I was a passenger and the car was moving. Wore those same glasses for a year and a half after; thank goodness they fell into a snow bank. wink  lol

Re: Any Bourbon Drinkers?

Waking up in a sleeping bag in Baja after a campfire bottle of tequila and smores the night before. Realizing that a purge was iminent and crawling for the bushes. A heavy dew had caused the dust to turn into a very sticky clay. On all fours, covered with sticky goo and puking. Not a great way to wake up! Oh, and no water to wash off with except the 54 degree ocean! yikes  yikes

Re: Any Bourbon Drinkers?

very funny stories. I too had to give up the hard stuff, although it took a few encounters talking to Ralph on the porcelain telephone. I will share one that happened while in college at Alabama. I did not even know we were drinking that night, but was dragged to a friends house and presented with a full bottle of cheap tequila. The 3 of us took turns and downed the whole bottle in about 20 to 25 minutes. My first experience with tequila, I was bombed in short order. Then they decided it would be fun to go to a free movie in English building, Fellini's The Devils, which is spoken in Italian with English subtitles. I got upset because my eyes would not focus to read the screen, and began screaming and cussing everyone there. They had to drag me out of the balcony and get me down the stairs. I weighed a lot more than the 2 friends. That is the worst hangover I ever had, but would try tequila again many times before learning the lesson as Roy stated.

Re: Any Bourbon Drinkers?

Again I know its not Bourbon per say but first time trying Canadian Club today. YUM, really nice. I can really see what they mean by it not being either a Bourbon or a Scotch style Whisky, it really has its own character that sperates it, almost Liquor like. Not sure it stands next to my favourite Bourbons but I would certainly take it in preference to Old #7 or Jim Beam White. Certainly worthy of a place in your cabinet

Re: Any Bourbon Drinkers?

Canadians are tasty. A lighter style but unique in their own way. Most of the better ones are hard to find. Look for Crown Royal Special Reserve. It is probably available over there. There are several other aged reserves that are very good too. The best are all aged 18 to 20 years. Canadian Club has a reserve that is occasionally available.
