Re: Drummers Corner

I just now took the time to watch the Rodney Holmes vids Carl posted, and I found this... it's a short demo of his pattern played fast and slow...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ilVynAy … re=related

I'm actually planning to see him (and the rest of PRoJECT PERCoLAToR) in about a month, and I'm looking for people to join me.  I'll find that Jim Weider thread and bump that with the details.  wink

Re: Drummers Corner

lol  HA, guess what?  I just decided to look up Santana's official Smooth video to see if Rodney Holmes appeared (he drummed on the Supernatural album, but not on the tour, so I wasn't sure)... and yes, once in a while you do get a glimpse of him (sans the long hair).  But that's not what I'm laughing about.  Next, I notice a comment left just 3 hours ago questioning who he is... well that's not how the poster phrased his question, I can't post that kind of language here... but check out the comments... I just had to laugh at the timing of it all!  cool

Joey worked at a record store called "Music Land" and a gas station called "Sinclair's" he worked at the garage 4 nights a week for 10 hours after being tempted by a friend to get a job there. Joey likes to wear a black hood that says on it "Little People Kill People". The Tribal "S" that is now the slipknot logo, was originally drawn by Joey, Joey also drew the main Slipknot logo, and the big "K" and "T" may come from the fact that at that time he was a HUGE KoRn fan.

Re: Drummers Corner

my son really likes Joey J, he makes me listen to them now and then. not my kind of music.
I did a search Brack, and cannot believe we left this guy out...........Carmine Appice. He has played with a slew of artists through the years. I was fortunate to see them back in the early 70's after the release of their first album. All I can remember is that they were very loud.

Thanks Tres ... This is when i first heard of Carmine ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXN8Kp1-w-4
I pulled some more info on him...
Carmine Appice...
"Carmine Appice set the foundation for heavy drumming ... before Bonham,
before Ian Paice... before anyone else." - Rick Van Horn, 1999 Modern
Drummer magazine.

2002 marks the 35th anniversary of the dawn of the career of the legendary Carmine Appice, who continues to inspire drummers and listeners throughout the world with his originality and his unwavering dedication to the art of drumming. He has broken new ground in every aspect of his career; as a performer, as a teacher, and as a writer. From his early days with VANILLA FUDGE, considered by many to be the first heavy rock band, it was clear that Carmine was creating new standards for rock drumming. Truly, a different drummer. . .

After VANILLA FUDGE, Carmine went on to form CACTUS with bassist Tim Bogert. CACTUS has been cited as a major influence on such artists as KING’S X and Alex and Eddie Van Halen. This unionwith Bogert evolved into an alliance with Grammy-winning guitar hero, Jeff Beck, a stellar combination of talent known internationally as BECK, BOGERT, and APPICE.

One of the premier showmen in rock, he became known worldwide for his astonishing live performances, in addition becoming a highly sought-after session drummer, recording with countless artists throughout the seventies. In 1976, his friend Rod Stewart invited Carmine to join his band, after auditioning more than forty other drummers. As a member of THE ROD STEWART BAND, Carmine exhibited yet another talent: writing hit songs. “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?” and “Young Turks” were two of his biggest singles.

After a rewarding period with Rod Stewart, Carmine left to pursue his own projects. His first solo album ROCKERS, was followed by tours of the U.S. and Japan with an all-star band. Next Carmine led the high-energy band KING KOBRA, recording two albums on Capitol records, and touring internationally.

Carmine’s discography demonstrates his broad musical scope, having worked with artists ranging from Stanley Clarke to Ozzy Osbourne; from Ted Nugent to Pink Floyd. Such versatility stems from Carmine having been influenced by the jazz drumming of Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa, combined with extensive classical training..

As an educator, Carmine was the first to legitimize rock drumming with his landmark book, REALISTIC ROCK. This revolutionary drum method book, which has sold more than 300,000 copies, is now available as a video. It was the first book about rock drumming that was actually written by a rock drummer. REALISIC ROCK was voted among the top 25 drum books of all time by MODERN DRUMMER magazine and has been studied by such drum luminaries as Greg Bissonette and Dave Weckl. The book has been updated with a new section on linear techniques, and an accompanying CD.

Carmine was also the first rock drummer to conduct instructional clinics and symposiums held on college campuses, theaters, and music stores around the world, a tradition he still continues. His clinics and master classes continue to break attendance records at venues in every country.

Currently Carmine is producing and marketing instructional videos for his new company, POWER ROCK, featuring numerous artists including CHICAGO drummer Tris Imboden, CINDERELLA’s Fred Coury, and of course, Carmine Appice. Another facet of his educational output will be reflected in his upcoming contribution, THE CHILDREN’S BOOK OF RHYTHM, to influence yet another generation.

Some of Carmine’s world tours have been with the Geffen Records super group BLUE MURDER, featuring guitarist extraordinaire John Sykes, from WHITESNAKE, and Tony Franklin of THE FIRM, and with the legendary EDGAR WINTER GROUP. Being a performer with universal appeal, his playing reaches more than just drummers, as evidenced by proclamations of “Carmine Appice Day” in Los Angeles and four other major U.S. cities, in recognition of his contributions to music, drumming, and music education. He was further immortalized in 1991 by his induction into the Hollywood Rock Walk, his handprints and signature side by side with his idols Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. This year the Hollywood Rock Walk is issuing a commemorative book, with a full page on Carmine, next to a page on superstar James Brown.

Re: Drummers Corner

This guy hasn't been mentioned yet..... as far as i know!
Chris Whitten (born 26 March 1959) is a British session drummer who provided drums for the hit singles "What I Am" by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians, "World Shut your Mouth" by Julian Cope and "The Whole of the Moon" by The Waterboys. Two critically acclaimed projects in the 1990s were Paul McCartney's Flowers In The Dirt album and Dire Straits final world tour from 1991-1992 to accompany their last studio album, On Every Street.
Whitten unusually has used a Noble & Cooley drum kit which are radically designed drums. The toms and snare are single-ply, steam-bent shells which give them (especially the snare) a distinctive sound. He has also recorded with such varied musicians as Tom Jones, Johnny Cash, The Pretenders, ABC and The The.
Whitten has been an active participant and Honorary VIP Member of the Drummer Cafe community forum since 2003.

I had the great pleasure of watching this trio this year, and playing this song. Toss and Travis did a 10 minute jam to give Robben a rest since he was ill. The club was full of drummers and bassmen there just to check those guys out.

Thanks jakey, nice find!  Good drummer no doubt! Has an unusual style, but it works for him. Uses a lot of cymbal chokes, and quite hard to perfect.
