Re: What do you think of Marshall Head and 2X12

True, but the onboard speaker is always rated higher than the output of the amp ( unless you're looking for speaker distortion which is fine if it's your thing ).

It really depends on what you're looking for, but a very good 2x12 is goign to be better than a cheaper 4x12 anyways, so go for the best you can go in a 2x12 instead of cutting corners on an average 4x12... There are too many options out there, I agree... smile

and shall i ditch the idea of a 1X12???
Kinda had myself a little idea of a mini stack goin on with a Marshall 1X12 a Blues Junior on top and the Sovtek head to power the 1X12.

No???

Guitars: 95 Les Paul Standard, Relic Strat,

Re: What do you think of Marshall Head and 2X12

I like 1x12 cabs... I have two under a Blackheart Handsome Devil head and it sounds absolutely killer, it's loud as hell, and feels awesome when it's cranked. But it's only 15 watts... For anything above 50 watts, I think a 2x12 is the absolute minimum you should get to enjoy the ride at its fullest... But maybe that's just me... big_smile I'm actually looking for a 2x12 cab myself at the moment... Haven't decided yet.

Are the Marshall 1922 and 1932's as bad as some say?

Re: What do you think of Marshall Head and 2X12

By the best Cab you can afford, weither its a 1x12, 2x12 of a 4x12. Try and stay away from a cheaply built partical board cab. Really YOU need to try some and see what you like. All of them will sound different and get you different places tone wise, so think about tone and portablility.

Re: What do you think of Marshall Head and 2X12

Decision time again. I need a cab for my 50 watt Jubilee clone. Which should I take?

The 2x12 Marshall 2061CX http://www.zzounds.com/item--MSH2061CXA … sku=601124
Wattage is not an issue here, as I'll put in different speakers wired at 16 ohm

or

the 4x12 1960AHW http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/prod … shall-1960

For practical reasons I'd prefer the 2x12 but the biggest decisive factor is how cab size influences tone. The 2x12 is 63x63x31 (in centimeters) or 25 1/4" x 25 1/4" x 12". Is that ok for a 50 watt Jubilee?

Since this thred started I am playing a wondeful, all original 50 watt JMP from '73. I have tried it with a 2x12, but nothing is as nice as running it through a 4X12. I tried a few but ended up using the Marshall Vintage Modern with the 25watt Celetion Greenbacks.
Worth remembering wattage is measured before breakup so quite often an amp measured at 50 watts is putting out a lot more.
I used the 1960 measured at 300 watts but there was not a great amount of 'Speaker Distortion' (which I happen to love).
With the Greenbacks they are just being pushed that much harder.
I'd go with the 1960BHW. Listen to the start of Live Wire form High Voltage by AC/DC. Mal's guitar tone is an amp breaking up but there is also an amount of speaker distortion. That adds to the vintage sound IMHO.

Re: What do you think of Marshall Head and 2X12

Hi 4x12 will always sound bigger , but if you are gigging ar have lack of room and need something smaller then 2x12 openback is the way to go IMO .

I have an original jubilee closeback 2x12 with celestion greenbacks which sounds great but my openback 2x12 with evm12ls is far superior for my jubilee 2553 50w

Speaker break up is desirable with some amps, But amps with HIGH GAIN may benifit from speakers that dont breakup to easily , so you can hear the true sound of the amplifier but it is totally down to individual taste .

Re: What do you think of Marshall Head and 2X12

Here's my alternative to a Marshall Head & Cab :

Blows Marshall away IMHO. Hand wired, designed by ex-Marshall techies and is Plexi on Channel 1 and Fender Blacface/Vox AC30 on Channel 2. EL84's and GX34 rectifier. Amazing sound.

Keep in mind, essentially all of Joe's amps are being played through 2x12s.  He uses 4 amps through 8 speakers, and they are split vertically in pairs.  So yes, it is definately do-able.  As far as Marshalls go, the age old problem is the volume.  Most venues and stages just don't tolerate the dB's necessary to make a Marshall sound it's best.  I think this is a bunch of BS on the behalf of the soundmen and owners, but whatever.  I always thought rock and roll was suppose to be loud?  What's the old expression..."If it's too loud, you're too old"?  tongue

Yea man, I F**KING HATE SOUNDMEN!!!!!!!!

Has anyone ever stopped to think why Rock sounded so good in the late 60's / 70's?
... Cause the PA's were so bad the band's had to crank the plexi's. That WAS the tone!
Now everything's mic'd and kept at low leval, the whole dynamics of rock has changed.
A friend of mine knows the guys in Snow Patrol and got shown their stage recently at a gig and all the 4X12 cabs on stage were just for looks.
Underneath the stage in enclousures was were all the real amps were. And they weren't 100 watt Silver Jubilies!

Anyway rant over for today.

PS, Think I'm gonna get a Zilla (british made custom cabs) 2X12 to run with a DSL 100. Looked at the Marshall 2X12's but they seem to be made out of cheese. The Zilla is Birch.
Only choice in Greenbacks or Vintage 30's any ideas?

PS Still havn't got round to getting the baffles I emailed you about on YouTube a month or so ago.
But thanks again for the details on how to do it.

Nev.

I rolled into a club about a year ago with 3 4X12 cabs and 2 100W heads.  The sound guy put a mic on one of my cabs then walked back a minute later and took it away.  Didn't say a word otherwise.
