Max Weinberg...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KW86Vr9E … re=related
Since the premiere of "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" on September 13, 1993, music director Max Weinberg has led the Max Weinberg 7 which is widely regarded as the "best band in late night TV". Weinberg has also become a featured performer in Late Night comedy skits, including "Max's Greatest Hits," "Max on Max," "The Band Is Jealous," "Max's Poetry," and the popular send-ups of NBC's public service announcements.
In 2000, The Max Weinberg 7 released their first CD. The self-titled release features a collection of the familiar music audiences have been enjoying for years on "Late Night."

In February 1999, Weinberg took a leave of absence from "Late Night" to join Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band for a historic reunion. This was their first world tour in over a decade and one of the most anticipated and celebrated concert tours of 1999/2000. The tour wrapped up on July 1, 2000 after an explosive ten-night-stand at New York's Madison Square Garden and has returned Weinberg to the helm of the Max Weinberg 7.

As the long-time drummer for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band (1974-1989) Weinberg has performed for millions of people around the world and been featured at many prestigious events, including the 1993 and 1997 Presidential Inauguration Galas, the 1995 Grammy Awards and the 1995 Gala Concert for the dedication of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, where he rejoined his former group. Called "the rhythmic backbone of the E Street Band," by Robert Palmer of The New York Times, Weinberg was invited to perform in the East Room of the White House in December 1996 and served as the music director for Comic Relief 8 starring Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams at Radio City Music hall in New York City.

Cited by the "Playboy"Pop and Jazz Music Poll (1985) and the "Rolling Stone" Critics Poll (1986) as Best Drummer, Weinberg has performed or recorded with some of contemporary music's biggest names including Sting, Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Barbra Streisand, Ringo Starr, Natalie Merchant, Pete Townshend of the Who and Meatloaf. Weinberg's performances on the classic rock albums "Born in the U.S.A." by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and "Bat Out of Hell" by Meatloaf earned him the distinction of having played on the first and second largest selling albums in rock history.

Weinberg is also the author of "The Big Beat: Conversations with Rock's Great Drummers," in which he interviewed many of his personal musical heroes, including Ringo Starr and Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones. He is the producer of the Rhino Records series "Max Weinberg: Let There Be Drums" and has also performed his one-man show, "An Evening with Max Weinberg," at more than 150 colleges throughout the United States and Canada. During this multimedia presentation, Weinberg takes his audience through the ups and downs of his 25-plus year career, with a special emphasis on his "Late Night" experiences.

Re: Drummers Corner

Rick Marotta...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZTamRbvEao

Marotta's ability to lay down the perfect groove, unburdened by ego and needless complexity, has enshrined his drumming on records by Aretha Franklin, Carly Simon, Steely Dan, James Taylor, Paul Simon, John Lennon, Hall & Oates, Stevie Nicks, Wynonna, Roy Orbison, Todd Rundgren, Roberta Flack, Peter Frampton, Quincy Jones, Jackson Browne, Waylon Jennings, Randy Newman, Kenny G., the Jacksons, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and many others. He has also worked extensively as a producer, music director, and film and television composer.

Marotta's less-is-more attitude is all the more distinctive given that he came of musical age during the '70s, when showy drum work was the norm. "That's how I developed my attitude in the first place," he says. "When I wa coming up as a musician, there were a lot of truly great drummers like Neil Peart and Terry Bozzio, guys who played a lot of notes and did it very well. But the more notes I heard other guys play, especially in fills, the fewer I would play. At first, it was just a matter of taste, but then I started getting a lot of session calls because of that attitude."

Remarkably, Rick never hit a drum until he was 19. "As far as I'm concerned," he says, "that was a great advantage! I just took these drum sticks the size of baseball bats and started hitting the drums as hard as I could. I still believe that just flailing away is a great way to start out on a instrument. If you have any talent at all, it will come out. After that you can go back and learn the rudiments."

Marotta's straight-ahead attitude hasn't prevented him from creating innovative parts that not only contributed to memorable hits but have also been studied and imitated by countless other players. "If you play simply," argues Rick, "you can even play freakier, more imaginative stuff in a tasteful way." He cites examples from his own work: 'Hour That the Morning Comes', from James Taylor's Dad Loves His Work, where Rick cemented the offbeat parts via careful repetition, and the syncopated, deep-pocket patterns of 'Peg' from Steely Dan's Aja.

"I suppose," says Rick, "that the sessions I'm proudest of are ones like that, where I played something different from what everyone else was doing at the time. But on the other hand, I really liked some of the ones that were just plain simple, like James Taylor's 'Walking Man'."

Today, Marotta keeps it not only simple, but small: One of his current kits is a compact Yamaha Hipgig set. "It's a small kit where all the drums fit into each other," he explains. "Some people see it and think it's a toy, but it sounds amazing. I use it on a lot of gigs. When I played the Hipgig kit behind Sheryl Crow, everyone freaked out at how good it sounded. Same with Michael McDonald — everyone was talking about the great drum sounds. That little 16" bass drum sounds like a 20". It's punchy, with a lot more depth than you'd expect. The small snare drum sounds great too, especially with the added-on wood rim. It's a great cross-stick sound. I turned my brother on to the kit (Rick's younger brother is Jerry Marotta, another top-tier session man). He tells me that he uses them all the time, because the bass drum sounds so unbelievable. He's been swatting them hard, and he's a bigger guy than me. And now I hear that a lot of guys are showing up with them at sessions here in LA."

Marotta has accepted fewer drumming gigs as his composing career has accelerated. (He is currently scoring three TV shows: Everybody Loves Raymond, Imagine That, and Yes, Dear). But even if Marotta is writing more parts than he's reading these days, his philosophy remains the same: "I bring to composing the same attitude I bring to drumming," he says. "Simple is usually better."

Re: Drummers Corner

Larry Mullen Jr..
Larry Mullen, Jr.
(b. October 31, 1961)
(Alias: Duke Dalton, Babyface Mullens)
Larry was born and raised in Artane, located the north side of Dublin, at 60 Rosemount Avenue. He had to add the "Junior" to the end of his name to distinguish himself from his father, Larry Mullen, Sr. As Larry's career blossomed, so did his tax bills and his father was the unlucky recipient of them. Larry's past gigs included playing drums for the Post-Office Workers Union Band and the Artane Boys' Band. He even played at the St. Patrick's Day Parade in O'Connell Street.

Larry began drumming in 1971, taking classes with Ireland's best-known drummer, Joe Bonnie and afterward by his daughter Monica. However, Larry has said that his drumming style is "unteachable" and that spirit and instinct are what guides his drumming style. His sister, Cecilia, bought him his first drum-kit in 1973 for £17. He placed a notice at the infamous Mount Temple Comprehensive School in the fall of 1976, and his life has not been the same since. Although everyone knows the band as U2, Larry claims that the band's name is really "The Larry Mullen Band."

His award-winning career includes 14 Grammy Awards, the Rory Gallagher Musician of the Year Award from Hot Press Magazine, 8 Brit Awards, as well as many others. He has also served as a judge for the Shortlist Music Prize.

Although he has been plagued with a battle with tendonitis it has been curbed by specially-designed drumsticks from ProMark.

Besides U2, Larry has done some side projects with artists like Nanci Griffith, Daniel Lanois, Emmylou Harris, Robbie Robertson, Paul Brady and B.B. King among others. In honor of the Irish National Football team's bid for the World Cup in 1990, Larry co-wrote and co-produced the anthem "Put 'Em Under Pressure." He also worked with fellow band mate Adam Clayton on the theme to Mission: Impossible for the film's release in 1996. Larry and Adam also teamed up with Mike Mills and Michael Stipe to form the group "Automatic Baby" for Bill Clinton's Inauguration in 1993 at MTV's Inaugural Ball.

Known for his love of Harley Davidson, he has been known to drive his Harley from gig to gig, clocking over 10,000 miles on the Zoo TV tour alone. He is also known for his fandom for Elvis Presley. Other hobbies he has been interested in include practicing karate, following the Irish National Football team, playing pranks on people, as well as stealing the spotlight with a karaoke machine.

He has been with his partner, Ann, for over 20 years. Together they have 3 children, Aaron Elvis (born October 4, 1995), Ava (born December 23, 1998) and a son born in February 2001. He has also been a dog owner, thanking his Labradors JJ and Missy on past albums.

Re: Drummers Corner

Watched a TV Doc on Fleetwood Mac last night, and thought, Mick hadn't been included here yet! Going to put that right now ...

Mick Fleetwood...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=va9Fs7IX … re=related

Mick Fleetwood is best known for his tremendous success as the drummer of Fleetwood Mac, the wildly successful band he co-founded in 1967 with fellow John Mayall alumni Peter Green (guitar) and John McVie (bass). The turmoil of the band's meteoric rise to superstardom is well-known and documented in its own entry; Fleetwood himself eventually lost his marriage after it was discovered in 1973 that his wife was having an affair with Mac guitarist Bob Weston.

After the supporting tour for 1979's Tusk, Fleetwood recorded his debut solo album, The Visitor, which was released in 1981 and displayed the drummer's interest in worldbeat. After the 1982 Mac album Mirage, Fleetwood cut a second solo record, 1983's I'm Not Me, which featured cameos from several Mac members.

Fleetwood Mac went on hiatus until 1987, when Fleetwood's declaration of bankruptcy prompted the reunion LP Tango In the Night; even Lindsey Buckingham was persuaded to join in, albeit only in the studio. Even as the band's classic '70s lineup splintered, Fleetwood kept versions of the band going throughout the '90s, without enjoying much commercial success until the full-fledged reunion on 1997's The Dance.
