Topic: Overdrive pedal for SPL copy

Hi,
I've got a 50 watt superlead copy and OCD, and I'm trying to get Joe's tones... OCD is good but it changes the overall sound and I think ,I need something more transparent. I live in Poland and here the TS 808 is really expensive, used OCD from US with shipping and everything is a little bit more than half of the price of the new 808 in Poland... So, maybe one of this pedals will do the job:

1) Way Huge Pork Loin ( but I dunno if i need so many knobs smile )
2) Fulltone Fulldrive 2
3) TS 9 ( used one are really cheap here)
4) Maxon OD 808 ( also cool price even for the new ones)
5) Maxon OD 9 ( price is the same as the od808)
6) Xoic AC booster ( i don't know if it will do the job)
7) Xotic BB preamp ( I've heard that it's TS and way more)
Don't get me wrong I like the way it sounds now but... Maybe it's just another GAS attack big_smile

I need something to boost the gain and add some midrange.

I didn't play any of these pedals so I hope You guys will help me smile

Honestly with an amp like that I wouldn't want to put any pedal in front of it as it will always alter the beautiful Marshall tone. I would get an attenuator and crank it into smooth overdrive, boost the mids on the front of the amp and use your volume control on the guitar to go from clean(ish) to dirty to solo. Also don't attenuate it too much, part of the sound is the speakers getting a good thumping! I use greenbacks with my 50 watt jmp and run the amp on 7 and pull the db down with a powerbrake. With my Les Paul, it is all the tone i will ever need.

Guitars: 95 Les Paul Standard, Relic Strat,
Amps: 1973 Marshall JMP 50 head and Vintage Modern Cab. I use no effects other than a Cry Baby on occasions.

Re: Overdrive pedal for SPL copy

It's a 50 watt copy with 2 master volume knobs on the back so one of it is on 8 second on 10 and I use it as a boost for solos. It's got also a FX loop smile . I like the way it sounds on itself but I need more gain so what should I buy? I use 2 x 12 handmade cabinet loaded with Greenbacks smile

Oh I didn't think it was a master volume amp, sorry. I would get a Maxon OD 9 or a Boss SD-1. That will give you more butter for solos. Set the gain to very low and turn the level up full. Shouldn't change the original sound much, just make it a little fatter. Another great pedal is the Keeley Katana I use to run one of those with my Ceriatone Overtone Special.

Re: Overdrive pedal for SPL copy

Maxon OD 9 or 808? And can You tell the difference between Maxon 808 and Ibanez TS 808 RI?

I really like the TS - 9 Circuit and I think there is a little more graininess to the sound. The 808 is softer. I always likes an 808 into a Fender amp and a TS - 9 into an overdriven Marshall for some reason. I believe the Maxon od - 9 to be better sounding than the reissue TS-9 also.

So I guess, also as it's reasonable price the Maxon is the winner.
Good luck.

Re: Overdrive pedal for SPL copy

So maybe Stratpaulguy86 can help me coz I saw he's got SPL copy, OCD, TS 808 and few other pedals... For now maxon 0d9 is the winner smile

Re: Overdrive pedal for SPL copy

Another thought is the Xotic EP-Booster.  It gives up to 20dB of clean boost. On my 100W Super Lead I get more overdrive up to 10-11 o'clock, after that more drive and loudness. It really slams the front of the amp (which these amps love). It also fattens up your tone in a way that's hard to describe. Clean Strats really sound great with it, but I love it with the LP as well.

If it matters I play the Sg special faded smile

Re: Overdrive pedal for SPL copy

Lovepedal PurplePlexi is supposed to be a great pedal, but I haven't heard it.

Ask and ye shall receive brother!  For rock tones, one of my favorite combinations is my '58 RI Les Paul, Fulltone OCD, Maestro Echoplex EP-3, and the Superlead.  The Fulldrive 2 or TS808 also work really well, but there's something edgier about the OCD that just reminds you of all those great 70's/80's rock tones.  For a more vintage flavor I prefer the Fulltone Catalyst pedal which is a cross between a germanium type fuzz and a FET overdrive like the Fulltone Fat Boost.  It really helps conjure up a very good Cream or early Jeff Beck tone from the plexi.  I'd love to get a chance to try the new Plimsoul pedal from Fulltone as I hear it's like a really good OCD with even more gain and tweakablility.  As you can probably tell I'm a total nut for Fulltone stuff.  I've personally bought:

2 V.4 OCD's, one for me and the other for my dad
2 Mini Deja Vibes, one for me and the other for my dad (he later paid me for it)
1 Fulldrive 2 Mosfet
1 Catalyst
1 Octafuzz
1 '70 Fuzz

Almost picked up a Fatboost 2 and GT500 but neither really filled a niche that I didn't already have covered.  I hear that the TTE is to die for but I'm 100% satisfied with my 2 EP-3 Echoplex's.  So I totally recommend the OCD for your applications but do not overlook the Plimsoul or Catalyst either.  I'd try all three if possible and take home the one that vibes the best with your setup.

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

Re: Overdrive pedal for SPL copy

As I said I like OCD but while listening on YT tube screamers I always think " I need something like that", not to change the tone ( ocd does it a little) but something that will boost the gain and maybe add some mids smile. If I'll find used maxon od9 or ts9 RI I'll buy it and probably leave both (ocd & ts) in my board big_smile

EDIT: Today I've watched few videos on YT of EP booster, sounded really cool So, I turned drive on my ocd all the way down and cranked the volume. I think I need to have booster and a drive ( OCD) in my board... EP Booster is the one I want  big_smile .
