Topic: The 2010 PGA Championship…

This year’s last major kicks off tomorrow. Most of the world’s greatest golfers will be there to try and win the Wanamaker Trophy. For me on Friday, it will be a return visit to this beautiful Pete Dye designed course having been there for both the 2004 PGA Championship and the 2007 U.S. Senior Open. With its rolling hills, tight fairways, severe drop offs to Lake Michigan and some 1,200 sand bunkers, stepping onto the course for me for the first time was a little like walking on the moon. Never have I seen such a sight, not much unlike the famed Scottish Links courses. Who will win? You’re guess is as good as mine, but I’d say I’m pulling for Lefty to win it all. wink

Lefty has some serious health issues with a form of auto immune arthritis. It just was explained this morning and he will be on a special drug for a year and hope for remission. He would wake up unable to move with pain in every joint.

Re: The 2010 PGA Championship…

Whistling Straights is a beautiful course.  Wind will be an issue, as it should at such a prestigeous event.  Should be an absolutely fantastic event.

Roy - enjoy the show.  I love going to PGA events and usually catch 2 or 3 annually when the golfers are here on the West Coast Swing.

Lefty has arthritis and Woods is 17:1.  This is a great opportunity for someone from the field to man up and grab one.

Re: The 2010 PGA Championship…

Thanks Michael, I will most certainly. smile  I guess I should admit that I'm also pulling for my home state guy, Steve Stricker. If he could pull it off, the place would go wild as if the Packers won the Super Bowl. And even with Phil's disclosure of his illness, there is something special about the guy. The main thing on this course though is, you must drive the ball straight and keep it on the fairway. f you don't do that trust me, you're dead.

Re: The 2010 PGA Championship…

Lefty is good and works the croud very well but is disliked by the rest of the players.  His nickname amongst his peers...figjam.  The last 5 letters of this acronym stand for "i'm good, just ask me"  You can probably figure out what the first letter stands for

I'd love to see Stricker win as well.

Re: The 2010 PGA Championship…

I've got to root for my homeboy. Disliked by his peers, lays the ball where it needs to be, goes home with the cash. Go Lefty!

that being said about keeping it in the fairway, I told my son that Tiger doesn't have a prayer. He said, Tiger just birdied the first two holes. We'll just see if he can keep this up, he has to play better than last week. don't know who I'm pulling for at this point, but if he's in it at the end then I will be a fair weather tigger fan.

Re: The 2010 PGA Championship…

oh boy, more fog rolling in off the lake, later starts even for people that didn't finish yesterday, I think that includes Phil? I know who to pull for now, Bubba Watson. After that emotional interview, with the news his wife does not have a tumor, I hope he continues to play well. That really is a spectacular course Roy, I think watching it for lengthy periods actually lowers my blood pressure.

Re: The 2010 PGA Championship…

Looks like all the familiar faces are in the hunt. Beautiful intimidating course. Very reminiscent of a links course in Europe. Any misstep is doom on some of those holes. No one is tearing it up, that's for sure. Ernie Els looks very smooth.

Re: The 2010 PGA Championship…

Rick, his real name is Gerry, as in Gerry and the Pacemakers. yeah, makes me feel old as dirt to remember them. Did you get to see the interview yesterday? kind of strange, part total sincerity with his reaction to his wife's new diagnosis, and part comedian. He got through it though, big balls there.

I remember those guys too.  roll
I saw the interview. He handled it well. Now a new dark horse has emerged in Kuchar. Former US Amateur champ. Running away from the traditional leaders today at -6 right now. Phil and Tiger are at or around par.

Re: The 2010 PGA Championship…

Day two:

Matt Kuchar fired a second-round 69 to lead by one shot after an abbreviated day two of the USPGA Championship at Whistling Straits.
Fog again delayed the start but Kuchar was eight under at the close, one ahead of fellow American Nick Watney.
Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy and England's Simon Khan are in a seven-way tie for third on five under par.
Bad light meant Tiger Woods played only six holes and was seven off the pace, with half the field still to finish.
Woods, needing a top-15 finish to have a chance of qualifying automatically for the United States Ryder Cup team, was at his erratic yet occasionally brilliant best in parring all six holes before being forced off the course when one under.
At least the world number one, for now, will live to fight another day with a number of high-profile players unlikely to make round three after struggling in testing conditions.

606: DEBATE
What do you make of a fascinating second day in Wisconsin?
With the projected cut at two over, England's Ian Poulter and Paul Casey (both one over with 13 and 11 holes to play respectively) still have plenty to do, while Northern Ireland's US Open champion Graeme McDowell (+3), England's Luke Donald (+3 after nine) and Justin Rose (+4) and Spain's Sergio Garcia (+5 after six) are unlikely to return.
European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie had very little to cheer about after an 83 which left him bottom of the pile on 18 over. The Scot said: "It's been a very long day, a very long week unfortunately."
The Wisconsin fog once again descended on a very windy Whistling Straits to delay the start of day two by two and half hours but there were breaks in the changeable conditions and Kuchar took full advantage.
The 32-year-old from Florida was one of 78 players still on the course when play was abandoned on Thursday evening and finished his delayed first round to register a 67 before storming back out to card a 69.
He rolled in three straight birdies on his back nine to head into the clubhouse sitting pretty on top of the leaderboard before the overnight leaders had to come out and contend with the increasingly damp and blustery weather.

I'm only three behind and I feel as if I'm playing good golf
Rory McIlroy
"I'm very pleased with the way I've been playing. It's been a great year," said Kuchar, whose victory at Turning Stone last year was only his second on the PGA Tour and first since 2002.
"There's definitely an element of luck involved in winning. The best way to approach a week is to give yourself a chance Sunday, and if fate is on your side, you find yourself in the winner's circle."
Overnight leader Bubba Watson began his round in glorious style but fluffed a four-foot putt to miss out on a third consecutive birdie before three bogeys pegged him back to three under with nine holes still to play.
After his opening 69, Khan was tied for the lead with Kuchar on eight under at one stage thanks to three birdies on the back nine.
However, the Chingford star, winner of Europe's PGA Championship at Wentworth in May, crumpled in the closing stages with bogeys on the last three holes to leave him in the chasing pack three shots adrift.
"I didn't feel I did a lot wrong," Khan said. "I generally played well and it was just a shame about the finish but I'm still right in there."
Scotland's Martin Laird is also well-placed on four under with 10 holes still to play, but 21-year-old McIlroy could be the one most likely to threaten top-spot after an impressive 68.
Five birdies and one bogey got the Holywood native within three shots of the leader, with the highlight of his round a stunning chip to within 20 feet from a tricky position before sinking the putt for birdie at the eighth.
"The key is to just keep the mistakes off the card and I was lucky I did that," McIlroy said. "I think my chances are good, I'm only three behind and I feel as if I'm playing good golf."
South Africa's Ernie Els finished on two under, after a double-bogey on the last, alongside US Masters champion and world number two Phil Mickelson, who carded a three-under 69.
Mickelson, who began treatment for arthritis two weeks ago, said: "I did well and I'm within striking distance. I feel much better.
"I feel terrific now. I'd like to be higher up but I feel I can go and shoot six under and be right back in it."
Ireland's Padraig Harrington, eyeing one of Montgomerie's three wild cards for the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor in October, bounced back from his first-round 75 to knock in four birdies in six holes at the start of his second round.

Re: The 2010 PGA Championship…

A tough course, but some players are making it look easy despite the conditions. with all that rough and sand it's more like a target course like most in Az. Caught one of the announcers commenting on the ocean breeze, hey guys it's Lake Michigan. Weather/fog permitting they might actually finish this tomorrow.

Yes Tres, it sure is a spectacular course. Dawn and I arrived there about 8:00 am for Friday's round and it's a good thing we did, because as we arrived we knew there would be another delay. It was very strange to walk around the course in the fog, just being able to see about 80 yards ahead of you. We ventured down to the holes that border the lake and took up a position at the 7th, the long par 3. We put our chairs down above the green and were able to watch the shots coming in. We then were free to wander around at our own leisure.

Not only are the tickets up in price for this event, for Friday's round they were $95 plus tax, but food and drink were too. Example, 2 beers + 2 hamburgers = $28. Felt like I was being held up just like when I go to a Brewers game at Miller park. wink But all in all, it's worth every penny to spend an entire day watching the world's best players play a game that I only can pretend to play. cool

One more thing, we not only had hot and humid conditions, but late in the afternoon the wind really picked up blowing in directly off the lake. Then it began to rain, not a total downpour, but a consistent splash of rain. As I sat there watching play I thought, I guess this is how it must feel like to be in Scotland. How appropriate, I thought...... smile

Re: The 2010 PGA Championship…

That is very cool Roy. An apt description of Scottish links courses. The spitting rain and chilly wind blowing the thick Gorse and your ball careening into a deep pot bunker.
Rick
edit. The ruling of the grounding in the "bunker" seemed a far fetch since it was trampled by spectators. I thought a 3 way playoff would have been better.
