Late and lazy! roll At least it didn't come out Skinned Lizard.  tongue  I'll fix it. BTW, to entice donations, they had a pile of vintage CD's, DVD's and downloads for $180. The DVD was compiled from the promoter's vault. It is the entire show in the Oakland Coliseum.

Nah, too rich for my blood. Still trying to pay for the German excursion. Cool show though. Watch for it, since it is in the PBS archives for the specials. Great to see the star struck girls mooning for Peter. This was one of  the last shows with the original band members before the helicopter crash. it was cool to see the voice tube he used to get the distorted vocal effects up close.  cool

Helicopter crash???? WTF band are you talkin' about? I saw them @ the Concord Pavillion here in the East Bay in Sept. about a month and a half before the P-L-A-N-E crash.

The DVD is also available through wolfgangsvault.com   the site devoted to the Bill Graham archives. If you've never gotten lost in this site you have no idea what yer missin'. Posters, T-shirts, downloads, videos, Vault Radio, an absolute "candy store" for music lovers, especially for us in the Bay Area who attended many of these gigs over the years.

This version of Freebird is in the DVD Freebird the Movie. There were 2 shows that weekend, the one mentioned on 7/2 and also on 7/4. If you watch this pay attention to the Neil Young T-shirt Ronnie is wearing. Santana & The Outlaws also played on this bill, and no I missed this one as it fell on 4th of July, as I spent about 12 or more 7/4's in a row in Lake Tahoe during the '70s/'80s.

P.S. Rick, Frampton stole that voice box style from Joe Walsh(Rocky Mountain Way/1973). Anybody recall the voice box before Joe W.?

Thanks for the info. My hazy memory just came up with flying device and somehow it came out helicopter. It was great to see it on TV. That was at the end of my concert going days since we had started making babies and I was seriously broke!

That's cool, it's all etched in my brain since they were, and still are, my favorite band at the time of the crash. I was in a motel room in Charlotte, N.C. watching the World Series when the local station interupted the game with the news.

How does that voice box work? It kind of sounds like it is going through a Wah pedal. He had a flexible plastic tube taped to the mic that he would put in his mouth and sing into.

Re: Frampton and Lynyrd Skynyrd on PBS

1.  I was going to point out the helicopter/plane thing, but figured I'd already corrected the man's spelling, and it probably wouldn't be in good form to nitpick his facts too, lol... but I'm glad somebody else did, haha! tongue

2.  Rick, the wiki entry on the talk box might be helpful... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk_box
Also, Joe Pascarell of The Machine once posted a simple description of how to set one up:

hi , joe here...
the talk box i use is an original made by the first guy who made them , i believe is name is bob heil. i found it in the corner of a music store in northern california..the owner of the store gave it to me as a gift. when i got it home , i had my tech repackage it into a modern case with all new jacks and switches...a talk box is just a driver mounted to a plastic tube...you place it between the amp and speakers and the foot switch routs the output of the amp either to a speaker cab. (normal sound)or up the tube into your mouth. the tube must be next to a mic. thats hooked up to a PA system...thats it....you can build one if you are industrius....just make sure you get a driver that can hold the output of your amp...
my 2 cents
joe the guitar player

3.  J Dawg, according to that wiki entry, Peter Drake used a weak talk box on his steel guitar back in 1964, but the first high-powered talk box suitable for rock stages was developed by Bob Heil and the first one he built was for Joe Walsh... so there's your answer. smile

Re: Frampton and Lynyrd Skynyrd on PBS

That's good knowledge Vik, thanks for diggin' it up. Joe Walsh is a guy that JUST doesn't get enough credit.....one of my favorites. I loved it when Frampton used it in the Geico ad a few years ago.
