Topic: Moving On

After mulling over this decision for a period of time, I've decided it's time to move on.  The past three years I've spent a great deal of time (and money) on my passion for music, but the time has come to move on to other things.  Someone recently used the words "wallowing in nostalgia" to describe this forum, and though I 'd say that's a bit harsh, I do feel that the focus here rarely reaches the present unless the topic is about Joe Bonamassa or the opinions of a clique of core posters.  I've met some great people here and have been alerted to some great music and for that I'm grateful.
I'm looking forward to the BCC release and wish Joe and everyone the best.  It was fun being here........

Why don´t you tell us a bit more about this? It might start a useful discussion.

Re: Moving On

I think instead of leaving we should have a discussion on it. I don't think it's wallowing nostalgia, I do think that it's easier to talk about something that's already history. Plus, on my end, I listen to a lot of different types of music, from Gnarls Barkley to Joe to Sheryl Crow to ZZ Top to the Foo Fighters. There is so much music out there that oftentimes a lot of stuff just passes me by. For instance, I  just finally heard Grace Potter  - wow! I've been hiding under a rock. I feel like at the same time I'm playing catch up on all the old music I've missed and falling behind on all the new that is coming up.

Sorry you feel this way. I couldn't stop my passion for music if I tried. It doesn't have to cost money. But, if you have a problem, I respect your choice and wish you well.
I do feel the next part is a bit of a slap in the face to this forum and I take offense. This IS Joe's forum. Of course the chatter in General Topics and Show Reviews is about all things Joe. But there's tons of Gear info, Off Topics and Other Artists...."Core" Posters vary over time, but they are what keep this place dynamic....It is noted often, esp. to Newbies that number of posts has nothing to do with status. Very Democratic and inclusive IMHO.
I also don't get the nostalgia reference. There is always a new project/tour on the horizon. We are forward thinking. If it's issues beyond music..there's a conscious effort to stay neutral. There are lots of other places in CyberWorld to get into heated arguments. Not here.
All that said, I wish you the best and hope you visit often.   Cathy

Re: Moving On

If I ever saw a poster who has been here a while talk to a new one about being a noob or throwing it in their face because that poster's been around longer, I would have a serious problem with that. I think most people here would.

Besides what do you know? You only have 2.1 million posts and I have more.   lol

Ouch!  Guilty, once or twice.  Somebody jumped bad and ugly first post and I hammered 'em pretty hard.  I could've down that better and some folks said so.  OK, you're right.

I have also been a bit rough when I get tired of hearing the insults (not criticisms, mind you) being thrown at our host and my friend and yours.  Forgive me.   sad

One of em got banned, later anyway.  The other one is still here.

Nevertheles your point is good and that behavior never had anything to do with lording about time or post count.  You're right about that.

Re: Moving On

Just a note. I checked Curby's postings. All topics he has started are in Other Artists. 99% of his replies to posts are in Other Artists and Off Topics.

Nothing wrong with that he likes to share his music it just seems to be a lot more about others than it is about Joe. It might be that he gets frustrated with our devotion to Joe past and present.

Curby has been here for a long time and used the forum in a way that he got some satisfaction everybody with a few exceptions leaves active posting for some reason or another. Some feel they must give a reason. Whatever the reason when they do come back with few exceptions they are welcomed with open arms.

Curby, I Will miss your many new artist suggestions. Any new discoveries let us know.

Re: Moving On

Scott, it saddens me to read your post - you will be missed here I can assure you.
I, like many others on here, am indebted to you for some great recommendations of artists of whom I had no prior knowledge. I'd like to think some of those artists also owe you a debt of gratitude for those shouts.

I also know your love and enthusiasm for good music has helped you though some tough times in the short while we have been forum buddies - here and elsewhere. I sincerely hope the other things you talk about moving on to are not connected in any way. You can always drop me an e-mail through the forum any time Scott, and you know you'll always be welcome back here, even if it's only the occasional fleeting visit.

Take care my friend

Ian

I've always assumed you were coming from the right place. I'm more referring to, "I have more posts than you. I've been around longer than you have here. You don't know anything, you're just a noob." I've never seen that on here, not to my knowledge anyway.

Re: Moving On

I think I need to give a little clarification to my post yesterday.....

(1)  My reference to 'core' members was not a slam.  I was refering to a group of people that I perceive as members who are the dynamic -  that generate the most discussion and debate in the areas I frequent here (off topics & other artists).  I don't think I painted them in a bad light, just made the mention to explain my feelings of being an outsider because I'm not remotely in that group.  Believe it or not, but imo alot of the core members are not Bonabuddies.  This is one great music forum to honor the best living blues guitarist and I consider myself fortunate to have been a member.  Yes Brack, I left this site in the past year for three months and came back.  I may do it yet again, but my reasons for leaving this time have more to do with priorities than any frustration.
(2)  The word nostalgia carries alot of meaning the older one gets.  A large percentage of forum members are baby boomers and that means that they've been there, done that with the rise of modern music.  The fact that it's discussed a great deal is great, but I guess I'm the odd egg in that I prefer what's being recorded recently.  I went through the nineties and early oughts listening to one greatest hits album after another until I'd had enough.  I actually thought music was dead.  In 2006 I bought John Mayer's trio album that somehow led to Joe Bonamassa, to Aynsley Lister, David Gogo, Derek Trucks, etc. and it was off to the races.  In the succeeding four years I've added nearly ten thousand songs to my music library and the majority of it is current releases.  I respect the music of my youth, but rarely listen to it anymore.  If you asked me when the greatest music was produced I'd quickly say between 1965 and 1975.  If you asked me though what music I listen to I'd say music of the last four years.
(3)  Why did I make public my leaving here?  Well... I guess I have to do it that way to actually do what I'm saying.  Call it melodramatic and you'd probably be right.  That's me.  In these past four years I've visited some dark places and have sought help to overcome serious depression.  On both this forum and Aynsley's I have lost control of my temper as I was losing control of my life.  I deeply regret this and hope the ones I offended forgive me.  Thanks to medicine and therapy I'm today doing well.  The one thing during my journey that literally saved me was my music and the passion I've always had for it.

In closing I'll say I'm leaving the door open here.  There truly are some wonderful people here, Joe included, that I consider friends.  Sorry for unloading, but I felt I had to explain my intentions better.

Scott
