Topic: Speaker question

Hey everyone,

I am thinking of doing some mods to my Vox ac15cc1.  Besides doing the standard tube change, I want to change the speaker as well.  My goal, which I don't know if it is possible, is to increase the clean headroom while attaining a warmer sound.  I am looking at several different sets of tubes.  I plan on clipping the Bright cap.  But the main question for this post is what speaker that can fit in the Vox and create a warmer tone.

I play my LP RI58 99% of the time with the Burstbucker 1 and 2 pups, although I am thinking of putting in 57 Classic and Classic plus in it.  I play classic rock, blues rock, and I am also getting into playing smooth jazz.

So with all of you with a TON more experience than I, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this subject...can it be done?...what speaker would you recommend?...etc..

Thinking about doing these mods instead of buying a new amp.  However I do want to try out the new Fender Supersonic 22 watt amp....but that is another story for another day...unless you tried it...lol

Thanks for the help,

Barry

Re: Speaker question

Your Traditional has '57 classics in it, doesn't it? You prefer the sound of those over the BB's? I was considering doing that in my R7 to tame the pups a bit...

Gits: '03 Gibson Historic R7 Goldtop, '06 Gibson R8 Plaintop, MIJ '62 RI Strat,  and others...
Amps: '99 Marshall 1987x Plexi RI, 1969 Fender Super Reverb

Yes, the Traditional has the '57 classics in it.  When comparing the sets that are in my 2 Les Pauls, the '57 classics have a higher output but are also smoother/creamier than the BB's.  But that is totally my opinion with my gear.  Now that doesn't mean if I switch the pups that '57's are gonna sound better in the RI58.  But the only way to find out is to do the switch.  Just haven't gotten up the nerve to do it yet.

Re: Speaker question

Great amp the little VOX, my freiend modded one with a Celestion G10 Greenback.

Sounded huge,

this is what the Celestion website says:

The 10" that thinks it's a 12". This speaker was developed to recapture the legendary sound of Celestion's 1970s 10s - a 10" speaker with a surprisingly meaty tone.

Low in output but with the weighty low-end balance of a 12", the G10 Greenback features a complex, creamy mid-range and smooth, vintage top-end.

In small combos this speaker adds real class, and when combined in a 4x10 gives rise to a raunchy, full-bodied tone, rich in low-end thump.

"The new Celestion 10" Greenback is hands down the best 10 I've ever heard."
