Well both amps require different ohm ratings so I don't think that would work, would it? I believe the HRD sends 8 ohms and the Class 5 16 ohms.

I actually run the class 5 into a HRD extension cab with the stock speaker which is 8 ohm. The class 5 seems to handle it no problem. You could change the speaker in the HRD so that you are driving 8 ohm from the HRD into 16 ohm if it makes you feel more comfortable.

Technically it is always better to mismatch high than low. 8 into 16 is fine. 16 into 8 not so hot.

Well, I've found my solution. For now anyway.

After changing the stock POS speaker in the HRD with a Vintage 30, the sound was already better. For the Marshall-esque tone I was looking for, I borrowed a Marshall Guv'nor GV-2 pedal from one of my bandmates. Suffice it to say he's not getting it back (he has one of my MXR Micro Amps anyway, so I don't feel too bad). Side by side with the Class 5 I actually preferred the pedal. It does the Marshall sound extremely well. Problem solved.... for now. That GAS is a sonuvabitch sometimes....

Happy times! Glad you sorted something out. I remember seeing a review on pro guitar shop of a cranked marshall versus a fender with marshall style pedal in front. The guy said the fender with the pedal sounded like the marshall in his head.

I'm in love with my Zvex 'Distortron', sounds like a box of rock but with more gain. Wonderful. Try a Wampler Plexi Drive as well. Great pedals in the Marshall ballpark.

I too play Fender amps (currently a Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue) and I've found the Jetter Gain Stage Purple to be a great pedal for Fender amps to cop that Plexi-tone.  Barber Burn Unit EQ or Direct Drive Super Sport is also worth a look.  As Joe has echoed in previous interviews and posts, it really comes down to getting the mids right, especially with Fender amps that can be somewhat lacking in that department.  The Jetter gear seems to have a really sweet mid-voiced range and Barber's stuff (especially the two I mentioned) have internal trim pots that allow you to really tweak the EQ.  Try them and you won't be disappointed, even if it doesn't get you the tone that is in your head.
