Topic: First Beatle Experience

We've had the tix since the day they went on sale a couple months ago, but it didn't really hit me till I got up this morning. I'm finally gonna see at least one of the Fab Four, Sir Paul, in about 4 hours from now. He's playing in SF @ AT&T Park and the ballpark will be ROCKIN" tonight......more shall be revealed, stay tuned Beatlemaniacs. Feel free to share any Beatle experiences you guys have had from any decade. I'm hopin' to hear at least a handful of women screaming a la the '60s.

Re: First Beatle Experience

Now that was a ROCK SHOW!!! 2 1/2 hours of hit songs (with 2 encores) some with a bit of a make over, all for the better and worth every penny. Incredibly tight band backing Sir Paul and heavy on the pyrotechnics on Live & Let Die. Damn, I hope I can do anything other than sleep for 2 1/2 hrs. when I'm 68!

Re: First Beatle Experience

Very first exposure was listening to Radio Luxembourg on 208m medium wave (funny how that sticks after all these years) in bed at night, under the covers with my little transistor radio, just as they 'happened' in 62-63.

I actually 'saw' (a relative term) them play live at the old D.C stadium before it became the RFK in August '66. They were ant-like figures a mile away from where I sat, but I can still claim to have 'seen' them perform (once).  wink

RIP Iron Man

Re: First Beatle Experience

I still remember seeing these guys on the Ed Sullivan show on the black and white tv the first time they appeared in America.  I think I was eight.  Never was lucky enough to see them live - way too young (my best friend saw them though - lucky girl).  My whole room was plastered with pictures from magazines (I think I still have a scrapbook somewhere), and I still have my much used (and abused) vinyl, including a lot of 45's.  Funny thing is the only CD's I have are Rubber Soul and Revolver - but was actually contemplating the White Album just yesterday.  I think I have a bootleg version of that somewheres  smile  .

That was us last night G Dawg, 3rd deck stadium seats, thank God for giant video screens. Paul mentioned the final tour in '66 and how they couldn't hear themselves play, but he said nowadays we have very loud thingys. For a stadium show the sound was superb, I've been to indoor gigs in acoustically correct venues that didn't sound that good. He got a good laugh out of the crowd when he admitted, we change guitars quite a bit because we have lots of nice ones and we love showing them off. I never knew till last night that Blackbird was written as his feelings on racial unrest in the US south in the '60s, you learn something new everyday. Finally saw a Beatle, another check off on the "bucket list".

Same for me too Sandy, the Ed Sullivan Show changed my whole outlook on music one night. Was it really 47 years ago????? If you can find the "White" album be prepared for sticker shock, it's usually $25-$35 unless you go used Amazon.

Re: First Beatle Experience

I just had MY first Beatle experience a couple weeks ago too... Ringo Starr, at Bethel Woods.  Good seats too... 10th row center.  It was an unexpected invite from my taper friend, when his buddy couldn't make it.  I hadn't looked into Ringo's All Starr Band beforehand... currently Edgar Winter, Rick Derringer, Gary Wright, Richard Page, Wally Palmer and Gregg Bissonette... so that was like an unexpected bonus for me.  The band sounded GREAT, I had a real good time.  If anyone is interested, here's the recording, and there are still currently 37 seeders... of course you need a Dime account, or a friend with one... I don't think he uploaded it anywhere else...

Re: First Beatle Experience

This is where I slide quietly in and admit, that being a scouser I didn't see them at the Cavern, but a year or so after they became "famous". They did a tour of the Uk and played the Odeon cinema in Southport, about 25 miles North of Liverpool. I went with a mate. To be honest we couldn't hear a thing for girls screaming at the top of their voices. That wasn't the only thing, they had to clean and disinfect the theatre seats after the show I'm told?????? Far from enjoyable, they just had little amps on stage, no PA, they didn't stand a chance.

As an aside, I had it pointed out to me the other day that my first evergig to see Sonny Boy Williamson at the Cavern in 1964 wasn't the only first I had that night. I hadn't realised that he was backed by none other than the Yardbirds with a 19 year old EC on guitar - Well how the hell was I to know!!!!!????

Re: First Beatle Experience

Never seen the fab four live but remember vividly going to Bournemouth to see the screening of Hard Day's Night with my mum and a cousin.  Dunno why they invited me as I must have only been about 6 but I remember seeing the queues of girls snaking outside the cinema and up a side passage, and all through the film the screaming was SO loud you couldn't hear the film.  For some reason I remember thinking that I should scream too, even though at that age of course I didn't realise why the other girls were doing it!

Re: First Beatle Experience

Ed Sullivan show was my first Beatles experience which led to my first ever album purchase Something New the Beatles. It was an American release that included I want to Hold Your Hand sung in German. I was probably in 3rd grade.

I wonder how many 3rd graders today are buying something classic.

Re: First Beatle Experience

I'm sure I'm like most people my age, I heard them on the radio. But I really didn't get into them until college. That's when I finally "got it."

Me too, Deezer. For me, it was a birthday present of a transister radio in 1970, listening to Canadian station CKLW from my home across the St. Clair River in a suburb of Detroit, when one of the songs getting a lot of airplay was "Paperback Writer." (Another one was "Cracklin' Rosie" by Neil Diamond, I recall.)

I had the red and blue albums in High School, and a bunch of us went to Beatlemania when it toured in 1979. There were tears all around when the marquis sign stopped at the end of the show with the headline "BEATLES BREAK UP."

Never saw any of them live, though. But you never know. It could still happen.
