Topic: Times have changed!

(In a good way of course)...

Why I say this is I'm posting from my Blackberry using the Bolt browser. Surprisingly, it's pretty fast and easy to use! Better not tell Roy! smile

Anyone else browse using their phone?

no i don't. i like my tiny phone too much and the damn monthly bills are so $$$. i am considering ditching the land line and dsl though for a wireless internet plan. i am trying to figure out if the 5 gb/month will be sufficient for what we use at home which includes alot of x-box live. do you know how i can find out how much being on x-box live uses?

Hard core XBox will suck up 50 to 100 MB/hour Jane. Toss them in the trash and tell the kids to get a life.  tongue

You're going to need a lot more than 5GB / month. Especially if you download a lot of stuff.

Re: Times have changed!

Just a thought Jane. I have a Sprint wireless usb modem for my laptop when on the road and around town for work since hotspots are too random. Cost about 100 to buy, about 50/month for airtime, roams everywhere and connects at about 250kb/s up and 450 down. Unlimited useage. Faster than my home cable modem in fact.

Re: Times have changed!

Without the xbox you would be good with the lower plan. Speed is dependant on how close you are to the antenna site and how many are using at once. If you decide to get one, try and do a site test at home to make sure you have good coverage there before purchase. Test it in the evening when everyone else locally is online and do some ping speed tests to see how good it really will be. Some rooms will work better that others just like a cell phone. It all depends on coverage. I kept my landline phone for emergencies on the cheapest basic plan. 911 calls do not work over wireless if you want them to know where the call is coming from. It may be different there but that is the deal here.

No problem Jane...

There are many different options when it comes to phone lines. You could just pay for internet and get a service like Skype or Google Voice. There are also many different alternatives for internet too.

I typically browse on my iPhone on the train ride home from work (like now). A bit slow, but not too bad. I'll be looking at that new 4G phone when it comes out at the end of this month...should speed things up a bit.

4G should be great, but it's probably going to take sometime for it to be rolled out and what not.

3G isn't too bad on my Blackberry, it's bearable.

I now browse on the iPad.  Perfect for me.  My esoteric plans for the Crossroads Guitar Festival fell through, which were to involve written live reporting to the forum from myself and others, uploading others' photos and videos, etc. I had a perfect pre-show introductory message all written and my finger was moving towards the "Submit Topic" button when kaboom, the iPad shut down due to temperature. I retyped from memory when it had cooled, as best I could recall, under forced shade, and once again, kaboom just as the finger reached.  Mind you this is before 10:30 a.m. that day, so that's an indication of how hot and nasty the day was.  I DID solve the problem but then the site was down ONCE AGAIN!  roll

Re: Times have changed!

Not sure what your set up is over there in the US. Here in the UK we have many broadband providers, all cutting each others throats for business. The package I have from BT (British Telecom) gives me a line into the home for land line calls or Fax, plus a permanent broadband line with unlimited download and about 10 - 15meg download speed at off peak times. I have a landline as well, so I guess I'm pretty well connected. It seems the router they supply is designed to piggy back unsecured wireless to the immediate local community as well as my secure service, so you could say, my particepation is helping spread the availability of free wireless in our community. I pay about £23 per month all in!

Oh yeah Bill....well, here's a bit of advanced technology for you. A couple of weeks ago I switched from Time Warner Cable to AT&T U-Verse for both my broadband and television services. I must say the U-Verse TV is quite nice. smile However, the technician that came out bragged about is IT education but complained about his pay. It seems with his two years at AT& T he felt he should be making more. Of course, since I have 35 years with the company, his complaints fell on rather deaf ears. Anyway, he really didn't do a very good job tucking away cables that he ran for the TV sets and PC's in our home, I have since tidied them up. He even left us missing one remote for my daughter's PC. But to make matters worse, he somehow managed to cut our air conditioning power wire that went out to the outside unit. This was not discovered until we returned from a fishing trip to northern Wisconsin this past Saturday. Temperatures have been near 90 everyday with high humidity, so needless to say I was not too pleased to find out about the cut wire when my furnace man showed up yesterday. Resulting bill was $150 which I'll need to bring up with AT&T.

In summation, this world can have all the advance networks, routers, devices, hand held communication devices it wants, but ultimately it is humans that develop, program and make them run. THAT is where the true "glitch" comes into play. wink

By the way, I am tweeting now but for the life of me, I'm not sure why. lol
