Topic: Black Keys

Discovered this Duo when I was in HMV in Manchester getting my tickets for Joe at the Apollo. Hooked into them on the store PA whilst I was browsing, just had to buy the Album they were playing - Brothers. Played it in the car all the way home - absolutely STONKING album!

I think they're lousy...a bassman would make them acceptable.  Ballocks...

I"m with BJJ. I do think their new album has a bass player and the song I heard from it was pretty good.

Re: Black Keys

BigJeffJones...

have you seen them live..??
you don't miss the lack of a bass player in that setting...

I don't even bat an eyelid (or an ear really..!) when the White Stripes are on the radio etc since I bought "Rubber Factory" by The Black Keys...

If anyone needs convinced.. check out "10AM Automatic" and "Stack Shot Billy" from that album...

great modern blues music as far as i'm concerned...

but as always.. this is just my opinion...

Bull...they're superb.

BJJ would give R.Johnson a bass player...  roll   big_smile

Not bad for a couple of Buckeyes...... from Akron, Ohio to be exact. The same neck of the woods that hatched Chrissy Hynde & Devo, oh yeah and Dr. Bob too. Grant me some serenity.

I'll tell you what I said on facebook....they haven't found Big Jeff yet. That's why they don't have a bass player.  lol

Re: Black Keys

The Keys are great..... seen "em 2x....The last show in pdx was taped for a live dvd that you can get at your local video outlet.....This is a great duo....Patrick Carney is an outstanding and interesting drummer and Dan Auerbach is a real talent and a very cool dude....my buddy saw them at a spontaneous event in L.A. and at the end of the set he put Dan on the phone with me a thousand miles away and I'm talkin' to the guy...pretty hilarious. Not particularly fast, but a very interesting riffer.... a little like Jack White.....I totally recommend all their cd's and their live show.

Re: Black Keys

Love the Black Keys, I think Dan Auerbach is an outstanding songwriter, and theres been alot of growth in each of their records. What they are doing now isn't quite as raw as their earlier albums but I'd rather see a band grow and change than release the same record over and over. Also check out Dan Auerbach's solo record, I like it just as much, if not more, than the Black Keys stuff, some brilliant songs.

Re: Black Keys

Geoff, I'm glad you reposted this story. I remember back in 2003 (long before I'd heard of Joe) I was heading down a blues exploration, and I was in my local record store Fopp when I suggently heard this superb music. Soulful bluesy vocals, dirty slide guitar and powerful drums I did not know what it was and when I was told I bought Thickfreakness which was the band's second album (along with a Howlin' Wolf CD). I saw them in a small club a few months later, and several times since each time in a larger venue. Despite being only two they have a really rich sound and they do a superb job of taking the blues styles of the south and combining with indie rock to get a sound of their own. I got the new album at the weekend and I agree, it's a cracker!

This looks like a great year for the band, with two UK visits, some larg outdoor shows and their largest venue tour so far in October.

That 6th July date looks like a cert - got to go see 'em, that album simply smacks you between the eyes. OK they do have some other instruments on there, but I bet their live act adapts well. BJJ is just flexing really. We know he's a big cuddly ***%# cat really - We love ya Jeff!

Yeah, I'm flexing...a little.  big_smile   But Deezer is right!  and their music is not too bad.  That boy can sing as well.

Editz:  Have to add that in conversation recently with some younger cats, after voicing the same sentiments as above, one of them actually said "You would never say that to their face."  Their guitar teacher who is a lunatic friend of mine, choked on his gum, blew his cola through his nose and sputtered:

"Just shut up man.  You're embarassing me.  You haven't lived long enough!"

Re: Black Keys

I like their minimalistic playing: especially " The big Come Up" is like an introduction to the basic riffs in bluesrock.
