Ive had a DSL401 for over a year now and have finally found "that" tone . I discovered if you completed the fx loop with a pedal or even a patch cable and then turn fx level to 10 the amp gets "hot rodded" . The volume of OD1 & 2 increases , much more bass response , more bite and gain . The clean isnt affected much however .
I recently tried the clean channel with gain on 5 , master then adjusted for volume and boosted with an SD-1 and it sounds sooo much better than the OD channels . It has a nice big bass response but not too much , it just sounds great.
I also tried out a vintage modern combo a few weeks ago and was not impressed at all. Fizzy tone , too much bass and the sound got all fuzzy , didnt like it at all , but maybe thats just me ?
Anyway go for the DSL401 , got mine re-valved last week and it sounds KILLER!
If you do get a DSL401 and go 2nd hand buy one after 2003 , the earlier ones from 97-03 had problems with the output valve holes being too small and only JJ's will fit , like mine
