Topic: best amp for les paul?

i know that people like to use strats with fender twin's

is there a similar match for the les paul? is it the marshall or does it matter?

Re: best amp for les paul?

One of the old Orange ORs...hear me roar.

Re: best amp for les paul?

Any amp really! A Les Paul into a Fender Super Reverb or Twin will get you closer to a Peter Green or Mike Bloomfield type tone.  With older Marshalls you are in Jimmy Page and Clapton territory.  Dumble type amps bring you that revered Larry Carlton/Robben Ford sound.  Modern high gain amps for the Gary Moore, Slash, Zakk Wylde stuff.  It all depends on what you are going for.

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

Re: best amp for les paul?

in my experience... whatever amp is turned "on"
I've gotten them to sound good through everything.
Mine has sounded best though a Sovtek MIG50, JCM 800, Rivera 100 knucklehead, Peavey 5150
I didn't like them through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, VOX Valvetronix, or Mesa Triple-rectum-hinder

Ask me about my handwound Great Lakes Guitar Pickups
Since 2010, Bonamassa fans have taken advantage of my JB friend discount = my cost + shipping. cool

I don't think Gary Moore or Warren Haynes will argue much with you about that.  God GM was absolutely searing on that cut!

"Everybody's entitled to my opinion. wink

Re: best amp for les paul?

IMHO The best amp to use with a les paul is....................................

Whatever your've got, or whatever you can afford! There's no point me dreaming of a JB Rig for 2 reasons:

1. I can't afford it.
2. Even if I could, it wouldn't sound the same as JB, as said before many times most of the tone is in the fingers.

Therefore I will continue using an empty coke can with a piece of string and enjoy the sound I get from my 2 finger picking technique, not so much Django more "Seasick Steve" but with very little talent.

Whatever you've got, enjoy it, in our head we can all be as good as anyone we want to be, live for the moment! Dreams are good. cool  cool

Have Fun and laugh like it's your first time! You never know you might get to like it! big_smile

Warren Haynes uses a modified Soldano SLO-100. Not sure about Gary Moore.

Re: best amp for les paul?

Gary Moore also used an SLO 100 in late '80s to '90s.  The "Still Got the Blues" era rig was the SLO100, a Bluesbreaker combo, and what looked like a Silverface Fender Dual Showman for cleans.  I use to have that old VHS of GM and BB King.  What a killer live video!

Re: best amp for les paul?

I use a '78 JMP 800 50 watt 2 X 12 combo ( Mullard 12ax7's in pre-amp) with my Epi Gold Top LP

and  SD Antiquity Pups, Mids up, Treble at 5 (I had a treble cut installed) , Presence 1 or 2,

and Bass at 5, and a Zen Drive2 with a Old Mullard 12ax7.  Love the Blues and Rock n Roll!

Sounds Good to me!!!

Cheers

Re: best amp for les paul?

Man it's got to be a Marshall. Soldanos are awesome but I do believe the SLO100 is inspired by a 100 watt Marshall.

When I see a Les Paul I see a Marshall behind it.
When I see a Strat I think a Fender Super Reverb
When I see a Tele I think a fender Tweed era amp.

The above go together like Salt and Vinigar, and Rubharb and Custard.

Guitars: 95 Les Paul Standard, Relic Strat,
Amps: 1973 Marshall JMP 50 head and Vintage Modern Cab. I use no effects other than a Cry Baby on occasions.
