Topic: Marshall Question

You guys are the Marshall experts.  I'm doing a one off gig coming up...just dropping in doing a quick set and out.  Backline is provided.  I can choose between a (here's what they said)  a Marshall 900, a Marshall 2000 or a Twin.  I don't anything about the various Marshall models but I'm curious to try one.

My current touring rig is a Fuchs ODS.  I'm leaning toward the Twin and a Zen or a Pearl Drive but I'm not a Twin fan either.  Don't mind Deluxes or Hot Rods but they're not an option...

What would you recommend to get a nice medium gain sound.  Think joe B.  I have a modded tube screamer I could put out front...talk to me.

Re: Marshall Question

If you're looking for a 'think Joe B' sound  lol I would certanly go for the JCM 2000. I believe theyre what Joe uses on his fly-in gigs, and they certainly prove a worthy replacement for his usual rig. I've done a few jam-nights when guys have supplied them, which is one the reasons I bought a 2000 DSL combo... Theyre VERY reliable amps, and sound great,
That's just my recommendation, but I do love 'em  big_smile

the 900's are crap. and they don't have so much gain as the 2000's.

but if i had to choose.. i would choose the JCM 800.  smile

Re: Marshall Question

I would also choose an JCM 800 but that does not appear to be one of the options. Go with the 2000. Definitely better than the 900.

Re: Marshall Question

Thanks.  I'm not looking for a particularly hi gain sound.  Ok, so, if I request the 2000 what settings would you recommend.  I'm probably going to get 5 minutes to dial in sound before we hit.  It's a large ampitheater...probably 10,000 folks...I gotta sound good...talent aside smile

Re: Marshall Question

There are some Great JCM 900's out there but since you don't know which model it is and you don't want an experiment on your hands go with the 2000 it has a nice Clean and a really nice OD with lots of gain if you need it. Should be easier to dial in than the 900 as well. The 2000 are very versital amps and an all tube signal, the 900 has diodes to make the OD not that that is a bad thing because the Jubilee does to.

Re: Marshall Question

Leave the presence and treble settings pretty low, and dial the mids and bass just above 7. Adjust gain and volume to taste.

Re: Marshall Question

A 900 is just an 800 with channel switching (and sometimes) reverb.
Are you doing a lot of clean? Did you say Fender Twin? You might wanna go with the twin. They can fill a room nicely, and have a BIG clean sound...especially if you have good Marshally pedals, it could be a good bet.
2000's will have a lot of gain, and the 900 will do just fine depending on how heavy you wanna get.

Re: Marshall Question

Like I said.  I'm not in a heavy band.  Don't need tons of gain.  My usual amp is a Fuchs ODS which is why the Twin and a Zen Drive or a Pearl Drive would get me close.  I usually never use the clean channel since the Fuchs cleans up nicely with rolling back the guitar volume.  For an extra boost during solos I might kick in a pedal of some type but mostly it's just guitar, Fuchs and some verb and/or delay.

I havent used a Marshall in years and love the way they sound so I'm looking to shake things up a bit and step out of my 6L6 comfort zone.  I'll be at a large outdoor ampitheater with about 10,000 people.

Sounds like the 2000 might be the way to go.

Re: Marshall Question

The JCM2000 is totally the way to go being that Joe himself uses them when he doesn't have his main rig.  I suggest the green channel with the boost engaged, try both volumes at least 6 especially if you are playing outdoors.  Eq settings may vary depending on guitars but this works for me...

presense 0-2
treble 0-2
(can you tell I'm not a fan of bright tones lol)
mids 6-8
bass -noon
volume -as loud as you can take it
gain 6-7
mid shift out (more mids setting)
gain boost engaged

A little reverb and delay doesn't hurt.  The reverb on the amp is actually pretty good.  Tubescreamer settings per personal preference but I like the volume about 10 oclock, tone 9 oclock, and gain either noon-2 oclock.  Just a slight boost in the mids and gain.  Also a chorus in the loop can help further thicken the tone for that big vocal JB like tone.

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

Re: Marshall Question

Thanks.  This may sound silly but what is the Green Channel?
I'll definately post next week after the gig and let you know how it sounded.

Ill be running a delay in the loop.  Is there any setting for the effect loop?  I know my Fuchs has send and return trims as well as series/parallel select.

Re: Marshall Question

First thing there are 2 Different JCM 2000 A DSL - with 2 channels, and a TSL with 3 Channels- I believe the Green channel is the Crunch/Clean channel and the Red Channel is the high gain channel. I think the TSL also has an Orange channel I don't remember. I am sure Stratpaulguy can help you out a little more, I don't own either amp but have used them both. Both sound great some people like the DSL better. I think the boost button makes the green channel Crunchy and with it out its clean.

Re: Marshall Question

By the way Danny G where in Pittsburgh are you from I am orginaly there lived there for 24 years before I moved out to AZ I used to work at WDVE Radio and saw a hell of a lot of bands on the South Side, espically Nicks Fat City which I heard is now a dance club or something. "A 900 is just an 800 with channel switching (and sometimes) reverb"

Sorry, not buying that one, except for the reverb.  800s own 900s,especially early '81-83, reissue 800s?...eh not impressed.  JCM2000 will be more versatile with pretty good tone, the 900 will be a crap shoot.  The ones I have heard have been all over the map tonally.

Where the hell does one get a black-backed gold top anyway?

Re: Marshall Question

Danny G,

I know you dont care for twins, but you have some great pedals which I can promise will sound great thru the twin.  It is going to give you a much smoother tone than any marshall will give you. I am guessing that you will get a much harsher tone thru the marshall than the Fender.

Also those pedals you have are really meant to be played thru a clean amp.  The pearl and the Zen drive are going to shine thru a super clean platform such as the Twin.  And your right the Fuchs is based loosely on the fender design rather than the marshall.

I would go with the fender clean and loud and you shouldnt have to worry too much about the settings.  I'd have the treble around 6 the mids around 5 and the bass around 7.  The volume around 3-4 or so you can hear it.  then dial in you pedals to taste.  It should work fine.

Good luck and let us know what you choose and how it worked.
