good one Brack. check out that semi-afro he's sporting from '91, almost looks like wild animal hair. I can also recommend Joni Mitchell's 'Shadows and Light', recorded live with an allstar band including Pat and Jaco Pastorius. Her phrasing, bizarre tunings, and strange chord progressions make this a natural fit for these two guys.

Re: Jazz Players

I think the topic is more about jazz GUITAR players. Not mentioned yet is James Blood Ulmer, a guy with deep roots in blues. I appreciate him very much, especially his Bad Blood in the City album.

thanks Brack, good listen. I think the point is that she put together a really fine group of jazz musicians, including Pat Metheny, Jaco, Lyle Mays on keboards (had already played with Pat and others), and Michael Brecker on sax. She just had them playing her songs, many of which are very much jazz influenced. Surely there is something here that Russ can learn from, imho.

Robben's been all over the Jazz map for the past 40 years playing with Joni Mitchell on Hissing of Summer Lawns & Miles of Aisles,The LA Express w/ Tom Scott, The Yellowjackets(which he helped form), Miles Davis, and his own Fusion band Jing Chi.

Re: Jazz Players

Thanks for all the names guys! Really enjoying these players, some I'd never even heard of, and was completely blown away! I'm particularly likin' Chris Cain, Dayrl Stuermer, James Blood Ulmer (what a player!), Joe Pass, Larry Carlton, Larry Coryell, Mike Stern, Pat Metheny and Robeen Ford... There were other names you all gave me, and I'm really enjoying them all, but those guys are the ones I'm especially enjoying. Chris Cain is a superb player! I can't believe I'd never heard of him  yikes
Thank you so much guys  big_smile  I've certainly got more to learn from now  yikes  It's a whole new world of guitar to me! Haha, love it.
Cheers again,
Your grateful jazz-fan,
Rus

Dawg, at one time I said I had never seen Robben in concert. Turns out that he was the guitarist with Tom Scott and LAX when they went on tour with Joni, '73 or '74 I think. They played a packed Coleman Coliseum at Univ of AL. I did not know who he was at that time. I remember they also featured Max Bennet on bass, he was damn good. That 'Miles of Aisles' may have been taken from that tour, but I never bought it. Add another one to the list.

When I saw Robben last fall, the house was packed with players, both guitar and bass (to watch young Carleton), who had come to watch and learn. Most impressive. He holds master classes frequently in California.

Curby, if you give a nod to Rodrigo & Gabriela we gotta give Ottmar Liebert some cred, after all he's been doin' that style since those two were in diapers. You could argue that Ottmar, Craig Chaquico, & Rod. & Gab. fall under "New Age" though, still dig all 3 of 'em.

Gary:  All I have of Al's is basically Elegant Gypsy and I never thought of it as a rock album.  I'm going to investigate though and get back with you.

JDawg:  I wasn't familiar with Ottmar Liebert, but checked out his music and like some of it.  New Age, Jazz, Flamenco, fusion......who cares if it's good.  Living within labels tend to limit the experience imo.
