Topic: Chantel McGregor - Paul Jones Show, Session

Chantel McGregor has recorded a session for the Paul Jones show on BBC Radio 2.

Chantel's session will be broadcast on Monday 17th May. The show starts at 7pm.

After having the privilege of seeing Chantel four times in the last two weeks, and been completely blown away every time, I'm really looking forward to tuning in for this. It's great news that Chantel has the opportunity to showcase her talent as a brilliant young guitarist on national radio. And on such a prestigous show.

Re: Chantel McGregor - Paul Jones Show, Session

A special performance from Chantel on Monday night's session.  Four songs were recorded at the session, but due to time restrictions, only three of them were played on the show.

First up was I'm No Good For You , one of Chantel's own songs, which she plays solo without her band. It's one of the best of a strong set of her own songs. This was followed by Sonny Boy Williamson's Help Me. Love the guitar/bass intro to this, and some very classy soloing from Chantel. The final song was Robin Trower's Daydream, one of Chantel's epics, this version clocking in at just over 11 minutes. This featured an extended, searing lead break, with Chantel hitting the sweet spot time and again. Beautifully sung as well.

The session is available to listen to again on the BBC iPlayer. It will be available until next Monday. Below is a link, direct to the Paul Jones page with the iPlayer. On the timing bar, at the bottom of the iPlayer, scroll across to the times below to jump straight to the track.

Daydream 44.30

The missing song from the session is Not Here With Me. It's another of Chantel's own songs, an acoustic ballad which she plays solo. It's available to listen to as a bonus track on the same page. There's some good photographs of the session up there as well. For Chantel's own thoughts on the session, go to her blog at her website, www.chantelmcgregor.com. Not sure I've used this acronym here before, but OMG!  Thanks for the link - Chantel sounds great, both vocally and guitar playing.  Look out world this young women will be very big.  Where can I get a hard copy of these three songs?  Don't let me down.
Oh yeah, I also liked Chris Farlowe's "Tell Me Mama".  Good stuff!

Hi Curby

No idea whether a hard copy of this will ever be available, but it would make some great bonus material for a future CD release. In the meantime, this has just appeared on You Tube.

This is Chantel and the band performing Help Me from the session.

It's audio only, and a selection of excellent photographs from the session. Good to know that this will not expire next Monday. Maybe I'm No Good For You and Daydream will find their way on there as well.

Re: Chantel McGregor - Paul Jones Show, Session

I'm ashamed to say I wasn't familiar with Chantel's playing until I heard Paul Jones' show and, like Curby, my gob was well and truly smacked. Chantel's playing is amazing and she must have left everyone trailing in her wake at Uni. No wonder she got a first. If you missed this show, I'd recommend you listen now as it won't be available for long.

Looks like I'll have to take up one of Chantel's invitations that she keeps sending me on facebook.  big_smile  If only her date at the 100 Club didn't clash with the New Gen Tour at Jazz Cafe.  mad

Re: Chantel McGregor - Paul Jones Show, Session

I'd like to say many thanks to everyone who has contacted me, it's really appreciated.

Recording at Maida Vale is special, it's one of those places with an atmosphere, an aura of all the great artistes who have recorded there over the years, a privilege and a humbling experience for a Yorkshire lass. I'd also like to thank Paul and everyone at the show, it may have only been one day, but the memory will stay with me for a lifetime, thanks.

Love,
Chantel

Well done Chantel! smile It was a great set and it's really got me keen to hear a recording I can keep! smile
If you've not heard this session yet, you've seen the link above.

By the way I think Blues Matters have an interview with Chantel in the next edition (also Henrik Frieschalder!) smile

Re: Chantel McGregor - Paul Jones Show, Session

Re-run of the session - Monday September 20th.

There will be another re-run of Chantel's session broadcast on the Paul Jones Show on Monday September 20th. Once again, BBC Radio Two between 7 - 8pm. A good time to give this another blast, as its been a massively successful time for Chantel on the road in 2010. And she has a heavy touring schedule for the remainder of the year  smile .
