I have to totally pull for the Chicago Black Hawks.  Been a fan for a long time, although the New York Rangers Rangers are still my perennial favorite NHL hockey team.  Really loved the 1970-1971 Black Hawks, one of my all-time favorite teams, when Tony Esposito was in the net and beyond totally amazing.  ALMOST all the way except for that dang other namesake, brother Henri "The Pocket Rocket" (far younger and much smaller brother of Maurice, "The Rocket"-the original) Richard.  The Pocket Rocket and that darned Ken Dryden, who was a ROOKIE and had played all of a handful of games up until the playoffs, where Montreal decided that star goalie Rogie Vachon was a little too squeaky & leaky (he had been playing poorly of late despite team wins) and should sit the bench.
Loved Esposito, he and Ed Giacomin were my favorite goaltenders those days, and given that Ken Dryden, Rogie Vachon, Gilles Villemure, Gary Cheevers (that famous Frankenstein mask with it's many stitch marks- cool) , Jaques Plante (unretired, having done so once), Ernie Wakely, Glenn Hall (hockey's version of a notrious stage fright condition, he was sick before every game, another unretired who would retire as fast he had unretired), "Gump" Worsely (near retirement), Bernie Parent (not yet up to his par), a glorious heyday for goalies.
That Black Hawks team had Bobby Hull (a joy to watch) Stan Mikita (wore a helmet when wearing one was an extreme oddity and an object of derision and scoffing) Chico Maki, Pat Stapleton, Dennis Hull, Pit Martin...what a team!

Go Black Hawks!

Montreal waiting a long time??? Puhleeze.  Tut tut, like pulling for the Yankees, Cowboys, Celtics! BAH!  Crunch the Crabs, Flyers.
Got to love the Sharks too.  A team to reckon with, and the best hockey logo, they and the AHL Albany River Rats!

Rocket, you missed a few cogs on that 70-71 team: Bill White, Eric Nesterenko, Jim Pappin, Lou Angotti, and a few others that escape my feeble mind at this moment.

Re: Hockey Fans???

The Sharks are in deep doo-doo now. The life  went out of them & the fans after the first goal last night, very unusual for a game at the "Tank". On to Chitown, hope they can turn it around.

Yeah I actually was going to throw in Pappin and just forgot, but I DO remember all of those guys too, Bill White being one of my favorites also.

Re: Hockey Fans???

Are you kidding me?? The overtime game last night was one of the most exciting hockey games I've ever seen!
Never would have guessed that the Blackhawks would be up 3-0 in this series. I figured this was going to be a 6 or 7 game series...it's not over yet, but I sure hope the Hawks close it out on Sunday.
Go Hawks!!

Re: Hockey Fans???

I'm no sort of hockey fan, but put me down for the Black Hawks too. They were the first team I ever heard about when I was a kid because my father came from Chicago.

They also seem to have a Redskin-like quality (which appeals to me,) as a team desperately trying for decades to recapture the long lost glory of yesteryear. I can dig that.  wink

Re: Hockey Fans???

Chicago is on the edge of it's collective seats...if the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup this city will explode!
And Hammer, you're right...there is definitely a tie to the past glory days, even television commercials are comparing this team to past champs. The stars from the past are enjoying this team's ride as well: http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=529890

cool  Way to go Hawks, a clean sweep!!  cool

Re: Hockey Fans???

That had to be the closest sweep I've ever seen. Definitely 3 games that could have gone either way, the exception being game 2. That said, the Hawks dominated the 3rd period yesterday, holding the Sharks to a measly 3 shots on goal.
Stanley Cup Finals, here we come!

Thanks JDawg. I was 5 the last time the Hawks won the cup and still have bitter memories of them losing games 6 & 7 to Montreal in 1971...after leading game seven 2-0. Hoping to end this 49 year drought.
Nice season for the Sharks but I'm guessing with the talent level they have anything less than a Stanley Cup appearance is a disappointment to San Jose fans.

Re: Hockey Fans???

See you on the ice Brother Bill.   big_smile  If the Flyers should happen to pull this off, would my son be setting himself up by wearing his Flyers John LeClair jersey to Wrigley Field on July 18th when the Phils face the Cubs?  You seem like a longtime fan, but looking from the east coast, did the Chicago fans just re-connect with the Blackhawks in the last couple of years when they started playing better?

Angela, he would be no more set up than my BIL did to his SIL when he took him to the Raiders/Steelers game, the kid had his Steelers shirt on, and the seats were in the PIT! lol

Oh Angela, I don't think you'll have to worry about that, lol....Cinderella may have made it to the ball, but she's about to lose her glass slipper :-D
Seriously, like any city, some of the fans might give some good natured ribbing...but you can never account for the idiots!
BTW, lots of die-hard Hawks fans here, but also lots of bandwagon jumpers. We have room for them all!
