I have to totally pull for the Chicago Black Hawks. Been a fan for a long time, although the New York Rangers Rangers are still my perennial favorite NHL hockey team. Really loved the 1970-1971 Black Hawks, one of my all-time favorite teams, when Tony Esposito was in the net and beyond totally amazing. ALMOST all the way except for that dang other namesake, brother Henri "The Pocket Rocket" (far younger and much smaller brother of Maurice, "The Rocket"-the original) Richard. The Pocket Rocket and that darned Ken Dryden, who was a ROOKIE and had played all of a handful of games up until the playoffs, where Montreal decided that star goalie Rogie Vachon was a little too squeaky & leaky (he had been playing poorly of late despite team wins) and should sit the bench.
Loved Esposito, he and Ed Giacomin were my favorite goaltenders those days, and given that Ken Dryden, Rogie Vachon, Gilles Villemure, Gary Cheevers (that famous Frankenstein mask with it's many stitch marks- ) , Jaques Plante (unretired, having done so once), Ernie Wakely, Glenn Hall (hockey's version of a notrious stage fright condition, he was sick before every game, another unretired who would retire as fast he had unretired), "Gump" Worsely (near retirement), Bernie Parent (not yet up to his par), a glorious heyday for goalies.
That Black Hawks team had Bobby Hull (a joy to watch) Stan Mikita (wore a helmet when wearing one was an extreme oddity and an object of derision and scoffing) Chico Maki, Pat Stapleton, Dennis Hull, Pit Martin...what a team!
Go Black Hawks!
Rock ON & Keep the Faith,
Rocket
Montreal waiting a long time??? Puhleeze. Tut tut, like pulling for the Yankees, Cowboys, Celtics! BAH! Crunch the Crabs, Flyers.
Got to love the Sharks too. A team to reckon with, and the best hockey logo, they and the AHL Albany River Rats!
