Topic: tube screamer boost inline DID NOT WORK!!

After lots of help from the forum guys i had band practice yesterday and i tried  the tube screamer inline instead of the effects loop and i found the tube screamer did not do much at all i had the vol all way up ready for solos and and that did not do anything it made the sound a bit creamy but no boost in volume or tone really ,i was hoping it would of worked but it didnt so i need to know what i have done wrong! plus i find the marshall to be very harsh now i dont use the sceamer as part of the dirty tone i have backed the treble on the marshall to about 3 , at the moment i have the slash tone not the joe tone!!

Re: tube screamer boost inline DID NOT WORK!!

I have the same issue with my Marshall JCM 800 2205. I use the dirty channel only. I turn the master volume up to about 8, the bass around 7, mid around 8, treble around 7, gain around 7, channel volume adjusted for the volume I need. I have tried various pedals in front of the amp (ts9, fulltone fulldrive 2, etc) and none of them seem to give me a volume boost, just change the tone. The only way I have ever been able to get a volume boost is to use a pedal in the effects loop but I don't always like what it does to the tone. I have been trying for years to come up with a better solution and have not come up with it yet.

Re: tube screamer boost inline DID NOT WORK!!

One easy solution is to back off the volume on your guitar, then adjust the settings of your amp accordingly.  Then for solos, just turn the volume up.  Another thing i did is that i set my neck PUP a bit higher so the output is louder, so i play rhythm on the bridge and leads with the neck (Kossoff did that a lot).  A volume pedal, and a clean boost would also work.  A lot of clean boosts give you up to 30 dB in boost, that is HUGE.  If you decide to go clean boost, get one with a tone knob.

Re: tube screamer boost inline DID NOT WORK!!

well i think i wiil use the screamer as part of my dirty sound inline because  the marshall sounds to harsh without it and the screamer rounds the sound better (so the screamer would be my 2nd amp!! sort of)! think i will use a boost for solos! The only true way to get that bonamassa tone is the two amp setup you have a lot more scope and mids and best of all is you have is TWO AMPS TO PLAY WITH blending amps must take your tone to different level!

Re: tube screamer boost inline DID NOT WORK!!

Short answer is this :

you can use you TS inline in front of the amp to OD the input and get more gain from the amp, but if you amp is distorted you won't gain any volume, just more gain ( same problem with a clean boost ), to gain any volume your volume device should be in the loop and you best bet to keep your original tone is to have your volume lowered when the pedal is on and louder when the pedal is off, using the pedal as a "2 preset" master volume.

Re: tube screamer boost inline DID NOT WORK!!

Ok, here is exactly what I do. I have my JCM 800 with effects loop. To give me a volume increase for solos - I run a BOSS Compressor/Sustainer pedal in the effects loop. I turn the pedal on for the boost and adjust the pedal level to get the volume boost I need. The only time this has not worked is when I had the master volume and the channel volume maxed out and the gain nearly maxed out. Of course when everything is maxed there is no way to get louder. I do remember my ears bleeding that night, lol.

Re: tube screamer boost inline DID NOT WORK!!

You could turn it up to 11. cool
Any of you guys ever trying an MXR phase 90 for treble boost just to let your sound cut through a little more?

I actually do adjust the tone knob on the compressor pedal to make it cut through a bit more.

Steve,

If all else fails for what you are trying to do, the Klon Centeur will, IMO, do exactly what you need- ie boost the sound without adding too much dirt. A cream boost for want of a better description.

Awesome pedal as long as you play loud. Not good at boosting amps sunning at low vols.

Not bashing the Klon, but there are more affordable ways to do that without a $600+ price tag.  A couple of tricks for a solo boost can work.  Try a volume pedal in the effects loop of your amp.  Set the volume down for rhythm and when you decide to take a solo just press your foot forward.  Also, I've heard some guys do something similar with an EQ pedal in the effects loop.  If you aren't getting a volume boost from your Tubescreamer, then your amp has already reached it's saturated threshold.  There's no more headroom available so you are essentially adding only distortion at that point.  The TS pedals do have a certain color so if you are looking for something more transparent look elsewhere.  A Fulltone Fat Boost, Fulltone OCD (over 20db of boost in HP mode!!!), Xotic BB Preamp/RC Boost/AC boost (depending on taste), etc. would probably work fine.  Of course a Klon too, and everyone will envy your pedalboard even more lol.

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

Re: tube screamer boost inline DID NOT WORK!!

Thanks for your help guys i decided to have my ts on with the amp as its sounds rather nice and big and creamy at the same time, i have a boost for solos i think thats the way forward  for me until i get the two amp setup sorted. but this is good enough for now, i just bought a les paul standard flametop looks just like the (greeny- gary moore) that joe has i just put some historic parts on it i looks really cool, cant wait till practice on friday!!
