Interesting.... if a little long! I guess, it is the Washington Post!

Sobering MikeB? Yes. Heartbreaking to me. I saw this 3 years ago when it first came out. I almost wept.

I too saw this when it first came out. It renders a stark commentary upon the state of modern social awareness and artistic education. Given the context of location I am not surprised. I have noticed that folk from the northeastern seaboard are much more socially insulated than people out west... Just an observation. One could do a doctoral dissertation in psychology on this. Street buskers here attract quite a bit of attention because they stand out from the horde of panhandlers who are almost universally ignored. We also have no centers of mass transport here to use as a comparison.

I am as confused as you Jane. I have an opposing opinion that people "out west" are far more socially insulated that east coasters. An observation marked by significant living in both areas. Also, a busker here typically plays up to the tourist crowds or the local spots by the emabacadero or in the park by the zoo or better yet museums. Someone will be almost universally ignored on downtown or any city or suburb streets and likely removed by police if at the train station or trolley stops and DEFINITELY removed by police at the airport. I saw people categorically ignoring a wonderful violinist in Piccadilly Circus tube station (very nice reverb from the tiled walls) in London and an even more impressive violinist outside the Salzberg Cathedral in Austria. You get what you play for...

Not very surprising to me at all since it was in our Country. People here are too busy with their own lives to just stop and smell the roses once in a while, which is truly a shame. But think about it, you're on your way to work, how many of us would stop to listen? People here are too busy trying to make the almighty dollar; very sad indeed. What surprised me even more is how many people in the video didn't have a cell phone to their ear as they were walking. I see plenty of that today and wonder to myself, why do people have so much to say now as opposed to just 15-20 years ago?
For myself, even though I have a cell phone, I rarely carry it with me because my time is just that, my time. If those that are important to me need to contact me, they know how to reach me. In addition, I almost never answer the land line at home. Of course, I do have a 18 and 13 year old at home, so who in the world would be calling me anyway, right? I've often said that the world is a very funny place. The reason I say that is, I try to take time to notice things around me and to look for something that makes me laugh or at least smile everyday. I suspect, since I get to work 45 minutes everyday before my start time, I would have stopped to listen to the wonderful music, but that's just me. Hmmmm......how much would have I thrown in the hat? That's for me to know.
