Re: Bad rock bands !!!

Being a huge Jack White fan, I own "It might get loud" and to me it just confirmed that Jack White and Jimmy Page can play geetar, but the edge can work an effect pedal. He is not awful...just relies way too much on tricks...it reminds me of the Flock of Seagulls keyboardist hitting that one note on "I Ran" Hilarious. Imust also say that their live show is impressive, but again that is more about visuals and effects than music...isn't it? I will check out your recommendations...thanks

about U2, but must defend their live performances. I saw them in New Orleans on the Popmart tour, they did rock the house, and to this day it is one of the best concerts I have ever seen. I am prepared to take the heat on this, however I own none of their music. I would like to have Joshua Tree, only for Bullet The Blue Sky. and yes, for the most part Edges guitar work sucks, but not so much on this tune

I would agree with you in that it is so easy to knock the biggest, most successful band but until you have seen first hand what they can do in a stadium gig you cannot judge; they certainly rock! - And The Edge is a much misunderstood guitar god IMHO. Watch the outtakes on the "it might get loud" film to see him jamming with Jimmy Page, - he can rock when he wants.

As for new rock bands, - there are plenty out there you just have to open your mind a bit and be prepared to go looking for them rather than wait... Biffy Clyro, - just go buy their latest album guys, take my word for it. And then rock has come into other streams of music; Pendulum, - have a look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5wlU7RQHAU - tell me that number does not rock and you would not want to be in the mosh pit at 1min10?

Biggest underrated rocker:

Jimmy Barnes (v big in Australia mostly unknown elsewhere). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwIdbN1QW24 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giCmURBT … eature=fvw

Toadies are the most underrated rock act in recent years...they rock, they are talented and they are super nice guys ...met them after their last show in Portland and they were super cool at the post show meet and greet

S'OK.  I'm thinking about going to see Carole King & James Taylor.  That should make for some groans from the crowd.  And I'll really put myself out here on a limb.  Shoot me.  I like The Toadies.  OK, lemme rephrase that.  I REALLY like The Toadies!

Someone on this thread mentioned "Stef Burns" ...that the same one that was in Y&T for a while? Speaking of which...another really underrated California band with maybe the best guitarist on the planet.....hair metal at it's best!

Can you imagine what would happen if they turned off the 'loop' and played "You Upset Me Baby" and "Blues Deluxe"?  People would be fallin' off their chairs.  Wouldn't it be fun... to see them do it the way that old show did it - WKRP in Cincinnati - when they changed their format.  Riiiiiippppppppp wen the needle!    yikes

Good to hear!  I love Sweetness and Backslider.  Interesting video on Backslider, LOL.  OK, I think we've hijacked this thread and morphed it into bands that do rock.  Sorry everyone!

Correct Murfdog, my bud Jimi Dunlop, of guitar pick fame, threw a birthday party for Stef's 50th last year and Y&T played here at the party. Y&T are East Bay boys who still have a strong fan base here in NorCal, but they're still kickin' a$$ and takin' names in Japan. Dave Meniketti.....MONSTER shredder!!!! Good guy too, he plays Tony LaRussa's ARF(Animal Rescue Foundation) benefit show every year either with the band or solo.

Yeah, We have known the band for years...way back to when Leonard Haze was their drummer...knew him pretty well....matter of fact talked to him a few weeks ago. Dave and Phil are also super cool...the last time we got to see them was their fan appreciation shows they do in Petaluma every year We are really looking forward to them coming to Portland this summer...they have a gig scheduled at a small club here....can't wait as it's been about 7 years. Have you heard the new disc? Comes out on the 21st. It rocks!!!

Don't own any Yesterday & Today Murf, not much of a metalhead, but have been exposed to their presence for years being an East Bay homey for 45 years.

Here @ the Murf's pad using his PC to get a ton of stuff done, but have to vent & pimp slightly any and all Y&T. Not only devloping friendships w/ various line ups, crews and managements going back to 83', but like here, a street team member for them, as their cybereserected career has grown over the past decade. Got so many great stories. Best friends w/ Leonard overall, but have left a near lethal impact on others at times. we are gettin' the word out on the 7/16 Portland show. First time since 85'. My Oregon buddy Deen Castronovo's metal band "Wild Dogs" opened....It was Killer

Re: Bad rock bands !!!

Oh yeah, Y & T. I remember them..... I picked up a Cassette ( that's how long it's been ) called, Mean Streek. Y & T get played on, Planet Rock from time to time. Not so bad! IMO   wink

Gotta love it here, one mention of Stef Burns (Joey Alves replacement - whatever happened to Joey?) and we are off on a Y&T rant.

Been listening to Y&T since "STRUCKDOWN" and as J Dawg mentioned they were called Yesterday & Today. Used to go see them about once a month somewhere in the bay area back then, before the release of "EARTHSHAKER" and they started to get popular.

Dave is a Monster player (there was just a small write up on him in Guitarist Mag / Unsung Heros page) but the most fun was to watch Leo get in a trance and bang the drums.

New album at the end of May titled "FACEMELTER". Perfect.

As Archie and Edith used to sing......."Those Were The Days"......I guess they still are.

Re: Bad rock bands !!!

Love the Y&T talk!....I must start a thread when "Facemelter" is released!

Re: Bad rock bands !!!

rpic, Joey left the band not long after Leonard did when they signed w/ Geffen in 86', as they did not want any part of what John Koladner? was trying to do to the band. The road crew also left when Leonard did as well. The loyalty ran deeper than the B.S. Geffen was stereotyping them as and the direction was NOT good. Both played in and produced other bay area bands and Leonard did an album and HUGE tour w/ Ian Gillan 90'-92'. Joey developed a brain tumor, survived surgery and from what I hear through the grapevine...been cancer free for over a decade now. We saw him at the 02'&04' Mystic Theater reunion shows and he was glad to see we made it down from Oregon. Did'nt effect his memory of their trips to Oregon in the 80's and the corruption we instilled.
