Sorry to report our friend, Joanne Shaw Taylor, didn't win "Best New Artist". No shame to her. I'm still amazed they added a Blues/Rocker to the list in the first place. And, it didn't hurt her career. I'm sure she garnered many new fans. Here's a link for the list of winners:

Tommy Castro deservedly garnered a heap of awards and it is nice to see Derek Trucks recognized too.
One of these days we may even see Joe on the list if those stodgy old style Blues folks can open their eyes.

So Cathy - I go to that page and it's blank - are they trying to tell us nobody won?

Joanne's US tour drummer Layla Hall posted on FB last night that they were seated directly behind Bonnie Raitt. I hope Jo had worked up enough courage to talk with her a bit and, well THAT would be one kick-a$$ tour!!!

Anyhow, if you're reading this Joanne, sorry I missed you at Memphis airport this afternoon. I guess our departure times didn't mesh but wishes for safe travels home, much success on the tour with Oli & Virgil and I'll see you in July!

I'm not surprised you didn't win your catagory (I think it's fixed - look at Joe, he's never even gotten a nomination as far as I know) but the nomination is definitely a feather in your cap and helped get your name out there.

What he said! I also really hope that you did manage to have a word with the Goddess herself - you may remember what I told you last year!  wink

Stodgy?   lol    I see I've been away too long.  Stodgy?  If the farts (the ones who made the rules) fix it the way they want it, and y'all (not picking on Rick here) don't like it, start your own awards process & ceremony.  Too much like work?

All of y'all...pay attention.  It's blues, people.  It's not guitar wars or hard rock on a blues format.  Young girl is good, and I love you Jo, and Cassie! who is part of the bloodline, but there's dues to be paid.  Tommy's paid some.  Bonnie...well sheesh.

We used to call 'em 90 day wonders, when they'd wander into the local bucket of blood and all the drunks would ooh and ah.  The elders who actually played blues, or other music  tongue , would put their fingers in their ears and wince.

If I really wanted an award from Blues people, I'd probably play the blues that they will recognize.  If I wanted to do my own thing, I'd tour for all the money I could make and I wouldn't cry about not getting any awards.  Eat some catfish...and grits.  wink

Re: Blues Music Awards - live broadcast on Sirus/XM

It's interesting to see the comments on this page, and the ones on more traditional blues forums. They are complaining that Derek Trucks, Tommy Castro and Jason Ricci have won awards when they don't exclusively play blues. My own view of that is that you are not any less a great blues player if you do play other styles too. Robert Johnson to Albert Collins, they all did it too.

The awards on the whole look pretty good, I think they did pretty well. They seem to be gradually getting more opening minded so I'd not rule out the possibility of both Joe and Jo winning awards in the future.
