Topic: Who the F*** is that - moment

Quite a few years ago, late on a sunny afternoon, lounging by the hotel pool in Sharm El Shek in Egypt, quaffing a few beers after a good days diving in the Red Sea, a small low key disco was playing selected tracks from obscure albums in the background. Me - no specific interest in guitarists at this time, then I had a seminal moment when this tune drifted across the patio between the palm trees - frankly I was just awestruck!

Never really heard of Joe Satriani until then, so this kinda blew me away. Who was this? Since then I've been hooked on good guitarists. Some time later, was fortunate enough to go to a 3G concert in Birmingham UK, with Joe S, Steve Vai and Robert Fripp. Over the top volume spoiled the night for me, but it was something else to see the virtuosity of these brilliant musicians.

Anyone else had such a moment?

Re: Who the F*** is that - moment

I've talked of this moment before. Nov. 1973 my best friend and I go to see the Who at the Cow Palace in SF and we stroll in casually late from our prep work in the parking lot and the opening act is tearing the place up and they finish the song to an arousing applause and as they walk off the crowd chants for more. The crowd gets their wish and I'm curious to hear more myself, so the band, who's name we couldn't even pronounce comes back and plays a song called Freebird and I was HOOKED! I rushed out and bought Pronouned Lynyrd Skynyrd the next day and wore it out. I've lost track of how many gigs of theirs I've been to by now, but it's more than anybody else, but Joe's running a strong second these days.

Very good thread Geoff. Lovely idea.

I mean most of us have had a 'Joe' moment in the last few years, but it is the ones that take you back to a place or event that stick.

Had a couple of those which I would gladly share.

I was in a bar in Lille, France a few years back with a then customer of mine on a factory visit. Barman stuck on a CD and the most wicked blues cut through the atmosphere. It was familiar style of playing but the great vocals had me fooled. I just had to know. Turned out to be a guy called Melvyn Taylor, who I had never heard of. Seems he had some success in France and other parts of Europe but he was out of Chicago. Just absolutely mental great playing. To this day I fail to understand how somebody that good isnt a household name.

Much earlier, in the '70's, I was at The Who's Charlton gig. Mid afternoon on comes this unknown act before Little Feat. They massacred us. An unbelievable set. That was the Florida Guitar Army aka The Outlaws. I was instantly a fan for life. How Little Feat followed them I will never know. They did a good job but man it must have been a thankless task.

So finally and even earlier my mates Aunt works at a packaging firm and starts bringing him rejected or damaged copies of albums. Like stuff we had never even heard of. We were 12 and used to hearing pop-pap the whole time on the radio.

So there's this one with a pretty extreme cover. No idea what to expect. First track and two 12 year olds reduced to frantic jibbering wrecks. This was music on a level we had never heard before. Talk about mind developing. The track was 21st Century Schizoid Man and the album of course, In the Court of the Crimson King. I hope he still has it because it would be worth a fortune now. It had some odd printing irregularities which would probably make it quite rare.

Re: Who the F*** is that - moment

and sometimes we hardheads don't even get to really listen to them until way later. my new wife and I had just moved to the Houston area 1980. she managed to get a job at a plant nursery, and befriended 2 men that both played guitar. yeah, I was jealous. one Fri night she came home and said they had invited her to go see someone at a nightclub in town, and they asked if I also wanted to go. nice offer, they knew I played a little. she didn't know who it was they were going to see, so I said no that I would stay home. the next morning she got up and proceeded into a complete rant about how good this guy was, and that his name is Eric Johnson. WTF is that! I would not find out until much later down the road when Cliffs of Dover hit the charts. Of course I went right out and bought it, and a new fan was born albeit years later than it should have been.

Re: Who the F*** is that - moment

This was early 70's, not sure exactly! A friend took me to a pub in North London where i live, to see a band called, Mungo Gerry. They had a hit single called, In The Summer Time. Great I thought! Get to the gig, 80 people MAX ..... No Mungo Gerry! Another band were able to jump in on the 11th Hour ... I/we had never heard of them....

They open with this....

I have two of those still kickin' myself mishaps. 1) Summer of '69 my high school girlfriend and her sister & boyfriend tried to talk me into going to see the Who @ the Fillmore West and for some unknown reason I passed. I missed hearing Tommy played live start to finish.....OUCH!!!
2) This kid from Miami I was workin' with in Berkeley in '75 or '76 tried to get me to go see some music @ The Old Waldorf in SF, a bar Bill Graham ran. I'd never heard of the band and passed. On Monday Ben came in raving about these guys from Australia......AC/DC in a BAR!!!!

Re: Who the F*** is that - moment

Hansamike, one of the best Southern Rock shows I ever saw was The Outlaws with Molly Hatchet as the opening act about '82. They really smoked when I saw them open for Marshall Tucker in the mid '70's. I saw them on their 30th anniversary reunion tour in '05 and they still blew me away. Had Hughie(RIP) & Henry playin' guitars and a third guy added to complete the Guitar Army. The reunion band had a new album ready when Hughie passed.

Yes, he sure does Mr. Smith and man, can he play that thing! First time I saw Aaron Williams and the Hoodoo was at a Blues Fest last year. They played a shortened set, but were just excellent. Aaron and I had a long talk about the Blues, Joe and Davy. They had opened for Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam last year too. Aaron is just 26 years old and one of the nicest guys you could meet. I can only hope for the best for the three of them. Maybe with a little help from me, they'll grab that brass ring. wink smile
