Topic: Philip Sayce - The Yin To Joe's Yang

Hey guys,

In the spirit of hipping each other to new artists and sharing cool things with each other I thought I'd let you all know about Philip Sayce, if you haven't already heard....He is, in my opinion, leading the way with Joe B. and Derek T. in keeping blues/rock alive in this generation while still keeping the genre fresh, interesting, and moving it forward.

Along with his cool songwriting style, his vocals are just incredible as well the obvious, INCENDIARY GUITAR WORK.

Philip Sayce yin??? Lao tse is shaking his head mildly. But otherwise: water has got its fiery sides, too. And there is a lot of fire in Innerevolution.

Really wanted to see Philip in London but unfortunately i'm gigging that night, saw him last October in DIngwalls, it was a mindblowing show, I never full appreciated his talents til I saw him live. he really gives it his all, is exciting to watch and was drenched in sweat after the first song (always a sign someones not phoning it in) plus hes not bad for the ladies to look at!

Re: Philip Sayce - The Yin To Joe's Yang

I'm really looking forward to Philip's new cd Innerevolution.  Any word on when it will be released in the States?

Re: Philip Sayce - The Yin To Joe's Yang

Gunter,

I love it!!!! Hahahahaha, yeah Philip is definitely NOT a Yin type at all, much like Joe isn't as well. Both are full of fire!!! I guess the analogy refers to Joe leading the way in the new blues/rock age with his Les Paul, Philip leading the way with his Strat and Derek Trucks somewhere in there with his INCREDIBLE work on his SG. How would TCM reconcile that one?!?!

It's cool you guys seem to already know about Philip and his music, really cool.

Jess: The first time I saw Philip I was at a music camp in LA and this guy dubbed to be "the next SRV" was supposed to be playing. Of course I was like oh jeeeeezz this could be really boring. Needless to say I was not bored or disappointed for one minute of that show, bought Peace Machine on the spot and talked to Philip afterwards. Instantly one of my favorite artists. He does bring something totally new to the table, yes he is influenced by certain people, very obviously, but the energy he brings live is ASTOUNDING!!

Now, Derek is without doubt yin in relation to Joe´s yang. As to Philip you can differentiate into young yang, which would represent the wood element  and Joe´s full yang which would represent the fire element. But then there is always this white dot in the black field and the black dot in the white field............

Love the song, the sound and the performance but that video is almost unwatchable. The editing is terrible! Too many, too fast and too frequent changes in cameras - almost makes me dizzy. I thought Joe's Rockpalast DVD was a bit overdone in that category at times, but it pales in comparison to this mess. Too bad.

Re: Philip Sayce - The Yin To Joe's Yang

I have Philips CD (with a bonus Live DVD!) on it's way to me at the moment courtesy of CDWow. I picked it up after reading so many positive comments on here, and listening to a few tracks on My Space.

I found out about Davy Knowles the same way, so this is a great forum for finding out about other music.

Re: Philip Sayce - The Yin To Joe's Yang

Well all you Philip Sayce fans, I got my first taste of him in action last night as he opened the UK leg uf his European tour at the Robin 2 club in Bilston.
What can I say? The guy is amazing!
We were treated to a high energy set from Philip, comprising songs from the album "Peace Machine", and his latest offering "Innerevolution". Philip gave the kind of performance that just keeps you enthralled - forunately I was still able to watch through my viewfinder - here's a link to the best of my shots: http://www.flickr.com/photos/42034502@N … 7609/show/

Great rhythm section too - this band rock - believe me!
Check out the dates above and catch them if you can.

Re: Philip Sayce - The Yin To Joe's Yang

Here's some of my comments from the show on Thursday:

While there were many that had some to see Sayce, Stefan Schill was a name not known to many of the crowd. He opened his set with Any Direction, which is the first song from his album, I will comment that the song finished with a two minute guitar solo and then played a selection of songs from his debut album. Icon is right in that the most blues based songs were not present in the set list, these are a good batch of songs with indicate that both Prince and Mayer have had an impact on this 19 yeard old. I did grab a few words with Stefan later and asked why Game Called Love was not played. He simply replied that they had to cut the set to 30 minutes. Their keenness to play as many songs as possible did meant there was not a great deal of chat between songs as they would start a new song seconds after the previous one had finished. Perhaps this was why Schill did not seem quite as assured as he does on CD. His vocals were a little low in the mix (it turned out he was gettting shocks from the mic!). The band got a good groove going and are clearly very talented players.  I watched the gig with some friends and all of them were impressed with his performance.

Sayce and his band then took to the stage with One Foot In The Grave, a very forceful introduction. Probably the two words I’d associate with Sayce would be power and energy and we got lots of both. Powerful Thing was next up and following this we got a mix of songs from his two recent albums including Bitter Monday, Over My Head and Changes. Sayce is constantly on the move and it’s very hard to tear your eyes away from his fretboard, he plays like a man possessed and his battered strats were shown no mercy! His bass player is pretty crazy too as Martin said. A moment of reflection came when he mentioned how he’d played Glasgow once before with the late Jeff Healey and dedicated the next song to him - As The Years Go Passing By. This song certainly showed the more delicate side to his playing and was a real highlight. The only downside to the show was that the mic was still giving off shocks so Sayce’s pretty high vocals were also a little difficult to deciper. Happily there were requests from the crowd for some of his songs, also one dodo kept shouting for Purple Haze, Little Wing etc (not needed with originals this good). The closing number was a rocked up version of the Police’s Next To You, before the encore of Alchemy. The latter is a sublime moment and will probably become Sayce’s equivalent of Walkways - you’ll hear some true feel in this one guys! Everyone was blown away by Sayce!

In summary what I saw from Sayce and Schill was two young artists who have taken influence from the blues and both used this to build up a very good array of modern sounding original songs in two very contrasting ways and with different crossover appeal. I felt they supplemented each other very well and both are excellent acts with a great future! Catch them in the UK and Germany on this tour!

Have booked for 100 club on Wednesday.  What a week!

Re: Philip Sayce - The Yin To Joe's Yang

Great review, Duncan.  big_smile  Everything you've said about Philp's performance brings back memories of his last visit in October 2009. I can't wait for tomorrow night at the 100 Club.

Maggie, prepare to have your socks knocked off!  lol  See you tonight.  wink

Re: Philip Sayce - The Yin To Joe's Yang

Thanks for the great review Duncan. I'm looking forward even more now to seeing Philip on Wednesday. I'm breaking my normal rule of not travelling into London on 2 consecutive nights - I'm seeing Sandi Thom (plus extra special guest) tonight and I just couldn't miss Philip Sayce.

Looks like I'll be seeing some familiar friendly faces at both gigs  cool

Re: Philip Sayce - The Yin To Joe's Yang

I first saw Philip at Dingwalls last October and he was brilliant then....last night he was fantastic. The sound was deafening , he warned us pre gig to get earplugs. He was in a very mischevious mood as well with the crowd, poor Michael got his 'toilet' story aired in public by Philip.  lol

Hoping he is back soon

Re: Philip Sayce - The Yin To Joe's Yang

Nice pics Roger and good to see you, Maggie, Michael, David and eldo again.

Likewise, I saw Philip at Dingwalls in October and therefore knew what to expect last night. I was really looking forward to this gig and wasn’t disappointed.

Stefan Schill kicked off his set at around 8.15pm and played until 8.50pm. Definitely one to watch, he plays with youthful enthusiasm and boundless energy and his playing ain’t bad either. Stefan and his very friendly band of bassist, drummer, keys and Stefan on guitar played songs from his current CD, Don’t Say A Word, which are strong on melody with memorable hooks. If you haven’t got it already I can thoroughly recommend it.

Philip came on around 9.25pm and played until 11pm.  Set list was a mix of tracks from Peace Machine and the new CD, Innerevolution:

1.    One Foot In The Grave
2.    Powerful Thing
3.    Over My Head
4.    Bitter Monday
5.    Changes
6.    Alchemy
7.    My Pearl
8.    Take You Away
9.    Slip Away
10.    All I Want Is To Get Next To You (not on either of above albums)

Encore:

11.    As The Years Go Passing By (in tribute to Jeff Healey)
12.    Cinnamon Girl

I think I lasted about half way through One Foot before I had to put my ear plugs in (half way to preserve some of the top end frequencies) and boy was it LOUD. As before Philip really goes for it from the off and within a couple of minutes was completely drenched in perspiration. But he’s not just a showman, he can play really well and the tone he gets from his battered Strat is gorgeous.

If you don’t know the 100 Club, the stage is wide and shallow, meaning Philip had only about one yard (one metre) to rush back and forth across the stage, often stopping in front of Maggie for her face to be no more than two feet from Philip’s guitar. Philip also did his usual walk through the audience so that everyone could get up close and also used the overhead speakers to run his fretboard up and down. It was breathtaking and quite exhausting just watching him.

After Cinnamon Girl, Philip made sure there wouldn’t be another encore as he tore the strings off his much abused Strat and threw it onto the stage. He then walked off leaving us all gobsmacked. Roger’s last pic shows the remnants of Philip’s Strat.

If you get the chance to see Philip on his current tour (this was his last date in the UK before moving on to Germany where I think Stefan is supporting), you must. Philip is one of the most exciting and gifted guitarists I have ever seen and, with his powerful voice, he has everything.

Footnote 1
At Sandi’s Borderline gig on Tuesday, Michael and I tried to get Joe to come along to the 100 club last night, but due to Sandi and Joe appearing on Irish TV in Dublin to play This Ol’ World yesterday morning, it wasn’t possible. I think Joe would otherwise have been there for what would have been an unbelievable reunion.

Footnote 2
As Roger mentioned, a certain senior forum member had his 2 minutes of fame when Philip related the story of being interviewed on the phone in the only quiet place he could find at the 100 Club. That was until said forum member found him. lol There's a bit more to this story but ethics prevent me from divulging the full details.  wink
