Topic: Who's gonna be there tonight in Albany NY??

...at the Kitty Carlisle Hart Theatre at The Egg performing arts center in the NYS Capital complex. Great venue--holds just about 1,000 and not a bad seat in the house. The show is sold out and has been for a couple of months. I'm in the 6th row of the main seating section (not the orchestra section, which is very small), dead center. This will be my 2nd JB show, having seen him in at the Landmark Theatre in Syracuse NY in late Feb. '09, at the beginning of the BoJH tour. Really looking forward to the show, of course! We're so close to Utica here (90 miles or so), I expect he'll have quite a few friends & family here.

For you JB show vets--any tips on meeting Joe after the show? I have no idea where his bus will be parked--the NYS Capital complex is huge, with all kinds of underground parking/garages.

Re: Who's gonna be there tonight in Albany NY??

Sorry I wasn't able to post this earlier. Work always gets in the way !!!  What an amazing show tonight at the "EGG"  You would never know Joe was still feeling under the weather, he absolutely tore it up. Gave it all for the "hometown" gathering in attendance. I know if he felt better he would have gone out and met some folks in the theater afterward. He had all he could do to greet us all . His mom ushered us backstage and chatted for a while until Joe came out. Great to see some old friends and meet some new ones.  Thanks Joe and all for an amazing show and your hospitality as always ! Set list as follows:
BOJH
Last Kiss
So Many Roads
So It's Like That
If Heartaches Were Nickels
Further On Up The Road
Sloe Gin
Lonesome Road
Happier Times
Blue And Evil
Three Times A Fool
Blues Deluxe
Young Mans Blues
Woke Up Dreaming
Mountain Time
encore:
Bird On A Wire
Just Got Paid(with Led Zep and Jeff Beck tease)
Joe never ceases to amaze me even after all these years. Thanks Joe B...You're The Best !! LarryG

Re: Who's gonna be there tonight in Albany NY??

Hey Larry,

This is Marci, Rocket's friend. I looked for you last night, but didn't see you! I was in the Center section, row H. Did get to say hi to Joe's dad, though. He was sitting right behind me! I agree with you, Joe's energy was incredible! I absolutely loved Further on up the Road and Blues Deluxe! And of course Mountain Time is always my favorite. Loved the Zepplin licks in Just Got Paid. Wish I had found you so I could have said Hi. Rocket told me to say hi to you too!

Re: Who's gonna be there tonight in Albany NY??

Hey there Marci, it would have been nice to see you again too !!! I was on the left, Row C. Got to the show very close to start time because of work. Hope it isn't so long before Joe is around again. I'll send a note to Rocket to say hello also, thanks for passing the word along. Talk to you later, Larry G

Re: Who's gonna be there tonight in Albany NY??

It's been 10 long years since I've seen Joe live (I don't travel too far for shows these days and the last time he was in the Albany area my daughter had just been born). 10 years ago it was with 6 other folks in the lower level of Valentine's. He's come a long way!

Great set list (although Ball Peen is a favorite) and he never ceases to amaze with the fast fingerwork and emotion.

Was nice to say hello to his Dad again. I was the guy with the old school Bloodline shirt on (1995 was good to me, photographing the band 6 times and catching some amazing shows around the northeast).

Keep an eye out as there will be a cool contest at fye.com soon as I'm working on the final touches on that.

What blistering versions of Sloe Gin and Happier Times! His story about coming to the Egg on a school field trip was priceless. Great stuff.

Re: Who's gonna be there tonight in Albany NY??

Fabulous show indeed! I thought the show I saw in Feb. '09 was great, but this topped it. How Joe can maintain that incredible level of emotion & intensity for a 2 hour show (especially when he's not feeling up to snuff) is a mystery to me.  Sloe Gin, Blues Deluxe, Mountain Time and (of course) Just Got Paid were all highlights for me. Plus, I'm a "gearhead" and the constant stream of gorgeous Gibson and Music Man guitars coming on stage adds to the enjoyment for me.

BTW, re: the set list, don't forget the Django lead-in to Mountain Time!

Re: Who's gonna be there tonight in Albany NY??

Show was awesome as usual, but i wanted to give everybody a heads up on that venue. If you don't have seats fairly close to the middle, you won't see the whole band. We had great seats on the right side until we noticed..."We can't see Carmine or Bogie!"  We literally did not see them until they took their bow at the end of the show. Of course we were there to see Joe, but that ruined the dynamic of the show. Don't get me wrong left thoroughly satisfied!

Hey Bp, I was at that Valentine's show !!!! I saw you and that cool Bloodline shirt when I went up to say hello to Len and Deb after the show. I'll watch for the fye.com contest.
Ah yes, how could I leave off the Django intro !!! I was copying Joe's setlist verbatim as I was typing when I got home.  Now to figure out the next show and where it will be...

I think at the Valentine's show it was you, me, Len, and his manager Roy, plus 2 regulars at the bar. LOL. Oh, how the times have changed!

Early May on the contest.

Here's a review in the Albany Times Union Preview magazine of the Albany show:

Joe Bonamassa @ the Egg 4/20/10April 21, 2010 at 12:08 am by David Malachowski
By David Malachowski
Special to the Times Union

ALBANY—Who says folks don’t go out to see music on a weeknight? Fast rising guitar hero Joe Bonamassa brought his six-string prowess to a sold-out crowd at the Egg on Tuesday night, and inside, you’d have thought it a Saturday, way after midnight.

Hailing from Utica, child prodigy Smokin’ Joe Bonamassa jammed with BB King at 12, soon he was in Bloodline with Miles Davis, Robbie Krieger and Berry Oakley’s sons, and was produced by the legendary Tom Dowd. Now, almost 33, Bonamassa is no longer cute kid, and that’s a good thing.

In Albany, dressed in a sharp suit, dark sunglasses and brandishing a double-neck guitar, Bonamassa dove into the thunderous “Ballad Of John Henry,” and quickly had the crowd in the palm of his fleet fingered hand. He brought up the tempo with “Last Kiss,” which echoes Muddy Water’s classic “Louisiana Blues,” and really let loose. That was until steamy slow blues “So Many Roads,” where he really ripped off a down and dirty over-the-top solo and bested himself.

Not quite as hunky as peers Kenny Wayne Sheppard or Jonny Lang, he puts his focus on his fretboard. So much so, though Bonamassa’s band was top-notch, they were very much behind him, and there was little interaction with his band mates.

Shuffle “So, It’s Like That” had a nice barroom feel, but “If Heartaches Were Nickels” was a sure showstopper, a passionate vocal (even though he said he was sick) coupled with an emotional solo.

Chestnut “Further On Up The Road” was well done, but a quiet intro to yet another slow blues “Sloe Gin” with just piano, was moving, as he juxtaposed quiet sensitive licks with rapid-fire machine-gun bursts of notes. You can’t have too many slow blues tunes, and in “Blues Deluxe” (made famous by the Jeff Beck Group) Bonamassa burned with dynamic, tough, taut playing.

A wildly unhinged “Young Man Blues” was more The Who than Mose Allison, soon a solo acoustic intro to “Woke Up Dreaming” was cascading notes, scales and arpeggios, at lightening speed, quoting songs and jumping genres as the crowd went crazy.

Given the Bonamassa treatment, a spare reading of Leonard Cohen’s “Bird on a Wire” was another highlight, and after quoting the intro to Willie Dixon’s “I Ain’t Superstitious” (another nod to Jeff Beck) Bonomassa pulverized ZZ Top’s “Just Got Paid.”

With fine, fast, fluid technique, Bonamassa’s playing is a given, and he’s becoming one of the best of his generation. His songs were decent, but he sure knows how to pick covers that suit him and get the crowd riled up.

One more thing Joe has fortunately figured out, is you just can’t beat a slow blues in a recession.

JOE BONAMASSA

You are correct with the cast of characters at Valentines !!! I  have pics around somewhere I believe, have to go in search of those. I still have Roy's business card around in my file !!!

Re: Who's gonna be there tonight in Albany NY??

Hunky? First time I've ever heard anyone say that.

Re: Who's gonna be there tonight in Albany NY??

I never thought Hunky would be a requisite for guitar players. Most are either skinny or somewhat chunky. Time for Joe to start pumping iron??  lol

Hi all, I thought that comment was out of left field too. A good interview other than that bizarre comment !!!

Re: Who's gonna be there tonight in Albany NY??

My first JB show and certainly NOT my last. I wish he'd come a little closer to Hartford, but it was well worth the drive. Beautiful venue and the greatest display of guitar playing I've ever seen. Awesome.

Re: Who's gonna be there tonight in Albany NY??

Hey Cprzech
I am from down Norwich way. We had 10 trek to Peekskill last Sat night to see the master. A few in our group were were newbies like yourself. They couldn't speak after the show they were so blown away. This with Joe sick on top of it. The couldn't buy enough CD's etc after the show either.
I would love to see JB closer to Hartford also ( The Bushnell would be perfect). Joe mixes venues ( we saw him at the Garde in New London a couple yrs back) so we can all hold out hope for a Hartford appearance someday.
Glad you had an enjoyable experience and hope you have many more!

Rob

Re: Who's gonna be there tonight in Albany NY??
