Dear me, so long since the last post here.  roll

Anyway, my first Sonny show was not only every bit as special as I had expected it would be, it was also the reason why I wasn't sitting at home waiting for the ash cloud to lift.  lol

I was mesmerized by his technique from literally four feet away. It's a great pity that I managed to &*%^ up the pics I took. We had the chance to talk to him afterward -  he's a charming and delightful man, one who has mastered the art of smiling at the very moment that a picture is taken, unlike some....  roll

Re: Sonny Landreth

He truly is amazing. The first time I saw Sonny was in San Juan Capistrano and that was also the first time I got to meet Libby & Steve and Danny in person. (up in the beginning of the thread). I was maybe 6 feet away from Sonny when he played. Saw him again in November in Detroit. I'm glad that you got to see him play and to meet him. Good thing you're here George, with all that ash and smoke hanging in the air in Europe!

Major Tom to ground control...

Re: Sonny Landreth

Hey George, isn't Zandaam close to Amsterdam? Thinking of going to Raalte on the Saturday to see Golden Earring. Is Raalte like a 3 day outside festival? I see that 24 Pesos are playing the Paradiso on the Friday too.

Yes, Zaandam is literally just up the road from the Dam, 20-30 minutes by car depending on the time of day, or 15 minutes by train from Central station. It's a nice little venue too.

I'm already planning to be at Schoeppingen for the Saturday and Sunday (11/12), so hitting Raalte on the way back west will probably be a bit too much for me. Raalte is two days (12/13) and outdoors.

I've got my eye on the Paradiso on Friday too, but for a different reason - I'm hoping to see someone else very interesting there in the small room, not the main hall. I'll post about that IF it happns.  wink

Let's have a Grolsch together in Schöppingen.
And you should really spend the Saturday too.

Re: Sonny Landreth

We went to see Sonny Landreth at a free Jazz & Blues festival in Indiana, Pennsylvania this weekend. Phil had seen Sonny last summer as part of a Frampton show and was determined to see him again so we drove 2 hrs to check him out. Well, I gotta say I'm glad we went. Sonny plays slide like I have seen no one play slide. He really is amazing to watch. He has so many cool techniques that I have never seen before. I did video of his whole show, but for some reason youtube is being difficult and has muted two of my videos. They say there is some copyright infringement pertaining to a Crossroads Festival 2013 show, but it makes no sense. The two songs in question are all over the internet uploaded by different people from different shows. So instead of the 15 that were played, I will share 13. The first two are instrumental. I loved "Blue Tarp Blues" it features a really interesting technique he uses which sounded very cool. So please check that one out if you've never seen that song before.

Re: Sonny Landreth

I tried to get into him a long time ago.  I do appreciate his extreme talent with slide, but his singing has kind of made me wain off of his music.  Something about his music is too light for me, more a laid back style.

I don't really think the drummer in the videos helps his sound.  Just too much on the cymbals.

Just not for me, but for others its good.

"Holy Toledo"  -  Bill King   "Just Win Baby" - Al Davis  "The Autumn Wind" - Steve Sabol

I agree his singing is his weak part and they were having some sound issues at this festival so that could be one reason the cymbals are a tad overbearing. Sonny's playing, though, is pretty cool. Loved watching his hands slide back and forth so effortlessly.

Saw Sonny Landreth at the Birchmere in Virginia this weekend. Jimmy Thackery opened for him. Great night of music. Sonny invited Jimmy to play on two songs of his. First time they had ever played together and they sounded great!

Sonny was great at the Blues Festival at Peer Belgium.

Re: Sonny Landreth

Sonny was at the Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival last weekend playing in the rain. Amazing how the musicians managed with the horrible weather conditions. Sonny took it all in stride and just donned a hat at one point.
