Re: Fender fiasco deja vu ???

Kev: Everyone is bashing Fender and all I believe we have is one guitar that strongly resembles his.  Maybe this is marketing from Fender- create a buzz to see what his fan base really is and if a sig series would fly and who knows, seems like Phil is helping out by airing his dirty laundry on facebook over one very like guitar is very unprofessional unless done on purpose by all parties.....hmmmm?

Seems to me, everyone is getting sucked right into a marketing strategy.

Potentially took artistic values from it??  Are you serious? Have you seen the pics? By 'Man Up' I mean actually signing Philip Sayce to an endorsement deal and paying him. If it's a 'one off' guitar - fine. Boycott Suhr and other Strat styled guitars? Of course not - they would be the first to tell you where they got their design ideas from. But for Fender to say that CS guitar has nothing to do with Phil Sayces....yeah right.

Should everybody boycott Suhr and other Strat styled guitars, as these are very near designs from Fender....hmmm?  I also  wonder how many big or little things Fender might have done for Phil over the years that never gets discussed?

Re: Fender fiasco deja vu ???

Wow I never thought of it like that....could it be? I doubt Fender would want negative publicity but sometimes it's better than no publicity at all. They could come outlooking like the good guys if they do indeed create a Sayce sig model.

Wow, lots of interesting opinions on this!  Okay, I'll further add to the discussion and stir the pot a bit more  wink .  It's commonly known that Fender would overspray on early 60's slabboard sunburst Stratocasters if the sunburst was "flawed".  Back in those days they were a lot more particular about finish I guess lol, and to save costs, they just oversprayed with a solid colored laquer.  Now before all of this I have seen a few one off Custom Shop guitars that were made to replicate this.  Phil's "Mother" Strat is a real deal example of this and is not wholely unique in that regard.  The wear marks are not exact on both examples but it doesn't take a brain scientist to see that Fender had Phil's guitar in mind at the very least.  Is is shady?  IMO very much so, and the guy definately deserves a signature model (again refer to my Blink 182/Tom Delong comment earlier BARFFFF  yikes ).

Secondly, I find it very amusing to see how people's opinion on the Stratocaster model has changed since the earlier days of the forum.  Use the search function...there are a million threads on the Clapton Strats, Goldie, Gigliottis, Jubilees, SRV/Hendrix, ANDY, etc etc etc.  Almost NOBODY even whispered about Les Pauls.  It really sucks what happened to Joe, and I feel for the guy.  I'd have been pissed off to no end and would have likely reacted similarly if I was in his shoes.  The fact of the matter is, I love the sound of a Stratocaster.  Always have, always will.  I know for a fact that Joe still does as well, even if his tastes have led him more to the Les Paul.  We are all individuals, so I say with caution, try to be true to yourself.  Joe's word while always helpful, entertaining, and educational, isn't always the Gospel.  The fact of the matter is that Fender pumps out some absolutely glorious guitars often at great prices.  Gibson does as well, though IMO at a much less consistant rate.  In my experience, PRS guitars are the most consistantly great per guitar and model.  I've always said that if Clapton, Hendrix, SRV, EVH, and Jimmy Page all exclusively played Gretches then nobody would want anything to do with vintage Strats/Les Pauls.

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

Re: Fender fiasco deja vu ???

Got a point here.  90% of the board most likely plays a Les Paul because they got turned onto Joes new sounds or because they feel bad for him.  I myself don't seem to give a crap as all I own now are Fenders even fender amps.  I just sold a Les Paul Classic that I put a bigsby on because of Joes 58' reissue having one, and bought a 2008 baja telecaster with less the a couple hours play on it.  For the record that telecaster without me setting it up played better then any gibson I've ever owned.  I think my next guitar is going to be a Dean Leslie West model from Korea then I won't have people bad mouthing my guitar.

Re: Fender fiasco deja vu ???

No doubt I love my Les Paul.  Wouldn't own one if Joe didn't get such a crazy sound from one.  However, there is a very large place in my heart for the Fender Stratocaster and even Tele.  To be completely honest, I have a such un-descriminating tastes that almost any guitar appeals to me in some way.  The next guitar that I'll likely buy would be a Gretch of all things and I sure ain't no Chet Atkins!  I just love a unique sound.  Les Pauls, Les Paul Specials, SGs, 335s, Strats, Teles, Gretches, PRSs, Dobros, 12 Strings, Baritones, Banjos, Lapsteels, etc etc etc all have a unique sound.  There is nothing wrong with being a Fender guy.  That would be like saying you wouldn't buy a Black & Decker drill because the owners are !@$#holes.  In the end guitars are just tools for making music.
