I listened to the songs and like 'em.  TDBT are one of those great bands flying under the radar.  Thanks for the shout.

Re: Latest Drive-By Truckers Album: The Big To-Do, Streaming In Full Now

I just found out the other day that Jason Isbell used to be a member of Drive-By Truckers and he contributed to 3 of the earlier albums.  Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit was the replacement act for Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam when they cancelled for the Hot August Blues Fest last summer.  I was bummed that Davy cancelled, but Jason turned out to be an excellent replacement... I'd never heard of him before, but I was pleasantly surprised and impressed.  For a while now I've been familiar with Drive-By Truckers in name only, but this bit of information makes me think I should be checking them out.  Any suggestions on where to begin?

Am not the most familar with the band and their history myself so don't know where Isbell fit in apart from being their lead guitarist at one point. Well anyway this album is vey good (and streaming free which helps) but otherwise their opus has to be Southern Rock Opera, telling the story of the south through the eyes of Lynard Skynard fans and alonside the history of the band very cool

'After three years on the road a tight-knit group of musicians emerged and they began work on 2001's Southern Rock Opera. Southern Rock Opera is a double album executed as a song cycle. The album uses the rise and literal fall of Lynyrd Skynyrd as a means of analysis of the cultural deterioration of the South during the 1970s.'

I agree that Southern Rock Opera is the album to start with, but the new album is quite enjoyable - especially the cover of Kiss' early gem, "Strutter".

Re: Latest Drive-By Truckers Album: The Big To-Do, Streaming In Full Now

The premise of Southern Rock Opera sounds intriguing... I'll have to check that out.  And a Strutter cover?  I love old KISS!  (Reminds me of my childhood, like elementary school, haha!)  Thanks for the tips, guys!

I see DBT are on Archive.org... I'll have to check out some live shows too.  Do you happen to know of any particularly good performances and/or quality recordings I should be looking for?  If not, the posters over on JamBase can probably hook me up... DBT are pretty well-known and liked over there.  Actually I'm not sure why I never checked them out before this.

Hey guys, I don't see anywhere to stream the new CD on DBT's site... is it gone now, or am I just missing something?  I did watch a few of the vids on the News page though... so far I like what I've heard pretty well.

Was listening to my iPod today on my daily walk by the river and the Trucker's song, "Eye's Like Glue" came on and I really listened to it for the first time.  I've got to say I was overcome with emotion listening to the words and the sparse acoustics.  A very powerful song about father/son relationships.

jason isbell is pretty good, but i do not think he was a good fit with dbt.  i have always held that mike cooley is by far the best songwriter in the group and really wish he would be the primary contributor.  nothing against hood, really enjoy his work, but the his songwriting skills are minor league compared to cooley.

Over on the JamBase forums, the concensus seems to be that DBT are "missing something" since Isbell left, yet they still seem to enjoy the band well enough.  Just judging by what I've heard of Jason (1 show) and what I've heard of DBTs (only a few songs, so far), I think I can see what you mean about him not really being a good fit.

yeah i think he is very good but his style is more suited to a solo act

Count me as another who  thinks the band is more listenable without Isbell.  I own and like Jason's solo stuff, but I prefer Cooley's version of DBT.
