Topic: Wilmington

A "70%" Joe wowed Wilmington tonight at the beautiful and acoustically excellent Grand Opera House. It was my first show since last November in Amsterdam, so not surprisingly, the set list was somewhat different. Although I missed two personal favorites, I thought this set had a really good flow to it, with the emphasis still on oldies rather than on Black Rock songs.

This was also my first experience of the US light rig (due to be used at the larger European venues this summer), and I have to say that I was mightily impressed. No overkill, just a really good combination of fixed and rotating spots. I thought the lights were brilliant!

Before the show we met up with Hombre, Mrs Hombre and their group at their lovely home in Newark, where we were also fed various wonderful things, though the weather sadly prevented a proper outdoor barbecue.

After the show, we managed a brief word with Roy and Joe, though sadly no sighting of either Carmine or Rick (we never expect to see Bogie  wink  ), before heading home along dark rural roads that reminded me of Michael's 'Pain & Sorrow in Maryland' video on Youtube.  big_smile

Thanks for the report Amsterhammer. It sounds like Joe had recovered a bit for the show. He tweeted that he was going to take a rest before the next show.  Those lights do add to the show nicely. It's actually better to see from back in the theater since the patterns on the walls and ceiling can't be seen from down front. I found myself craning my neck in Bakersfield to watch it.

I hear you George, catch me if you can... Glad you enjoyed the show. It's been a fun run this year. Talk about going everywhere in no time flat. In less than three months we've been to Moscow, London, Seattle, Sydney, Tokyo, NYC and a ton of points in between. Now THAT's touring. See you soon.

As one of the few non "Guitar Guys" who has become a Bonamaniac, kudos to you on the drums (also my instrument).  You, Rick and Carmine do an unbelievable job with Joe.  Keep it up and see you Friday night in DC.  Hope you guys are cool with 100+ pollen levels....

Hey guys and gals.....great show in Delaware last night.....well worth the 95 mile jaunt down the turnpike!!!   The Grand is an awesome venue.....particularly from the front row........see ya in Red Bank on wednesday guys!!!!  I have some nice footage from last night

I have to wholeheartedly agree with Amsterhammer's review.  This was my second time seeing Joe and had hoped to meet up with all of you guys since I was flying solo (or so I thought) up to Wilmington from Baltimore last evening. 

Sorry to Hombre but I missed out on the meet up due to a couple of too-old-to-be-drunk-at-6pm-on-a-sunday friends.   Missed the first song because they didn't believe me that he would go on right at 7pm. At least I got $20 bucks out of the drunkards.  smile

But non the less the show was amazing. Especially when he played "Happier Times" I was so looking for that.  I think most of us would have given him a pass if the show had been sub-par due to illness but Joe is the consummate showman and really hit this one out of the park.   Maybe at the next one I can meet up with you guys. Due to schedule I can't make Harrisburg or DC but we'll have to see if Black Country is touring next year.

Me three, when it comes to thinking a sick Joe still delivers a better show than many hale performers. Joe was beside himself afterward fearing his vocals were horrid...fear not!

A BIG thanks to Hombre and his wife for the pre-show feast and RAH via a big screen and surround sound. I told Roy and he said it's one of his favorite things about Joe fans...the way we meet and socialize around shows. I've yet to meet a Joe fan I don't like. Bonabuddies rule!

The venue was wonderful. The acoustics were excellent!! Big hand of applause to Warren for the mix. I heard everybody. That reminds me to once again trip over myself giving praise to the band. Bogie lays down such crisp, layered beats that it's hard to stay seated. There were moments that demanded attention. Carmine, Bless him, still dealing with the retinal problems, sported the patch and sat like a good boy. But, he wasn't sitting still at any point. And, not many would look as good as he does with the eye patch. Brings out the wench in me smile Rick...man, all I can say is he doesn't get enough credit for the subtle, yet powerful, contributions he makes. Ricks voice works so well with Joe's and the keys make for a full sound. Again, it was wonderful to be able to hear all this!!!

Of course Joe came out and posed for pics, signed CD's etc., while looking like he was going to pass out at any moment. I'm still kicking myself for not making him some chicken noodle soup..I'm hoping there's another maternal fan that might on Tues.

Kevin, sorry we didn't get to meet you. We'll try next time as I'm certain Joe will be back.

I love Joe and this band!! I love Roy and Warren and sound like I need to be medicated, I know, but at my age thrills don't come easy!! Thank you to all for another grand memory!!!! Cathy

I forgot to mention the front tag on the tour bus "BONA-WHO?"  I want one!!!!!  George is going to try to post a pic.

Yeah! I just got my new Cali vanity plate with the palm trees, "JOEBROX", where are the plate holders with " Joe Who? Always On The Road" in the store?????? You'll sell a ton of them Alex!!

Way too funny - I want one, too!  Just totally captures the usual reaction one gets from someone who has never heard Joe before.  Glad you had fun - still waiting for my turn.  Cathy is right - the whole band certainly makes the whole more than perfect.

Great review George, a 70% Joe is better than 100% of anybody else. What a great day & evening, It was really nice meeting you & Cathy. We are still trying to wind down, that front row was a first for us. I know you would have liked to have heard Bridge to Better Days, it was on the set list I got from Carmine, maybe they will play it next Sunday.
    Joe is amazing, as bad as he was feeling he still took the time to sign autographs & have pictures taken. Its no wonder his fans love him so much, to be feeling so bad & still be accessible really says something about him as a person.

If you happen to read this Joe.....I hope you are feeling better.  We will see you Saturday & Sunday. smile

We are trying to catch you Bogie, my wife gave you guys the embroidered towels last year at Penn's Peak. She has everyone elses signature on her shirt except yours, she has 2 chances this coming weekend. Hopefully we can catch you after one of the shows. smile
