Topic: Icelandic Eruption

The volcanic ash cloud has disrupted air traffic throughout Europe and will affect the economy in many ways.
The last time there was an eruption like this was Krakatoa. The global climate was cooled by the ash in the stratosphere for years and sunsets around the world were spectacular. Scientists were able to identify the jet stream by tracking the ash cloud as it circled the world. Global warming, if there is such a thing, will be offset for a long time. Look forward to spectacular sunsets in the future as the cloud of micron sized ash particles circle the globe. Edward Muench's famous painting, "The Scream" was attributed to the colors in the sky at the time.

Don't let it sit on the car. It is corrosive if it gets wet as there is a lot of sulfur in it. It'll eat the paint off the car as it turns to sulfuric acid.

Didn't the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in the Philipines have a similar effect around 20 years ago?

Maybe so, but I don't think ash got into the jet stream as much as sulfuric aerosols did. The Icelandic eruption has the "double whammy" of being below a glacier, which has generated a huge steam cloud that causes the silicon in the lava and ash to break into microscopic fragments. These will persist in the high atmosphere for years. Mt Pinatubo was in the southern hemisphere so the sunset phenomenon was only visible there.

I just got an e-mail from an English friend stranded in Florida.  He was told flights back to the UK will be delayed for two weeks (May 1).  He asked me where he could stay on the cheap.  Had his whole family with him for a Orlando vacation and was due to get home this weekend.  Does anybody have any suggestions?  I'm thirteen hours away or I'd tell him to come here.  Can the Red Cross help or FEMA?

That's terrible! I would try the Red Cross. The British Embassy may have an idea too. Surely there must be a lot of people stranded by this event who are in need of help.

edit: I've heard of people rerouting via Portugal or Spain where the ash hasn't been falling. Then taking rail the rest of the way. Just a suggestion. Not inexpensive, but probably less than putting up a family for weeks.

Very glad this didn't happen a year ago!  There would have been a few disappointed people on this forum.

Curby - could your friend rent a car and drive to your place - would still be cheaper than hotels, etc.  Hopefully some organization or someone will step up to help the thousands who are stuck - many with not a lot of cash or options.  I'm sure we've all joked about being stuck someplace on vacation, but it really isn't all that funny.

It's been reported that when this volcano last erupted in 1821, the event lasted for two years. I'm hoping it won't last anywhere near that. There are millions of stranded travellers on both sides of the pond. Maybe you can fit in a few more Joe shows George!
