To smooth, Keeley or Demeter. I never have my Demeter off. It's always there.
If you want to squash a la early Dire Straits, an original script logo Dynacomp.
ok so basically what does the demeter bring to the table?
Barber Tone Press...played a few chords...realised how great they actually are.

I have been debating this as well. Since going on an EJ kick lately and the addition of my Superlead, I've also considered adding a compressor somewhere in the mix. Others have turned me on to these EP-3 Echoplex preamps that emulate the presense of an old echoplex in your chain. ClinchFX makes on called the EP Pre and Xotic Effects makes one called the EP Booster. It's not a compressor persay, and not an overdrive either although it does both. People swear by them and I may end up getting one myself. Many people claim that guys like Jimmy Page, EVH, Eric Johnson, and many others would put the echoplexes in line even if they weren't on because the preamps added more sustain, harmonics, and just did something "magic" to the sound.
I love my EP Booster. It stays on at all times when I'm playing my Strat. I use it as a clean boost on occasion with the LP.

I need to get a little more twangy sounds from the Les Paul for a couple of songs, and I don't want to switch to a different guitar could also use it for leads and to smooth out a couple of things. Problem is I don't have a clue what to get. I have looked at the demos of the dyna comp which seems nice, but man there are a lot to choose from.

Demeter- very uncoloured, very subtle, thickens slightly, smooths.
Dynacomp - listen to Sultans of Swing, Lady Writer and the opening licks are 100% dyna. It's lush, squishy, thick and noticable, but delicious imo. New ones are shockers including the CS re-issue- the best are original script 1974, but are £300. My favourite pedal of all time.
Cs2- underated- a bit of a halfway house- it also has a mix knob. Get a MIJ for £80.
Keeley- more like Demeter, but more aggressive.
I will run two at once for some things- esp Gilmourish stuff.
For some reason I never really got into the Boss Compressor/Sustainer pedal. I didn't thing it really did anything. Not enough to put it in my ever so exclusive line of effects.

Wouldn't disagree. It's a bit of a DFA pedal. I am a Dynacomp junkie. Love 'em.
They Dyna Comp is at the top of my list and for a change its acctually affordable! HA
I played with the compressor on vox tonelab into the Jubliee last night and it sounded nice so I am convinced I need one!

Dire Straits tone comes via a Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer.
I've got the Analogman Juicer which is a perfect clone of one.. it's FANTASTIC for single note lines as it compresses but also adds a little grit to the tone, I absolutely love mine ( useless for funk rhythm though )
I also have the Demeter for studio use which is great for rhythm and squashy, more traditional compressed lines. 
Well, I have never been able to get along with a compressor. It is probably the fact that I just don't know how to use one properly, but I play through old amps and I felt like the compressor was giving these old amps a "processed" sound. I had a Keeley and a Barber Tone Press. Just didn't work for me. I don't like to subdue my amps. I want them to talk back to me with some attitude. This is all in reference to using a compressor combined with amp gain or overdrive, not clean.

Yeah, this is what I was worried about, at the moment I use 2 amps blended to get my sound and basically need no pedals whatsoever except delay and reverb I have a chorus and wha that rarely get used and SOV-2 OD for occassional lead boost , so I dont really want to interfere with my tone unless the compressor was totally transparent ,but also gave you some sustain and gave some dynamics to the clean sound ?
What exactly do you feel you'd use the compressor for or what makes you think you'd use one at all ?
I've used many and if you give me specifics> i'll say which pedal I'd use.
Ditto - I was convinced I needed a compressor after listening to some Youtube clips and settled on a Keeley 2-knob. I sold it 2 weeks later. It just wasn't for me - I didn't like the effect at all - maybe it's good for country or adding sustain with a clean tone, but for what I do (Blues/Rock ala Bonamassa) it wasn't needed. An LP and a Marshall gives me all the sustain I need.
