Wow this thread was worth to search for. I ever asked myself how the finish was made when I first saw the guitar. Now I know and I know I was right about the metal under the varnish. That is something the guitars look great and they are special.

forget about new Fender or Gibson at the lower end of the spectrum. Reverend makes very nice guitars for a very modest price. They have an excellent rep for tone and quality.  Also, buying used is always an option.  Good luck.

Thanks. I ended up getting a Blueburst Dean Z with Grover tuners and Seymour Duncans. I would definitely have looked into Reverend though. I love that Les Paul copy. Oh well.
Oh the Dean is made in Korea but I was told - and it sure seems like it - that it doesn't even seem like it's made in Korea. It stays in tune and the frets don't buzz.
