Topic: JCM 800 + Marshall Guv'nor

I thought it would be a nice combination, but i didn't like it so much. Perhaps next time i should try it with a gibson les paul instead of a 335 (which needs to be fixed, it can't tune). I've been trying to find a sound that fits perfectly to what i play. I've already tried with the normal distortion from the amp but i found myself kind of limited, i need a pedal, i know i need it. The guv'nor pedal is the old one from the 80's, not the new one. If you people can give me some advice on how to get a GM/EC tone, it would be great! Here are some videos:

Re: JCM 800 + Marshall Guv'nor

For the Gary Moore thing, run the amp semi distorted and try a tubescreamer pedal of some kind.  For EC, try a similar setting with a fuzz device so some sort such as a Fuzzface, treble booster, or tonebender.

I think it sounds great. I recently added the Little Big Muff pi, to my signal chain. You might give that a try; I have a 335 with the classic '57s; and through the Big Muff into my Peavy Classic 100 with EL84's; it has a real nice punch to it.

Re: JCM 800 + Marshall Guv'nor

I tend to take clapton very serious, so I try to help all I can.  I personally would cut the gain down so that you have preamp distortion but the volume turned up enough that the power amp tubes warm up.  Thats Claptons secret, he turns up as loud as the amp can go then your Volume on your guitar become very musical.  If that combo is a 50 watt amp you can get away with this pretty well.  I had a 335 and a 1986 jcm800.  It had 2 channels clean and distortion.  I hated the distortion channel and loved the clean channel.  Cool thing was the master volume worked on both channels.  I turned the volume on clean all the way up and left the master alone to adjust to taste.  I couldn't stand the amount of presense that amp had so I kept that at 0.  The main thing with claptons tone though is vibroto.  He bends and vibroto's a lot and if you can't hit the bends with the vibrotos you'll struggle with the clapton sound.  From the cradle has the best use out of a 335 that I've ever heard him record other then Crossroads.  In some regards I love it better.

Gary Moore is a different animal and I can't help you there.

Re: JCM 800 + Marshall Guv'nor

thanks for the clapton tip!

i love his tone (specially the old one), but the new one would help me a lot when i want to play less heavy and with fender.

Re: JCM 800 + Marshall Guv'nor

I've played in this combination before. It's a winner for sure.

Tripod, I mean this with no offense, but it seems like there is some... what is the word here...  body I guess, missing (in the videos you linked ) when compared to the tones you are seeking.  My suggestion would be to second what was said before in this thread and turn the gain down, crank the master volume, and use the volume knob on your guitar to control the gain;  that way you can cook the power tubes.  Another thing is your tone knob.  Have you tried bringing your bridge tone knob down to say about 6 or 7?  This may eliminate some of the harshness and add the GM/EC sweetness element.  Another option would be to play on the neck position.

+1000000       From the Cradle is my personal reference for the 'perfect' Clapton tone.  The Cream stuff was great, but nothing beats that smokey blues club tone that he got on that album.  That honkey Tweed + ES335 tone is absolutely to die for!

how could i take your advice as an offence?
thanks for the tip, macg1. i do use the volume knob on my guitar to control the gain, but my mistake is that i don't usually crank the master volume.

Re: JCM 800 + Marshall Guv'nor

Hey I kinda like the sound you got there ! I would find that sound pretty usable  cool   JCM800s are good sounding amps and the guvnor seems to work pretty well too .

Re: JCM 800 + Marshall Guv'nor

Hi!
I'm fond of Moore's tones myself and I can tell you that you nailed one of his latest tones on your second video here. I'm talking about his 2/3 last albums' tone (Back to the Blues and Bad For You Baby). It's clearly that. Now as everybody here has already said, you just need more volume to get the "body" missing and increase the sustain. Other than that it's just there!

As for Clapton I'd go for less gain and more mids, less treble. I'm not particularly fond of his tone lately. I think he sounded way better in his early days with John Mayall and at the beginning of the 90's though both tones are really different. My favorite tone is from the Journeyman album/24 nights DVD. But that tone was Soldano all the way, it's a lot harder (and expensive) to achieve than Beano's tone or his late Cornell tone.

Good luck!

yes, actually those are the albums i like the most, although they don't have the greatest tone...i think still got the blues, afterhours, around next dream and blues for greeny have the best tone.

thanks to all for the advices...i really feel i need to learn more about the tones i like.

My favourite modern Eric is also Journeyman, a great album which just preceded SGTB.  I'm not a person who understands the technical stuff I just have a pair of ears!  I like the way you play 'Pod but I think the tone needs to be a bit richer and fuller.  No idea how!  Maybe a cry-baby like Gary uses???
