Topic: Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam @ Bush Hall 7 April 2010

When Davy answered my “See ya, Davy. Come back soon” with “Yes, I will” at the end of the last show I saw him at in London in February, I really didn’t expect it to be quite this soon, but I’m so pleased it was. Davy and the guys get better and give a more polished performance each time I see them.

Duncan has written such a good review of the band's performance at the Glasgow show that I won’t try to match it and instead I’ll just concentrate on the venue and the specifics of the show.

Bush Hall is a beautiful Art Deco building circa 1905 with lots of ornate plasterwork. It holds around 300 with a small stage about 70cm or 2 ½ feet high. Although I was leaning on the stage immediately in front of PK and it was difficult to see exactly how many were there, I’d estimate around 250 across all age groups.

Davy, PK and Steven appeared on stage at 9.25pm and, as at the previous shows on this tour, launched into a blistering Tear Down The Walls followed by Riverbed. The setlist was slightly different to the Glasgow gig with Outside Woman Blues replacing You Don’t Love Me. The full setlist is below:

After Riverbed, Davy and the rest of us were in hysterics when a female member of the audience yelled out “I’m Saving Myself, Davy”. lol Davy said that must be the heckle of the tour.  big_smile

Following Coming Up For Air and a stunning Outside Woman Blues Davy said that after a few months of gigging in the US he started to think he was getting the hang of this guitar playing and was doing ok. Then he came across Warren Haynes and realised there was still a lot to learn. So Davy and I have one thing in common, we’re both in awe of the great man. http://www.flickr.com/photos/wooders_pi … 335187475/

As a very big Mule and ABB fan, it was great to hear Davy’s interpretation of Worried Down and I hope it will remain in the set and develop into a classic.

To be honest I wasn’t too sure what to make of the new song, Catch The Moon on first hearing as it seems very different to Davy’s previous offerings. It’s good that Davy’s got some new material in the pipeline and I’m sure I will think differently if I hear it in another setting as the sound wasn’t the best standing immediately in front of PK – no offence meant. big_smile

All too soon Keep Searchin’ ended and it was into the epic Cut My Hair. This number is really developing a life of its own and is a great way to close the set. Davy’s guitar work is absolutely stunning on it and he really ‘goes for it’.

Disappearing backstage for a few minutes, Davy was back for the encore of Messin’ taken at the usual breakneck pace with some electrifying guitar runs. Looking almost completely knackered, Davy, Steven and PK said goodnight and sought sanctuary backstage for around 5 minutes before reappearing to meet and greet and sign CDs and DVDs. It’s a great PR exercise and long may it continue. wink

I waited until nearly everyone had left before approaching the table and caught Davy’s eye. I’d been fortunate enough to pick up the setlist (I’ve got quite a collection now) and Davy and the guys kindly signed it for me. Evan spotted my BDS t-shirt and said he should take a photo for Davy’s website, so beware if you visit there. yikes

I gave Davy the copies of the forum threads to read on the flight back to the US and he was really appreciative being the humble and lovely guy he is.

Setlist:

Tear Down The Walls
Riverbed
Coming Up For Air
Outside Woman Blues
Worried Down With The Blues
Come Home
Catch The Moon and Run
Keep Searchin'
Almost Cut My Hair
Messin' With The Kid (encore)

I’ll try to get some pics up at the weekend. After two nights of gigs and only 4 hours sleep each night I’m feeling just a little tired.

Re: Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam @ Bush Hall 7 April 2010

Nice review Phil.
Seems like all four gigs were well attended and well received.
The Birmingham audience were in raptures, and it seems we were the only ones to get Outside Woman and You Dont Love Me, the latter after they were persuaded to stay on and play a second encore.
We had our funny moment too, during one of the quieter spots in a Davy solo, when somebody's (very loud) phone rang, prompting laughter in the audience and on stage. At the end of the song Davy remaked that "at least it was in tune".  big_smile

Mrs Icon was a happy bunny as Davy contributed to her growing collection of picks, and all the guys signed a poster I saw her Tear Down (from) the Wall. (sorry  roll )

The response to my "See you again guys - Soon?!" as we left the room came from Evan, who said "yes it should be - if word gets out."
Is there any doubt that word is out? I think not. There was at least one promoter from a club with an established blues rock audience in attendance, and he was telling me that Davy is high up on the list of names he wants to book.

Glad a good time was had by all.  Hopefully will get to hear some of the new material soon in person.  Mr Meerkat needs a show to go to!

I like going to gigs with Wooders 'cos he's usually quick on the draw with the review and I just have to mop up.

Super review Phil, you caught the evening just right.

It's hard to explain how much I rate Davy and his potential to be a big star of the future. I was impressed with the following he's gathered already (and he seemed genuinely surprised too). The audience were very enthusiastic and clearly went to see Davy himself rather than just “oh, let's go and see a band tonight”. The audience make-up reminded me of the Derek Trucks gig I went to – a big spread of ages and a healthy male/female mix.

Davy's cover of Warren Haynes' Worried Down With The Blues was an appreciation of how Warren has inspired Davy (and what a mentor to have) while the jamming on Almost Cut My Hair wouldn't have been out of place at a Gov't Mule gig although it was firmly played in Davy's own unique style. The audience went nuts.

We begged for an encore and got a blistering version of Messin' With The Kid. It was only a few minutes after the show that the band came out to meet the fans and it was plain to see it wasn't just a duty as they looked really happy to meet everyone, chat away and pose for photos. When Davy comes back I'd get your ticket as soon as you can as I reckon he'll be selling out venues. But get in the queue behind me  big_smile

Nice summary, David. I think I should wait for you to post next time as you're a pretty good writer. Apologies for not mentioning you and Rob (Mansfield) in my review.

I've just heard it will be quite a few months before Davy is back in the UK, but I'll be sure to let you know where and when as soon as I know.  wink

Hey Phil,

I'm counting New Years Eve as 2 shows as I was at the noontime live radio broadcast and the night time show as well. So that means, you've only got 7 more to go. wink

And I would agree, that was a nice summary David! I think you hit the nail right on the head when you mentioned the fact that the guys really like to come out and greet the fans. I've thought that many times myself, they really enjoy relaxing and chatting with fans while having something cool to drink. smile

Re: Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam @ Bush Hall 7 April 2010

Nice one, Ian. Trouble is, Roy will be counting that as his twelfth BDS show!  roll

Rusty, Duncan tells me that a lady in Glasgow yelled "I love you, Davy" which made Davy chuckle.  I was hoping the lady heckler in London would say that so I could yell "I'd rather hear You Don't Love Me, Davy".  lol

Sadly he didn't play that song this time. I was checking the setlist for the 100 Club gig in February and there were 14 songs that time against only 10 at Bush Hall.

Roy, could you ask Davy why we were short changed this tour, please?

I've just noticed I did not reply on this page. Great reviews Phil and David, let's hope we get to do it all again soon! smile

Just a word of explanation Phil...............
When we got our photo taken with the band after the show I mentioned to Davy what a rare shot it would be. When he asked why I said well its a photo of you guys and Roy's not in it. That caused more than a chuckle - Davy doubled up!  lol
I'm told he just pops up everywhere. Seems they were right!  lol

As for being short changed Phil, considering the ticket prices I think we got excellent value - although you may be slightly miffed that the Birmingham audience got one song more than the other gigs I suppose. You'll have to cheer louder next time!
That said, I for one wouldn't mind paying double next time for one of the 2 hour plus gigs that Roy keeps telling us about.

Well I agree seeing Davy once is worth several of most other artist’s gigs, but it’s all relative. I guess we were spoilt in February when we had 14 songs.

Scary indeed, Roy. No such ghostly apparitions in my pics which Sandy will be pleased to see I’ve now turned the right way. big_smile

The handsome chaps on the first pic are, of course David (currymandavid) and Rob (Mansfield). You may recognise Rob as being in the front row on the RAH DVD. In fact, I think he was next to Shreddie.  smile

There are also some “interesting” expressions from Davy and the band, some of which I’m not sure they’ll be too keen on. lol
