Topic: Tiger & The Masters

The tournament starts this morning following Augusta National's chairman Billy Payne blasting Tiger Woods both publicly and in a private meeting for the star's recent shortcomings.  This years opening round at Masters is shaping up as maybe the highest rated sports event.

Re: Tiger & The Masters

I knew over four months ago that Tiger would pick this tournament for his return to golf.  The reason is because Augusta National strongly discourages impolite drunken behavior.  You will be escorted out for catcalls, and at over a thousand bucks for a daily ticket, that would be most unwise.

That was pretty predictable in this marketing opera.

Yes, indeed, and perhaps since one can get tossed out of the "prestigious" thing, a small plane skywriting something witty or even better, drop some green "ribbed" condoms (a jacket's a jacket) onto the green of one of Tiger's holes.  Too bad I won't see that even if someone does!

Great post Rocket - I'll have to remember that one!  Did you know that all sandwiches sold on the course come in green wrappers so as not to show up on television?  They also plant hundreds of  blooming azelea bushes if Mother Nature doesn't comply by tournament time.  There's also not one weed on that golf course.  Interesting fact: the cost of a tunafish sandwich, bag of chips and a heinekin was $2.00 the last time I went in '05.  Compared to $6.50 for a Bud Light at a St. Louis Cardinals game I say that's the best bargain in sports.

Re: Tiger & The Masters

All I can say is that The Masters is the one tournament I really enjoy watching in it's entirety on TV. This tournament isn't about one player; it is about tradition, honor and one of the most beautiful golf courses in the world. My golf foursome with our wives would get together every year to watch the third round together. Almost if you will, a signal to the start of our season. Now with my great friend Jeff gone to a better place, it carries even more significance for me. I've got to work this Saturday during the third round, but my thoughts to times past spent with one of the best friends a guy could have will linger for a long, long time.

I'll be sure to watch on Sunday, the final round.....

Re: Tiger & The Masters

I'm always stoked to watch the Masters. And yes, I am stoked to see the world's greatest golfer return. I for one just don't care about Tiger's indiscretions. He simply got caught doing what a ton of other professional athletes, musicians, and politicians do all the time. When it's in the culture, why point out one man? That doesn't mean the rest are going to fall in line. Besides, it's his own life, I could care less. So, yes, I am very excited to see what the world's greatest golfer will do upon his return to the sport.

Re: Tiger & The Masters

All Tiger has to do is shoot say a 68 and nobody will worry much about his indiscretions. Deezer's right, who in his position hasn't stuck their hand in the "cookie jar", some get caught and some don't. He has changed the game and it suffered without him. For those of you who don't want to watch, knock yourselves out, but I wouldn't miss this for the world, especially since we just purchased a 46" Sony LCD and can't wait to see Augusta in all its high def glory. God I hope it doesn't rain.

See that's where I think differently. You say, "One set of rules for "us" and another set for him." I think, "Everybody who is in his position (athletes, famous musicians except Joe, politicians, TV personalities, movie stars) thinks the rules do not apply to them." It's in the culture. So to single him out and say you're wrong, is like putting one brush stroke on the broad side of a barn. It doesn't cover anything. But it does make the people calling out Tiger feel better about themselves, I guess, so it's whatever. I will say, nobody knows how they would react if they were in the situation he was in. Nobody here knows that. Nobody knows how strong their morals and their code really is. I tend to believe the Joker in The Dark Knight, "When the chips are down, these civilized people will eat each other."

I'm in total agreement with what you say because human beings have developed a short attention span.  Especially Americans.  If the guy wasn't married he actually would've increased his endorsement income.

The apple didn't fall too far from the tree because Earl Woods was a bigtime playah back in the day.  Tiger himself has admited to the entitlement of being famous as an excuse and I find that a shallow explanation.  You're right about the winning cancelling most of the fallout, but like Billy Payne said, there 'll forever be an asterik attached to his name that has nothing to do with beating par.

Re: Tiger & The Masters

It's not whether it's a shallow explanation or not. The truth is, no one here knows how they would act if given that much talent, wealth, fame, power, and control. And passing judgment on something in which you have idea how you would act in the same situation is, in my opinion, ludicrous. No offense intended.

That's the last I'll say on the subject, because in the end, people are going to do what they're going to do.

Re: Tiger & The Masters

And this just in from The Masters.....Tiger Woods was not heckled on the course today, but it was reported that an airplance flew overhead waving a sign that read: "Tiger: Did you mean Bootyism?”.

And that as they say, was that in the news today.

I'll tell you how I would act and that would be to honor the vows I made to my wife at our wedding.  Remember I'm speaking for myself and not someone of celebrity.  Should I ignore my reaction to his disgraceful behavior?  If he was like Ben Roethlisberger or Kobe Bryant (two rapists still walking the streets) should I just write it off to boys will be boys?  How do you think his wife, children and mother should react when his selfishness has shattered their lives.  In my opinion it boils down to accountability and to assume anyone who dares to voice an opinion against him is oblivious to the world of the rich and famous is ludicrous assumption.
