Anyone go to this gig ?
Thanks,

Hi Brack
I went to Joe's two sets at Bluesfest after seeing Joe in Sydney. I have just arrived home after flying back from Byron Bay. We camped there for 5 days so am a bit blurred after so so much music. See www.bluesfest.com.au]www.bluesfest.com.au for more info.
Joe played two sets at Bluesfest - 2 April and 3 April.
Friday 2 April - Crossroads "Tent" that holds up to five or so thousand fans I'd guess.
This set was 1 hour fifteen minutes. He followed Dr John and the 911 and was followed by Buddy Guy and then Jeff Beck.
Joe obviously had to trim his set down. He started with TBOJH as per usual and played let me remember Sloe Gin, Blues Deluxe, So Many Roads, Three Times a Fool, Mountain Time Further Up on the Road, acoustic Woke Up Dreaming, finished with Young Man's Blues and Just Got Paid.
Great compact set. I saw many people blown away from what they heard and this should create heaps more word of mouth promotion in Oz on top of the Sydney and Melbourne gigs. Must admit to some of the crusty hardline blues fans there didn't get it most probably because of their traditional views. Hey that's life and I debated the point with them.
For me and my second JG gig I was blown away, not as much as Sydney where I saw the full 130 minute set. I am greedy hey !...
Saturday - 3 January - Crossroads "Tent"
This set was shorter at one hour. He was followed by John Mayall and his band. There were a lot more punters turned up for this set after the previous set.
Joe must have decided to keep this set rocking for the most part - he opened with Young Man's Blues which initially surprised me. Others songs included TBOJH, Further On Up The Road. The set was finished with Woke Up Dreaming and Just Got Paid.
Absolutely fantastic from Joe and the band and the audience gave him a great reception. At the end of the gig, Joe said he was really surprised that anyone knew him in Australia - well Joe I have been waiting since 1996 and it was just so worth it !
I would have loved to have heard "Spanish Boots" from Black Rock. I feel confident he will return within a year.
That may be a bit scrappy, but that's my state of mind after 5 days of music and camping out.
PS - Jeff Beck was awesome, and Buddy Guy delivered like he has a thousand times before.

Thanks Rod. I have been waiting (im)patiently for your report . Well done for making the trek up to Byron Bay. I would have loved to go but the cost and a serious aversion to camping put me off. Opening the set with Young Mans Blues - I might have actually camped out to see that.
I too think we will see Joe back here before too long. The damage to #52 notwithstanding, he did seem genuinely surprised at the support he had here, and he seemed to have a great time.
Funny about the crusty blues guys too. One standing next to me was not happy about the Spanish influence in Woke Up Dreaming, and was most unhappy when Joe started playing a BB King song (didn't really want to argue with him that Blues Deluxe was not a song by the King )
Hi Grey
Thanks - it was worth it for 2 x Joe plus Beck, Guy etc
Re Blues Deluxe. I just checked my old vinyl of Jeff Beck Group's Truth album and the song is listed as Traditional. If you look at Joe's Blues Deluxe CD, the song is a attributed to Rod Stewart who I assume coddled together (some) of the lyrics along with Beck's arrangements. I assume this attribution must have been made on good research and legal advice as they were the lyrics that Joe sang. What blues song is totally the work of one musician ?
He is a big Jeff Beck fan as he also plays Spanish Boots on Black Rock originally from the Beckola album.
Points score to you on that argument !
I reckon we'll see Joe within 12 months. Maybe I'll come down to Melbourne. Joe may play a larger venue this time.

Hey Rod thanks for the post as I was hanging out to hear about Bluesfest. Popular media coverage of that festival as well as Joe's gigs has been non-existent. Guess their too busy covering world moving events like some guy being attacked by a killer wombat (see http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/manma … -rnqk.html )
Confirming that Blues Deluxe is attributed to Rod Stewart which has always bemused me.
I sure hope that JB does come back in a year or so - as for venue though I'd be most happy to see him play multiple nights at The Corner rather than a larger site and lose that intimacy. I'm still getting over that sensational night and finding myself having to get a 'live' JB fix from RAH and Rockpalast DVD's! If he returns to Bluesfest I may have to overcome my similar-to-Grey anti-camping sentiments and bite that bullet to make the trek.
Hi Peter
I'll take a raincheck on the wombat !
There's also the "A New Day Yesterday Live" DVD with Joe as a younger man to pass the time. I don't know if it is available from Joe's site (here !). I got mine when I bought the early release of the "So It's Like That" CD when it was a bonus back in 2002 (?).
I will go camping again at Byron Bay to see Joe again, Portaloos and all. My son and I had a crackin' time.
Meanwhile enjoy life

G'day All,
Pazzazz here, brand new to the Jo Bo Forum.
I too saw the great man at Byron Bay Bluesfest.
Over the last 40 years or so I have heard many of the best guitarists.
What I saw at Byron absolutely BLEW ME AWAY !!!
The best I have ever seen. No doubt.
My festival was graded by my F*kometer.
Acts rated by how many times I dribbled out an the expletive.
Jo Bo had it off the scale.
Wife and I are off to UK in May/June.
Might give Lizzie's Jewell's a miss and catch Jo Bo at London/Bournemouth/Birmingham??
Can't wait to see him again.
If of any info, other acts that rated on the F*kometer were:
The Mojo Webb Band......... Yeaahhhh!!
Cousin Harley ......... brilliant Jazz guitar player and AMAZING slap bass player.
Umphreys Mgee ........ two brilliant guitarists duelling/complimenting ........ t'riffic.

Welcome to the forum. Tried to get my son, who lives in Brisbane, to bring his family along, but they just couldn't make it, kids too young. Glad you enjoyed the show, must have been a blast. Love your F***ometer - people have been discovering theirs over here since Joe has first played here. Get his Albert Hall DVD to get those F's off the scale!

Welcome to Joe's Forum Pazzazz, * Handshake*
Byron was great... you don't have to camp and i wouldn't recommend it either, tents were packed together like sardines. I stayed in a hotel and got a shuttle bus straight from the front to the venue so it was very convenient. Now for the show.. the first night you may have noticed Joe used those two VM marshalls yet the seond night he had a DSL or something (I don't have much knowledge of Marshalls) I thought he sounded better the second night and then i found out he was only running through one 12" the whole night for fridays set!!! The 3 other speakers in his cab blew... He sounded great though and i heard a LOT of good comments from young and old people that had never heard of him really digging the music.
On another note Jeff Beck came out with a Les paul which was cool and played with a young lady who could really sing!! awesome set i personally thought. Chase the Sun were a great band and i liked their stuff... I was a bit down that Al Di Meola was on the list of artists but didn't rock up so i bought his new CD Chaos of Consequence (i think thats what it was called) and really dissapointed it's dinner music that you would turn down really quiet and only subconsciousely hear it, wasn't captivating at all.
I bought Joes new album Black Rock and it took a few goes in the CD player before i got into it... as Joe says in the pamphlet, you really need to turn this album up LOUD to get the full enjoyment. And i think every song is a corker, but to me the album seems to get better and better after song 5 (Spanish Boots). My Favourite tracks are from 10 to 13.
