Wow, I'm suprised not more votes for Black Sabbath...one of the most influential band in rock history....For new bands....WOLFMOTHER is indeed a force to be reckoned with.

It's a very difficult question to answer, because you not only have to define what you mean as 'rock' but also what you mean as 'best'.  Are you talking about best as in best songs, most entertaining, most popular, best individual musicians, best lyrics, most popular, biggest selling or most influential. 

To be honest, under all the above definitions of 'best' (except perhaps biggest selling) I wouldn't have any of those four bands even in my top ten.  I believe there are more talented bands as individual musicians (eg Rush), more entertaining bands (eg Queen), more influential bands in rock music (eg Free, Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix), better lyricists (eg Rush again).  Maybe The Beatles would sneak into the most influential category, even though I don't particularly care for their music personally.

The four bands you originally mentioned were all good bands, but their success owes as much to timing and cultural environmental factors as it does to talent.

Zeppelin, Cream, The Beatles, Aerosmith... guess,,, if we're talking EVER,, anything after 1990's cant count. So Those bands would be my regular choices....

I've been ODed on Freebird myself by "Classic Rock" radio and have even dashed for the parking lot about halfway through it at venues where leaving can take an eternity. One of my all time faves is Am I Losin', but there are sooooooo many faves.

Oh that is too funny Guenter, should have read this before I posted previously but missed it. That is a real 3 chord wonder, even I can play some or most of it in my sleep. Now you've got me and my son trying to imitate what we think it sounded like with an extremely pronounced accent. Some of the lines are just hysterical when sung in this way. Thanks for sharing that.

This is my vote too and totally agree Mike

AC/DC All day long and Still Kicking Up Dust Now, 37 years of churning top quality powerful Rock albums and some of Rocks classic anthems, too many too mention, Back in Black being the 2nd Biggest selling album of all time, selling more than any other album ever and only trailing Michael Jackson's Thriller, not bad for a Rock Band

Although Led Zeppelin we're just so brilliant and too, had many of rocks legendary songs their lifespan was very short at 13 years, Love Zep's sound

I Guess a top 10 would look something like this
