Topic: Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam in Munich, 30th of March

Hi everybody,

I just wanted to give a short report on the Back Door Slam concert in Munich, Germany this week.

Me and Mrs. Fingers were there to see one of our 2 favorite blues guitarists and singers (guess who the other guy is wink). The gig came on very short notice, only 2 1/2 weeks in advance of the show, and it was the evening of the Champions League football (soccer) match Bavaria Munich vs. Manchester United. So it was no big surprise that there was only an audience of maybe 30 to 40 to see Davy and his guys. But we were a loud and enthusiastic crowd. smile

We were always hoping that Davy Knowles would come to Germany some day, and this was our chance. I later learned that some fans came from as far as Poland and Italy to see the band!

The gig took place in a rather small club (maximum 100 persons, I guess) and we were standing in the front row, so I could take some (not very high quality) pictures that I will upload later. The band played in power-trio formation (keyboarder Ty was not with them) and I must say that there probably wouldn't have been enough room on the stage for a fourth musician. lol

Davy (nice down-to-earth guy that he is) apologized for his poor German and he thanked us for missing the football match. He said that he had seen more English guys in his hotel in Munich than in any other hotel in the world. lol
The show was over after only 10 - 12 songs (I would have liked them to play all night smile) but it was a great show. Davy had brought 2 PRS guitars with him (one of his "old" ones with 2 humbuckers and his new 305) and a Marshall JCM 900 halfstack. He kept drinking from a cup for the whole show. Someone brought him a new cup (of warm tea?) several times. Did he have problems with his throat? He wrote something about "throat coat" tea on his twitter page... I can only say that his voice was as good as ever.

After the show, I "found" the setlist and got it signed by the band. This was the good thing about this beeing such a small gig: Everybody who felt like it was able to "meet&greet" the band after the show. And we definitively felt like it! smile We got the setlist signed, we got our BDS-DVD signed (they sold copies of their 2 CDs and their DVD but we already had all of them), we took pictures and we talked to Davy. smile smile
Unfortunatelly they had no t-shirts on sale...

Yesterday (after our return from Munich) we checked Davy's twitter page. He wrote that he enjoyed the show, and what was best: He posted a funny picture of his hotel. And it was the same hotel as ours!!! lol

Did anybody attend the BDS gig in Berlin?

Nice write up, Rusty. Thanks.  wink  Shame that there were so few there, but hopefuly they'll spread the word and next time Davy will fill the hall. Shame also that Ty wasn't there. We'll know not to expect him in the UK next week.  sad

Well done for nabbing the setlist and getting it signed.  smile Could you post it, please? Did you get an encore?

Davy is certainly a lovely guy and PK and Steven are good fun too and I'm looking forward to my fourth Davy gig in London on Wednesday.  big_smile

Thanks again, Rusty. Nice pics.

The setlist looks like:

1.    Riverbed
2.    Coming Up For Air
3.    Worried Down (is this the the Allmans/Gov’t Mule ‘Worried Down With the Blues’? If so, big_smile )
4.    Come Home
5.    Tear Down The Walls
6.    You Don’t Love Me (this is becoming a regular feature – nice)
7.    Outta My Mind (not sure what this is. Think it’s in a song but which one? Roy?)
8.    Messin’ With The Kid
9.    Keep On Searchin’
10.    Almost Cut My Hair
11.    Walk On Hot Coals (cool)

I hope the setlist is a little longer next week. wink

Re: Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam in Munich, 30th of March

Very nice write up Rusty and glad for you that you and Mrs. Fingers attended the show. smile  In answer to your wondering about the cup and if it was warm tea, I'm sure it was. In the 11 performances that I've seen Davy play, I don't remember even one time that he didn't have a cup of tea on stage with him. Once in a while he might have another beverage like water or even a little wine/beer, but it's usually tea that he really likes to drink. He really does put a lot into his singing as his guitar playing, so I'm sure that helps him maintain his voice through the show. Also, really enjoyed looking through the pictures you took.

I know Davy just recently picked up the PRS 305 which is either his sixth or seventh PRS depending upon when he received it. I can foresee in the future a "Davy Knowles influenced" PRS guitar. I know he has a lot of respect for their company and they appear to really like Davy as an artist as he frequently appears in their monthly newsletter.

The "older" guitar that you referenced which is shown in this picture: http://s184.photobucket.com/albums/x61/ … roshot.jpg , if I'm not mistaken is the one that Davy mostly plays now. It's not his original Smokeburst McCarty PRS, but a very special one that was given to him by Mr. Paul Reed Smith. I believe they call it their "Violin" and depending how it's custom made the cost is unbelievable. That particular one roars just like the Tiger stripes that are on it. wink

And Phil, that song could be a new one that Davy wrote. I know during his time off he spent a lot of time writing so maybe we'll all be seeing some new songs tried out before too long. I guess shortly it will be on to the UK for the boys. Have a great time Phil! smile

Re: Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam in Munich, 30th of March

Phil, I forgot to say that we got one encore - "Walk On Hot Coals". I think they played all the songs from the setlist, but not in the order that is stated on the list.  "Almost Cut My Hair" for example came right in the middle of the show. As for the 2 "unknown" songs ("You Don’t Love Me" and "Outta My Mind"): They played one or two new songs (I think it was 2). So at least one of those 2 songs is a new DK&BDS song.

Greyhound-Roy, thanks for clearing up the thing about Davy's cup. 11 performances?! I envy you! There are guys who say that Joe B. spends too much time in Europe. But what about Davy Knowles? He is spending way too much time in the States...  wink
