Topic: Official Mixed Martial Arts discussion thread

Ok i see there are at least a few mma fans on here, so thought Id start a thread....

UFC 111 coming up Saturday..........Who ya got?  GSP or Dan Hardy   OR  Frank Mir or Shane Carwin?

Re: Official Mixed Martial Arts discussion thread

I think both Hardy and Carwin have a "punchers" chance in the fights on Saturday night.

If things go by skill and experience both GSP and Mir will win handily -- the surprises make the sport fun though; I'm expecting an exciting fight card this weekend.

Late breaking news - Thiago Alves has been scratched from the fight card. He will not be able to fight Jon Fitch due to an irregularity found in the pre-fight cat scan. Career of the 26 y/o fighter now seems in jeopardy. Glad they caught it pre-fight.

Should be a great weekend for MMA in New Jersey......

Yeah, with the sport there is always a chance........part of what makes it so exciting...........however that being said...i really dont think Hardy has anything to offer GSP.....Should look alot like GSP vs Alves........With Carwin, he hasnt really been in there that much to know a lot about him as a fighter.......learned alot from his fight with Gonzaga(was there live!)  but he hasnt been in the cage for longer than a couple minutes in any fight.........should be interesting

also since Alves is out.......Fitch is fighting Ben Saunders now.

Re: Official Mixed Martial Arts discussion thread

lol @ Brack. Maybe you should mudwrestle with Guna Carano or Mrs. Cyborg I bet you wouldn't be in favour afterwards haha

As for MMA finally found this thread. Yes huge fan here. Haven't trained for ages sadly due to personal problems but have remained a fan. Was actually there from the start (well 3 or 4 events in actually but I did start with UFC 1 on VHS when it came out when I was like 10 or 11).

Can't wait for 111, gotta go with Mir and GSP but will be rooting for Carwin and Hardy. Both closer fights than people are giving them credit for though imo, I haven't made any bets yet thats for sure. Mir/Carwin is very interesting because it depends on gameplans and wether Carwin can implement his. Mir has been getting better and better aside from running into Brock even if he is an arrogant prat. Carwin on the otherhand has looked superb but its relatively untested both in terms of overcoming adversity and in the competetion he has fought (with only Gonzaga standing out in both categories). Will be really interesting to see what gameplans both come out with. Will Carwin come out swinging and open himself up to being dropped like Mir did to Kongo (was that just a lucky one off?) or will he try to copy Brocks gameplan of takedown and smother and then HULK like GnP? If he does has Mir progressed enough to counter this attack? Is Carwin good enough to emulate Brock Lesnar??? Lots of unawsnered questions very good fight.

Sad about Alves/Fitch but you can't take chances with brain scares. By the sounds of things its a technicality though and Alves will be cleared after seeing a specialist. Fitch will now fight Saunders by the way. Interesting matchup again. I might even lay some money on Saunders here. Fitch doesn't often have to fight someone his own size and has looked poor recently imo. Then again Saunders best weapons are taken away when he fights someone his own size as well so its a toss up but worthy of a small bet me thinks as he has the most value as an underdog imo.

Re: Official Mixed Martial Arts discussion thread

Well I wouldnt mind "wrestling" with Gina,,,,,,,,,,,,,but Cyborg....NO WAY!

anyway GSP is -800  cant imagine putting any money down there.........last time i checked Hardy was +550 or something like that...........may be worth a play there..........i dont really bet much but just remembered seeing those lines.....

Re: Official Mixed Martial Arts discussion thread

yeah thats good value he certainly isn't that big a dog. It doesn't matter if he was +1000 (100/1) I still can't see him winning.

If you can afford to lose money though those are good odds, on the odd chance he lands a clean shot, he has a punchers chance thats for sure. Much bigger upsets have happened before imo.

Re: Official Mixed Martial Arts discussion thread

Well the GSP v Hardy fight went about how i thought it would.........Hardy had nothing for him....props to Hardy for surviving some bad spots but he didnt do ANYTHING offensively.

Carwin packs some power!  Looking forward to Carwin v Lesnar....not sure where Frank goes from here...all that size he put on didnt mean anything as he still got pushed up against the cage.

Fitch really needs to start making some type of effort to finish a fight....he doesnt even try to advance his position.

Looking forward to April 10th to see Silva defend and also BJ defend their belts.

Re: Official Mixed Martial Arts discussion thread

....we have fight night wednesday night as well. Gomi is going to get wrecked by KenFlo

Anyway, props to GSP he is just on a nother level. I knew Hardy would make him work but yeah he just couldn't mount any offense. Who can defend against GSPs takedowns though? He is sooooo good.

I agree about fitch he has looked lacklustre since as far back as the GSP fight imo, I knew he would make a meal of it but much like Hardy, Saunders was just overmatched. I think GSP needs smilar critiscm however. I know he cam close with those 2 subs but did he really make a concerted effort to finish the fight? His wrestling is so good he knows he can win almost every fight with just that. I mean Greg Jackson was telling him to coast until the last 30 seconds of a round - that bs imo. Both guys have looked less than great recently but then again GSP could be due to a lack of challenges. He is just soo much better than everyone else at 170. He has to challenge himself and move up now I feel.

Carwin looked great in taking advantage of Lesnars exact strategy against Mir very smart and just shows Mir has not evolved enough. He is now a way down the pecking order again, I guess a rematch with Nog may be in order.

Re: Official Mixed Martial Arts discussion thread

I agree with most of what you said............for me the difference between GSP and Fitch fights is that Fitch does NOT try and improve his positon...he is content to sit in someones guard and pot shot them and control them..no effort to finish....with GSP he is CONSTANTLY improving his position (dispite Greg Jackson telling him not to)  he is going from hafl guard to side mount to mount to back and he does make an effort to finish.

thats the difference to me....

Yes i also think Florian beats Gomi........

Re: Official Mixed Martial Arts discussion thread

yeah can't argue with that, GSP always trys to dominate whereas Fitch clearly just wants to grind out a win by whatever means. I still think GSP has become to 'saftey first' but then everyone has off times

Exactly my opinion of the fights and aftermath.

Dan Miller surviving over a minute and half body triangle and fighting off the choke to come back and win was pretty good stuff too.....as was Pelligrino's win over (??) the Brazilian....

Big win for Florian...the guy is good...better at 155 than anyone not named BJ Penn i think....  looks like Kenny will get Gray Maynard next.

Looking forward to April   UFC 112 saturday   Great Strikeforce show on CBS the 17th and WEC on 24  FABER VS ALDO will be sick!!!!
